Richard Ravenscroft’s small store in Maryland’s Allegany County sold a winning $731.1 million Powerball jackpot ticket this week — the fourth-largest jackpot in Powerball game history and the sixth-largest U.S. lottery jackpot in history.

Ravenscroft, 77, said Thursday the phone at his store, Coney Market, has been “ringing off the hook” with calls from news media and local residents.

“I didn’t win, and I don’t know who did,” he said, adding: “It’s quite a large amount, and it sort of boggles your mind. We hope it’s somebody who deserves it.”

The winner might never be publicly known. Maryland is one of a handful of states where winners can remain anonymous, along with Delaware, Kansas, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina and Wyoming.

Powerball tracks every ticket issued and already announced that the winning ticket was sold. I believe the winner has a year to produce the ticket and collect

Yeah, I get that. But how do we know that the Powerball people didn't pocket the cash, and just tell us that someone won and can remain anonymous?

Yeah, I know....I have a suspicious mind. :kill:

That is why MOST states have the law that you cannot remain anonymous after you win a jackpot so the public can see who won and can see it is not rigged (anyone remember the McDonalds monopoly sandal?)

Yeah, but the store owners are "anybody". They are also allowed to play. You should have asked whether the store owners coule have won and remained anonymous and lied about winning The answer to that question depends on the state

So you give the store owner $100K for "selling" the ticket, and pocket $730 million. If the store owner played and lost, what difference would it make to my original question?

For the record, I'm just playing the "what if" game.

In the state of MD you have 182 days to claim your prize.
The population of the town is only 1,200.
It will be a challenge to keep the winner from not being known with the size of the town.

None. Everything you are describing is allowed. When TN first joined the powerball game, the first ever winner from the state was a store owner that bought a ticket at his own store (and received the $100k bonus for selling the winning ticket). Its not a what if. It has happened in the past

Possible that somebody at the lottery headquarters is making it up and taking the cash.

I feel that is so far fetched, it might wall into... well... not gonna go there. Way too many people would have to be bought off that process the claim, verify it, set up payments, notify IRS, etc. And then of course, paying off the store owner.

All those people keeing quiet? Very slim. As they always say, the only way to keep a secret between TWO people is for one of them to be dead.

    And New Jersey too.
Now in NJ you can claim lottery winning and be anonymous.

It was on HBO. And yeah, it was interesting. It all really boiled down to one corrupt security guy that was responsible for the valuable game pieces. But that lead to interactions with an odd cast of characters

I think a winner should be able to be anonymous. I get it, everyone wants to know who won, I do too. There are so many crooks out there ready to defraud the winner. While the persons capability of changing their lives is a great thing, but the big down side is for a long time that person life will be constantly disrupted. I hope it's me.

:nono: Also known as being prone to conspiracy theories. Let's not propagate any nonsense here, no matter how fun you think it is. That kind of BS resulted in a handful of deaths and a lot of arrests in the last couple weeks.

Please remember that facts and truth are still pretty important on VMB.
