    My Trip Report

Now this is the story all about how
My life got flipped turned upside down
And I’d like to take a minute just sit on your ass
I’ll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Vegas

Way down at Foxwoods on poker raised
On the green felt is where I spent most of my days
Check raisin’, max bets, and foldin’ all cool
Playing some hold ‘em against many a fool
When a couple of donks who were up to no good
Started spewing chips in my neighborhood
I scopped a couple of pots on boards that paired
Then booked to Vegas on American Air

I found the black limo when I landed there
The license plate said Mirage and had dice on the mirror
If anything I could say that this doesn’t suck
As I spread out in the back like I don’t give a f….
We pulled up to Mirage around 7 or 8
And a tip to the driver while I yelled “that was great!”
I looked at my kingdom, and tried to be gracious
While I sat on my throne as the prince of Vegas

(with all due respect to the Fresh Prince)

Or, for those who prefer their Wills a little more classical

To raise or not to raise—that is the question:
Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The ups and downs of outrageous players
Or to check raise against a sea of donkeys
And by raising end them. To donk, to bet
No more, and by a raise to say we end
The heartache and the thousand suck outs
That donks are prone to. ‘Tis a poker dream
Devoutly to be wished. To donk, to bet
To bet perchance to win, ay there’s the rub

That’s right, it’s that time again. Once again Basil is underway to the land of the desert gamble. Well, right now, Basil is more accurately on his way to Phoenix for a day of work meetings tomorrow, but will be able to duck out for a 4pm local flight, which then lands in Vegas at… 4pm (time zones are weird….). (Basil also really needs to stop referring to himself in the third person).

The plan is staying at the Mirage, meeting Ford there once again. The host has arranged for limo pickup (SWEET!!) and we need two beds, so options are limited, but we should have one of the few tower king rooms that actually have two queen beds. Also have VIP lounge access (yay morning coffee).

Only a couple of plans at this point: Friday (and hopefully Sunday) will be the $600, $250k guarantee tourney at the Wynn. Also planning on Saturday morning brunch at Border grill: we have reservations (but we’re going anyway… *rimshot*)

Beyond that, VP porn, food porn, poker porn, Apothecary Shoppe… porn? Hopefully no porn porn as the wife may be reading this thread.

The countdown is on, 4 ½ hours to go to Phoenix.

Wait, are you the same guy who sang “the Humpty Dance” at karaoke in Vegas (in the tr - I did not see it personally and no video proof was provided)? The fresh prince song just made me flash on that...apologies if not. Have a great time and win lots!

The one and only (although that didn't happen in Vegas, but did a riff on the Humpty Dance to start that trip report)

Currently somewhere ENE of Albuquerque. Finished the hangover, chewing some Nicorette (no, autocorrect, I am not chewing on Nicolette....) and hoping for a cup of coffee that doesn’t seem to be forthcoming (no plane drinks for me, have a business dinner once I land. While there will be drinking happening once we’re there, I should at least show up sober)

All right. On the ground at phx now. Some pictures below from the plane. Need to run to get the car, check in, then get to dinner so may be radio silent until later tonight. 24 hours until the real fun starts.

Quick Phoenix update as it's now 6 am local, and I have 3 hours before my meetings start.... [email protected]#$ time zones.

After waiting forever for a checked bag -I hate checking bags, but since I'm gone for a week, didn't have much choice. Actually, I sort of did: I was able to pack everything into a carry on, but it was a VERY tight fit. And my wife pointed out that there would be no room for the tiara that I need to buy her while I'm in Vegas, nor anything for my daughter. So, checked bag it is (and yes... a tiara. I don't get it either)

Anyway, once I finally got the bag, off to the rental center, which is a quite a drive on the shuttle from the airport. Finally got into a Sentra, and on my way... to traffic. Of course. Sitting in traffic trying to get from the airport to the restaurant (in Chandler for those who know the area), I realize I'm getting really hot. So I crank the AC. But I'm starting to sweat. WTF? Then I look down and realize I had the heated seat on... on high. Not my brightest moment. After sitting in traffic, then some more traffic, follow up by traffic, finally made it to the restaurant: Hop Social Tavern.

After looking over their 52 deep beer menu for quite some time (Tring, I think you'd like this place) I settled on a flight of 5:
    Both Brown Ales:
Hazelnut Brown Nectar, Rogue Ale (loved it, my favorite of the night)
Nut Brown Ale, Oak Creek Brewing (also very good)
    Both Ambers:
Oak Creek Amber, Oak Creek Brewing (good, not great)
Epicenter - Santan Brewing (I've had this before and like it quite a bit)
One red: I asked our waitress (Erica, who is fantastic if you're ever there) to pick any one except Kilt Lifter since I'd had it before, and she picked
Salida del Sol, Sentinel Peak Brewing (Solid choice by Erica, very tasty and easy to drink)

Ended up getting a pint of the Hazelnut to follow up, as well as a stuffed salmon dish that I'd also recommend. Had a great time catching up with the group- we managed only a little bit of work talk, and quite a bit of Vegas talk since one person there recently moved to Vegas from LA.

That's about it for now. Going to get ready for the day, drink some coffee, and hop on some east coast calls waiting for the meeting to start.

    Challenge Accepted!

Come and listen to Basil, about a gamblin’ degen
Playin’ lots of cards and tryin’ to win
And then one day he was playin’ some VP
When onto the screen came what he wants to see

Quads that is, and kicker, pointies.

Well the first thing you know Basil’s a thousandaire,
His degen friends said “get right outta there”
Said "Go to Vegas that’s what you should do”
“Check out the Mirage it’s got a great pool”

And casino, of course… restaurants, poker room

I don’t know if you’ll have time but there’s supposed to be some solid poker rooms in Phoenix. I know of a lot of poker players from Vegas that make the occasional trek to play in Phoenix.

There are. I used to travel out here for work much more frequently, and for longer trips, so would end up playing (not enough time this trip). I've played in two: Wild Horse Pass, which is very much a local's casino. The 1-2 games are what you'd expect, lots of nits/rocks who come there every day and wait for aces. Physical room is okay, nothing great, but clean enough and run relatively well.

Talking Stick is a much bigger casino and tourist destination, as well as a large poker room (think the Venetian room before they shrank it). Getting onto a table there is chaos, but once you get a seat, the games can be pretty good.

Apparently the phrase “where to rent a tiger in Vegas” is now in Ford’s search history.

    He wanted to surprise me.
