Got mine a couple of years ago.
    No problems.

Hubs forgot to renew before his DL expired.

For REALid you need a Certified Copy of your Birth Certificate along with some other documentation.

Well.... HUBS couldn't find his Birth Certificate.

    ***NOTE***
IF you don’t have a valid/current/non-expired drivers license you can’t get a copy of your birth certificate in PERSON. (It would be mailed - SNAIL MAIL)

So the only workaround was for me request a copy of my spouse's Birth Certificate.
(You can get a copy of your spouse's Birth Certificate in person at a Clerk of Courts Office in your State by showing your current Driver's License and Marriage Certificate - then filling out the proper form and paying a fee.)

Thennnnn we could go to the DMV and get him renewed with REALID.

    Life lesson learned?
Renew your drivers license before it expires.
Know where your social security card and birth certificates are.
    Or it’s a royal PITA.

Before I retired at the end of 2017 I worked on the Hawaii real ID program changes (we made the changes in 2013 I think). I renewed my license at the end of 2017 and took all my paperwork so I am "technically" real ID compliant. Unfortunately they didn't put on the Star on the licenses until 2018 so my license isn't really Real ID compliant. I now have to go back to get a new license with the star on it. Not an easy task since the lines at the DMV are very long. I do have my passport but since I have an 8 year license I will probably have to get the new license so I don't need a passport for all travel.

It seems that Homeland is very serious with this Real ID thing so not sure about states who won't be Real ID compliant next October.

After my birthday this year I received a letter indicating I can renew it at anytime to get the real ID because I'm now within two years of the expiration date. Unfortunately, I have to go into the office to do this, and that is just a bad experience in Dallas area. I'll be waiting till after my next trip though.

My husband and I got ours last October when our DMV started issuing them. The only "issue" I experienced was that I needed to have my marriage license, along with the other documents already mentioned, because the name listed on my birth certificate is different from my current drivers license, SS card, etc. So, for married women who took their husband's last name, make sure you include your marriage license to explain the name change. Otherwise, the process was very smooth and painless.

Wisconsin is even worse. If you are divorced at any point & remarried you need copies of divorce decree & both marriage certs etc. I have a passport card so I waited until mine expired last month. Didn’t know where my SS card was so took my tax form. Nope. Back the next week with a W2 which was fine.

I got a passport book, passport card, NY State DL, and yes, will switch to REAL ID soon.
Why do I need a passport card? No reason, just 1 more national ID that I could use to board a plane in case I lose my ID.

Indiana has had it for a few years. I got mine a while ago. However, I always keep my passport up to date because I have a German birth certificate and am a, naturalized citizen. It's always a Pita doing anything and the passport helps.

Kinda how I felt when I renewed my passport a few years back; it's only a few bucks more, just get the card, too. I go to Canada more than any other country, and I often drive, so it's a handy tool. Regardless, redundancy is not a bad thing and they aren't expensive.

I renewed my DL like a good little boy juuuust before they started implementing the gold star real ID thing. I heard horror stories of waiting in line for hours and hours at the DMV but it took me a little under 2 hours to do it. While there I felt sorry for those who didn't have all the required paperwork. They stood in line for nothing.

Our DMV prohibits renewing licenses online EXCEPT those that renewed recently. All these people (including me) have to do is do the paperwork online then pay a nominal fee and the new DL with the gold star will get mailed to you within 4 to 6 weeks.

We got ours at the downtown satellite city hall in Honolulu in 2018. Made an appointment online about 5 weeks in advance. Walked in, they called our name, walked out 5 minutes later. Easy-peasy!

Hawaii was late and there were local issues....it's Hawaii....notorious for stupid state government workers at the DMV. Because of this, I don't have a gold star, but I do have a passport.

NC started sending licenses by mail years ago as a security issue (didn't want license materials in remote counties - theft risk) so mailing the new REAL ID licenses follows the same protocol. I got mine last year. NC has a list of what documentation fulfills each category - it was easy for me to choose (I even had more available options than necessary ;-) Having a passport made it pretty easy. I was worried about address as no utilities are in my name, but car insurance and registration worked as well to prove current address.....

Sadly, I hate my new photo. So I'm still using my old DL because I prefer the pic ;-)

@VegasGroove my wife got hers in December and my old one doesn't expire for another year but we have traveled together CMI to ORD to LAS a couple times this year and no difference. We are both TSA Pre-Check which may or may not matter here. We did see one agent holding up my wife's id to show the gold star to another traveller who had inquired about it. He was careful to cover up her info but it showed me they are aware of it, at least. I'm sure you'll be fine.

We got a letter around the first of the year (in Texas) about real ID and said we could renew even though we had 2 years left.
Went online, answered a few questions sent them $28 (I think this is the correct amount. Got the new DL in about 2 weeks. Now good until 2026.

Everyone else says they have to show various identification documents before getting REAL ID (with the star on it). You were able to get it online?

On the national news last night they were saying that FOUR forms of ID were required!

I know that I NEVER had to give four forms of ID for anything DMV related.

I think that there may be some exaggeration or misinformation going around. My guess is that maybe up to four supporting documents are needed in cases where the person can't show something more authoritative like a passport or birth certificate.

Just got mine last week. My state has an exemption til Oct. 2020, but I'm going in Sept. to Pensacola to watch the Blue Angels practice, and one is required to get on the air base.

Yeah, if you're going, take four things: Birth certificate, Social Security Card, and two things that show your address--bank statements, utility bills. Ladies take a state issued copy of your marriage license.

Maryland REAL ID information here. Guessing it will be a bit more factual than what might be found here. LOL!

    http://www.mva.maryland.gov/realid/real-id-faqs.htm

Lots of information, but here is one that might apply.

My Maryland issued driver’s license already has a star in the upper-right hand corner – Am I REAL ID compliant?
It depends. Marylanders who received a new license or ID card with the “star” symbol – but did not file required documents – need to bring those documents to the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) to complete the process. To check your status visit: www.mva.maryland.gov/realidlookup

Just FYI, like bull said, you need to show your birth certificate and SSN card. But to qualify for the real ID you also have to show legal presence. That is why you need to show bank statements and utility bills with addresses on them. They need to make sure that you actually live where you say you live. Previously there was no check so people (terrorists too) could just get an ID even though they never lived at a particular address. In Hawaii the Driver license office will only send your license to a real address, no PO boxes or company addresses. It has to go to the address listed on your license. Again this is to ensure that you live where your license says you live. The DL office (at least in Hawaii) scans all your documentation so it is available online in case Homeland or some other agency needs to get your info.

There have been many people who didn't get their license because they didn't live at the address listed on their license. When they go in to get their license the DL people won't give it to them, they need to get their license in the mail at their address.

One other thing, if you ever changed your name for any reason, you need to show documentation (marriage license, divorce decrees, legal name changes, etc.) of all your name changes starting with the name on your birth certificate to your current name. So if you got married and divorced multiple times you need to show "official" documentation for all name changes. This was a big problem for some elderly women since they had to go back to the state office to get a letter showing their name change.

The above information is for Hawaii drivers. Each state has their own requirements to qualify for the Real ID card so check with your state's DL. But remember, you need to have the gold star on your ID for it to be a valid Real ID card. No star, not a valid Real ID.
