Trips to Las Vegas

Hey team,

I'll be heading out to Vegas with two Vegas virgins in April. It'll be two couples sharing a room for the first two nights and then final night in different hotel rooms.

We can get 3 nights comped at either spot and then I plan to book a room at Mandalay Bay for the final night (a Sunday). I'll be at MB with the gf. I love that pool.

I've stayed at both hotels and they're fine, nothing amazing. My resort credit is the same at either property.

Other than the pool, what else will not be available at that time? Anyone know? The definitely want to try buffets, so it is easy to have one in house but then again, the MGM buffet really isn't a long walk from NYNY.

Speaking of the walk, the walk isn't much different between MB and those two, but a little longer to Monte Carlo obviously.

Will any of the rooms already be renovated by April? If so, I think I'd do Monte Carlo as long as there isn't much else missing beyond the pool.

Anything I might not be considering?

NYNY is my vegas home. My wife and I love it. The rooms are always clean and in great condition. I enjoy the restaurants and the casino is just the right size, not to big or small.

Monte Carlo's casino I am not a fan of. It is in the shape of an hourglass. I feel funneled and squeezed. NYNY is very open and the high ceilings are a plus.

We really enjoy the dueling pianos at NYNY because it is not required to go into the bar area to enjoy. You can play video poker at the bar or play a machine and still be right next to the music.

I have stayed at the Monte Carlo in April every year for 20 years! It's not the nicest casino on the strip. However, it's one of the most convenient, and it's linked to the Aria and beyond. So, you can get to great restaurants very quickly, and be on the main strip very quickly as well. I like this place because the lifts to the room are so convenient. You are not walking for 5 minutes to get to the elevator. So when you arrive at the hotel entrance by car, you can be assured of reaching your room pretty quickly. The casino is a more traditional layout and it's not themed at all. It does desperately need a makeover, and it's getting one. I've been told by my host that the Pool is out of action, but you have access to the MGM pool across the road. The fast food/drink places are also easy in the Monte Carlo, with Sambalatte at the front entrance and Starbucks towards the rear. There are fast food joints spitting out food at the rear as well, no matter the time, so it's easy.

The important thing for me is the gambling. I've lost a fortune in Monte Carlo for sure, but I've lost much more per hour in the New York NY. I've never ever won in that place. Not for 20 years. However, it is airy and it's got it's quirks that people like.

I think the buffets in all three casinos are average. The Mandalay Bay buffet gets so so ratings as well. Mirage, Aria and then Bellagio seem to be the ones to go for.

What I do love about these venues however is that they are all interlinked (Monte Carlo to the Aria, then Vdara, Cosmopolitan, and Bellagio by tram if you want, and then cross the walkway to Planet Hollywood and the other side of the street, and beyond). New York NY has the walkway to Excalibur, to Luxor and MB, and of course MGM across the walkway.

I think it's a dead heat between NY NY and Monte Carlo this year. Next year the "Park MGM" should win.

I'd go NYNY in a heartbeat.

I don't think anyone knows where they will be with construction in a few months, but I think it's safe to say it will be in full swing and I don't think I'd want to risk being awakened at 8a by the sound of drilling two floors up. I would also say with almost certainty none of the rooms will be reno'd by then, at least not in a bookable form.

Obviously no buffet at NY but MGM is right across the street. I hear not so good things about MC's.

I just love the vibe and character of NYNY, it's so much more fun to me, especially with The Pub at MC gone there's just not much that's worth doing in there until they complete the reno.

I think I read somewhere where the construction at MC is going to be going on for most of 2017. I walked through there in late November and there was a lot of it going on. I've only stayed at NYNY twice but I liked it. I always visit there though when I'm in LV and I really like the place. Great food options and one of my favorite places in LV to have a drink is Nine Fine Irishmen. Have a great trip!!!

:peace:

As a Vegas veteran, you have a responsibility to make it enjoyable for the first timers coming with you. :)

Don't risk a miserable experience at Monte Carlo with potential construction annoyances/noise/etc.

Plus the first timers will probably be more impressed by NYNY than MC anyway.

Book NYNY.

I have stayed at NYNY multiple times and really enjoyed it. Never stayed at Monte Carlo. I think the eateries are better at NYNY. The different places feel more original/genuine and not like "fast food". Love the 48th & Crepe place

So far as the buffets are concerned....not really much difference on far South Strip. Mandalay is probably the best. All the others, including MGM and Monte Carlo, average at best

I like Monte Carlo's gaming floor more than NYNY. More open, more tables, easier to navigate, less of a party atmosphere. NYNY definitely has more charm, most of the rooms are nicer, more to see other than the floor. The food options would not influence me, since they are next door to each other. The location of the tram at Monte Carlo is very convenient, but again, next door. Without the construction, MC would be my choice if the pool was in service and you wanted to use it. With the construction unknown, NYNY is a fine choice.

Stayed at all those hotels. Would stay at NYNY for the sheer Vegas experience. There are more people and things to do inside NYNY than Monte Carlo. MC is really small and someone also mentioned you feel boxed inside. There is more "Vegas" in NYNY while the only thing going for MC is that strong fragrance in the hotel lobby.

Since you are taking them and they need to be indoctrinated, take them on the Vegas Crawl! They would love it (I think, depends on their age though). You can get a good deal for 3-5 clubs/bars with drinks for around $40 with Groupon.

With the construction going on at Monte Carlo, completely re branding the place - I would personally stay clear of it until it is all done and go with NY NY

I've been told by my host that I won't be interrupted with the noise of renovation, as they are focused on the low floor rooms currently, and most are being situated in higher floors. However, we all know that sound travels within building structures. I would suggest that the noise will usually take place during the day, and if you are in your hotel room during the day in Vegas, I would ask what on earth you are doing in there !! If you've pulled an all night session on the tables, I doubt many things would keep you from a deep slumber!

However, if you have alternatives, and you can book NYNY for the same price, then stay there as it's comparable. It's only another 2 minutes apart anyway, and so you are effectively connected to the other casino properties. It's the strip. It's not difficult !!

The only issue I have this year is that I am bringing my family out for the first 10 days of the 25 night trip. There is no swimming pool - which is a drag. It means going over to the MGM pool, which is superior anyway to MC and NYNY easily, but it's not the hotel where your room is located and so its far more inconvenient.

I'll throw my NYNY question in here, is there a difference between the towers? Any reason to avoid a certain one, or are they basically the same.

No major differences in the rooms in each tower. The regular rooms do seem small. If you can get in to one of the suites much more comfortable.

I see that the OP has made up his mind to stay at NYNY. Think you will enjoy it over the MC. The casino in NYNY is so alive, Gallagers is a great steakhouse, and the centre bar is always fun in the evening.

I've stayed at both. NYNY was the first place I stayed at when I first went to Vegas back in 2009. MC isn't a bad place to stay. But the thing I didn't like was you can hear your neighbor have a full on conversation, almost like they are sitting next to you. Privacy is horrible, unless they've improved things. I haven't stayed there in 2 years. NYNY has some decent rooms. I like the casino and resteraunts better at NYNY. MC is pretty bland when it comes to eateries and casino. The pool is better at MC. One thing you need to remember about NYNY is the rollercoaster. In some rooms in can be loud when it's running around the building, plus the people screaming.
