Its not so much that I like or dislike the Plaza, but I get free rooms there for just asking everytime, and everytime I have been treated well. We dont gamble alot of money by an stretch, but each and everytime I need something from them, they come through! Maybe something has changed in 8 months since I was there, who knows. Ive read about the bar closing and the resort fees, both of which are really sad to hear. But going to vegas and staying at the spike to me is not like being in Vegas. Its just not the same being away from the other casinos. The Elco is alright, but the place casino needs a serious renovation, its like walking into my grandmas living room if she were to have 2000 slot machines and tables. The place smells of old musty cigs, and I am a smoker, but it just isnt a place I love to play at. Ill sit in the Plaza all day before playing in either of those, to each their own I guess!

The Plaza has tanked quite a bit in the last 8 months. Trust me. 8 months ago it was still kind of riding high from the remodel.

I guess I will get to see it first hand at the end of March! My wifes mother was with us in April and went back in Oct. She had nothing bad to say about the place. Maybe people expect more from places downtown than we do. Give me a decent bed to sleep in for about 4 hours a night, plenty of slots to choose from and decent drink service on the slots and I am happy! The one reason I dont stay on the strip much anymore is because it is like pulling teeth to get a drink on a slot, not to mention if I decide to buy a beer downtown its like $2 for a decent beer! Im not looking for royalty. I havent posted on here in a while but it just seems like a lot of bitching on here more than anything about downtown. Kinda strange.

Totally with you on what makes me happy and why I only stay downtown.

Downtown won't be like downtown too much longer. Everything is going the "upscale, exclusive, youth-oriented" path. To me, that was confirmed when The D pulled down all their gorgeous neon and replaced it with LED screens. That screams "STRIP" to me, and the resort fees are also taking hold. Combine that with the less-favorable gambling, increased homeless beggars, and influx of bars and patios out onto the walkways, and downtown doesn't even resemble what it was just two years ago. I've returned to the strip.

we go through our fazes as well, we stayed downtown for a few years, then back to the Flaming/Harrahs for awhile. Mainly because we have a harrahs property close to home and we gain points. Lately we have been going back DT again. The last few times DT I have went out to the strip for a day and wished I wouldnt have, so until I get that out of my system, we will be staying DT for the foreseeable future.

IU, what kind of play do you give the plaza to get free rooms? How long do you play and the denomination, machines or tables, do you bet $25 minimum on the tables? I never get any free offers from the plaza although I put in some play there, either that or your "don't gamble a lot of money by a stretch" must be a lot more than I gamble.

I would also stay at the plaza if the rates were comparable or lower to other hotels. Lately their rates haven't been very low (especially with the resort fees), easier to stay at the EC, spike and 4queens.

That they are closing the bar and redoing it (didn't they just do it not long ago?) indicates that they aren't doing that well, while you may love the place a majority of the others don't, so much that the casino is pretty empty much of the time. A number of people are commenting (and complaining) because they are disappointed in the plaza, hoping that management might hear the complaints and try to do something to bring the customers back into the casino. Many people say they will stay at the Plaza but then gamble elsewhere, that doesn't help the plaza stay afloat, they need to do something so people will gamble there so they can stay in business.

I'm more of a downtown person and am afraid that all this "upscaling" will start raising the hotel rates at all the downtown hotels. If this happens I'm not sure where else to go, boulder highway hotels maybe? I just hope that downtown will still have hotels with decent rates like the El Cortez, Spike and 4Q and when that disappers I may take my play elsewhere.

I stayed at The Plaza on 12/6 through 12/9. The mini-suite room was VERY nice and clean. None of the bad things Ive heard on this board were true. My host comped it all. I ate at Pop Up Pizza and it was great! I also ate at the Sushi/Hawaiin place it was fantastic. The drink service at the tables was excellent. The drink service at the slots/video poker out on the floor ran the gamet from non existant to pretty good. The dealers and pit bosses for the most part were fun and friendly. I have no complaints.

Huddler, that sounds about exactly how my trip went last Apri, I was confused as to what happened there, other than the bar closing and the resort fees. If I have half as much fun there as last time, I will be very happy! Good to hear you had a good time!

This sounds EXACTLY like what the El Co casino was like about 2-3 years back. Washrooms were salvaged from a Greyhound bus station. There was a blue haze hovering over the last 3 feet below the faded yellow rec-room ceiling tiles.

But its not like that now. Pretty much the whole casino has been renovated including the washrooms. You should take a walk down to the coconut-scented paradise that is now the El Cortez!

It was great actually! The blackjack rules were excellent too. DD game with DAS, 3:2 BJ, double any 2 cards. I have no complaints at all. DDB vp was 9/6 if you looked for it. The drinks were strong and the the casino seemed fun and festive. A couple of the coctail waitressed recognized me and called me by name as soon as I got downstairs. I like it there. If I can just stay off that stupid craps table I would do alot better! Just my 2 cents.

Some times you get offers that make no sense. My wife and I were in Vegas mid October. We went into the Plaza each put 20 dollars in a video poker machine and then left. Last week the Plaza sent us an offer for 4 free nights and 50 free slot play. Good until Feb 15. Also no resort fee.

Very nice offer but makes no sense.

What were you betting? From what I saw there were no DD games at all, I saw continuous shufflers and empty tables.

No, I played at a DD game the entire time I was there. They had the CSM at some tables, but I just didnt sit down at those tables.

Damn. I need to learn not to play the strip crap bj rules. The gogo girls aren't worth the $500 beat down I took on 6/5 crappy Dealer H17 at the Pho. The sh@tkickers from NFR were doubling on hard 13's.

"Some times you get offers that make no sense."
My wife got the same offer. We went in October, stayed 3 nights, paid $0 at check-out and had a great time.
Nice room, fast elevators with no wait and no crowd.

She received another offer last month for four nights free and $70 slot play.
She booked 4 free nights and 2 nights at casino rate ($25) for 2 nights for early December.

Had an enjoyable stay, cleared $72 on free slot play and she got the last 2 nights comped of my play (about 2000 points) at primarily Goldfish slots.

We like downtown, the Plaza, no crowds, free rooms with free Wifi and water.

Suggest you consider the offer even if it doesn't make sense.

I'm at the plaza now having a great stay the new rooms are much nicer than what I remember them being a few years ago when I last stayed. Hotel doesn't seem that busy but were having a great time gambling. I also spoke to some nice staff on the floor who said the new lounge would open before New Year's Eve and all they would say is its going to be a classic vegas casino lounge with live entertainment mostly throwback impersonators they're getting away from the loud dance and hip hop music that's on Fremont street they said.

That's really ironic, since their Facebook page is proudly featuring two new music videos of that very kind of music, both recently filmed at the Plaza:

Personally not my type of music but the videos are ok and show a lot of different downtown landmarks especially the one of the neon museum is cool... I don't see how that is the plaza going in that direction just because a 3 minute music video was there. I guess time will tell if the new lounge opens before New Years what direction they're going in. I'm coming back in end of January so look forward to seeing it.

I've been staying there nearly monthly since they reopened, and this is the primary crowd that I've seen in the rooms, far before these videos were released. Very very ghetto, loudmouthed and rowdy. I've had to call security twice due to the nonsense going on in adjacent rooms - cursing, screaming and fighting, etc. It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that the furniture, walls and fixtures are being torn up. Since dropping the room prices so low, it has only gotten worse.
