I've done the drive on a snowy day. If you're in an appropriately equipped vehicle (snow tires, or at the very least all seasons with the M+S [mud & snow] designation) and have driven in the snow before, it's not a big deal. Some of the mountain roads were a little tight - I may have gotten white knuckles a couple of times, but my underpants remained clean. If you've driven SR-76 to Harrah's SoCal, I'd say that's scarier (minus the snow).

Be aware that if it is snowing, CHP may have chain controls in place. There are 3 different levels, but I've heard they'll usually shut down the roads before actually requiring chains on all vehicles (R3). R2 requires chains for FWD/RWD vehicles, but AWD vehicles only need to have chains available (e.g. carry them in the trunk, just in case).

No idea if rental cars come with chains. If you're renting, definitely go for AWD if there's a chance of snow. If I remember correctly, coming from the airport means you won't have to go up the twisty mountain roads I mentioned...that's only if you're approaching from SoCal.

@dbook I think you have some great info from the folks who have responded. If you are flying into Reno and you do not need a car at your destination, I would recommend the airport shuttle (Fabismonte provided the link) that drops off at all of the South Lake Tahoe casino/hotels. If you are a CET high roller, then of course the Harrah's limo is the way to go!

Thanks very much win4me, FABismonte and Eric1285!!! I got on that shuttle website and it looks incredibly convenient!! And for that price I'll gladly let someone else do the driving! I've lived in the snow belt in n.e. ohio for over 60 years and have now retired to Vegas. So now I need a new vacation destination and I'm thinking Tahoe would do really well!

    Belated congratulations!
    Awesome news!

And now that I know that Santa is a master chef I'm just leaving him milk from now on. I think he can make his own cookies!

Again, biggest congrats and Merry Christmas! :santa:
