"Papa Oom-Mow-Mow" by the Rivingtons, the same group and essentially the same melody as "Bird Is the Word" but a bit earlier. It was one of Ghoulardi's theme songs.

Runner-up is the novelty Christmas song, "I Yust Go Nuts at Christmas" by Yogi Yorgesson.

My grandparents had that on a 78 that I eventually destroyed by leaving it in my car. The flip side was 'Yingle Bells'. I imagine many people here don't have a clue what a 78 is.

I forgot about Hell, that's a great one to and I didn't even think about it being a novelty song. Probably one of my favorite songs period, I even have the album.

I have a few 78 records (a 10 inch platter vs. 12 inches of 33 1/3 LPs) and a turntable that plays them. Reminds me of the Aerosmith song about a guy whose girlfriend loves his big 10 inch ................. record of the band that plays the blues.

One song comes to mind that I am not sure would be a novelty song although a lot of people though it was funny. It Is "The Rodeo Song". A very crude and vulgar county/western song.

    Here's a few more...

Purple People Eater--1958--Sung by Cowboy Star Sheb Wooley--Who also probably created The Wilhelm scream...a movie sound effect that's been used hundreds of times.

Monster Mash---1962---Bobby "Boris" Picket....It was a graveyard smash...

    They're coming to take me away---1966---Napoleon XIV---I think it's really a love song---ho-ho hee-hee ha-haaa...

Trivia tidbit on this song. I have the 45 record (remember those?) and the B side is the song played backwards. The label is even printed backwards.

My favorite Dr. Demento song was Kinko the Kid Loving Clown (If the kids just love me back, I'll never wear a frown).

But my favorite novelty song is probably Basketball Jones. Any song that mentions Chris Schenkel in it has gotta be good.

Other favorites (mainly because they zing my childhood) were Disco Duck and Short People.

Super Bowl / Poker Trip Combo Platter
Bowling the USBC National tournament, I hope.

Before radio went completely corporate in Chicago, the oldies station used to play the novelty songs all the time at off peak times. I really loved the car songs like "Hot Rod Lincoln" the most.
