So we’re scheduled to fly out Jan 1st. Our normal trip-4 nights at Cal and comped dinners at Redwood and Second Street. Lots of gambling at MSS of course.

On December 17th I walk to the mailbox (sober) and slip on hidden ice and bang my head pretty good. My wife insists we go to the hospital and being a stubborn guy I say it is not necessary. Four days later, I’m not feeling right and she drives me to the 24 hour clinic. They have a look and tell her she should drive me to the hospital for a CT scan as quick as possible. They do the scan and admit me to the ICU. Cracked skull and a brain bleed! 5 days in ICU and then they moved me into rehab. I wish I remember some of this stuff, but zero memory of the first few weeks. While in rehab, they said I had a seizure while taking a shower. Back to ICU for who knows how many days. My wife thinks about 2-3 days, before they moved me back to rehab. Now I’m starting to remember more and beginning to walk, with a walker.

No driving for 90 days because of the seizure. No alcohol for 90 days and I’m on a catheter.

Exactly 5 weeks in the hospital and now I can’t do anything outside because it keeps snowing.

In addition, we had to cancel three vacations. Two to Vegas and one to AZ.

I’m on Medicare and have a decent supplemental, but I still can’t wait to see what this will cost me out of pocket.

OK, enough of my pity party! I guess Vegas in April, I hope!

    Take care of yourself, @Joe.
Your health and well-being are more important than anything. Except maybe the love of your wife.
    Feel better soon.

Joe, I was thinking just the other day that you hadn’t posted in awhile. Glad you’re on the mend and that you went to the hospital.

One of my family members recently had a low speed fall from a bike and struck his head on the pavement, no helmet, a very small abrasion on the eyebrow and cheek. He didn’t go to the hospital, the next day he drove about 100 miles back home where a friend noticed his leg was shaking. He went to the hospital and a CT scan indicated brain bleeding which was made worse due to use of a blood thinner because of heart AFIB. He was in ICU for 4 days.

    Hope you start feeling better.

Joe—-I recall you bought Boyd at 24$ or so (maybe 22) and once the market gets ahold of that post above.......sell now!!
Wives are great in times like that and you’re probably better off not remembering too much. Hope all stays on or ahead of schedule.

Head injuries are scary stuff. Cracked skull and brain bleed is nothing to sneeze at. I'm glad you got the proper care and attention.

Now that you are on the mend the hard part is keeping still since you can't drive and the snow keeps you inside. No alcohol and a damn catheter doesn't help either.

But it is a necessary endeavor and soon you'll be raring to go to Vegas in April. Until then take care of yourself.

Prayers to you for your continued recovery.
I had noticed you have been missing lately from our little family.
Remember Vegas isn't going anywhere, your health is the priority.

I was hoping your absence was just another minor kerfuffle and not a situation like you laid out, hope you get better soon. Stay inside and don't rush your recovery. this freezing rain crap we have been getting is wicked.

Joe, wishing you a fast and smooth recovery... and praise to Mrs. Joe for insisting you get taken to the hospital. Head injuries are nothing to take an "it's probably fine" approach to. Glad to hear April is a good possibility, I hope you'll update this thread with your recovery progress if you're comfortable doing so.

Very scary but after what happened I'm so glad that you are able to think clearly and type what actually happened. Things could have been very different...

Since this happened last year and in the last decade, here's wishing you great health and lots of love (and vacations!) in this new year and decade!

Take care joe, hope for a speedy recovery.

I used to bike to work but had one too many near misses that I finally lost my nerve. It's amazing how many buttheads think it's funny to tailgate a bicycle rider, try to get as close as they can just to be funny. (and scare the bicyclist). I got bumped once, guy tailgated me and nudged me. I fell off my bike, luckily no injuries but one tends to be a little gun shy as more of those near misses and nudging occur.

As for the nudging, cops came but couldn't do anything since they didn't see the incident so the guy got off scot free. They need to make it a crime to protect bike riders.
