The resort fee is just like an auto repair shop. Get your vehicle repaired and look at that bill. It'll have something like shop supplies or HazMat. Just another way to get your money. I know I'm a service manager and instructed to make sure we change this fee. We're 10% up to 100.00 max. I don't agree with it but it's my job.

We can all complain about these increases, but we will still go to Vegas. Until the visitation rates start dropping, the casinos will continue to raise the resort and parking fees. It is called "supply and demand". I have adjusted by reducing my Vegas trips from 4-5/year to 2-3/year. And at least one trip will be at an Off-Strip resort with no fees.

If a company books an event in Vegas, do they typically get waived or reduced resort fees for their attendees?

Also- I wonder if they measure employee productivity compared to resort fees. How much time in a day does a front desk person deal with questions about resort fees?

I wish the downtown casinos weren't small, dirty, and rundown, because I wish I had an alternative to the Strip casinos for vacations to Vegas. Unfortunately, downtown casinos are really just for locals.

I disagree that they are for locals primarily. Downtown is doing a lot and there are options. You won't find Cosmo-level rooms, but there are some good rooms downtown. And the gaming is much better for a low-roller like myself.

I've been pretty much a downtown gambler for a decade now. Yes, the places don't have the glamour of the Strip properties, but the casino floors at places like Golden Nugget, Downtown Grand, and the D are more than adequate for my gambling needs. And hopefully Derek Stevens takes it to a new level (for downtown anyway) when he builds out 18 Fremont.

But actually, if one didn't like the atmosphere downtown but wanted a break from the Strip, some of the locals properties like Red Rock Station and Green Valley Ranch are quite nice. Only drawback of course is that they are spread out and pretty much require renting a car, which also means not imbibing if you want to leave the property.

I just want some glamour and pizazz when I go to Vegas and when I visited Downtown on my last trip I was sorely disappointed by what I found. It felt like pretty much any local casino scene. I could just stay in New Jersey for that. (Not that I visit Atlantic City much anymore since they also started charging huge resort fees.)

Conventions can and do negotiate down the resort fees, yes. I paid a $20 per day resort fee at Cosmo last week. I was in for a convention.

Fundamentally, a dollar of resort fee reduction is the same as a dollar of room rate reduction, so the focus really should be on what is the best overall deal possible.

    No.

There are only two MLife hotels that I have a host at, Aria and Belliagio. I get offers from every other MLife hotel, and all of them have no resort fees.

Thanks for the update Sonya, even though it is a bummer.

Not much can be done about. As others have stated, economically Vegas can charge all the extra fees and people keep on coming.

    Restaurants - way too expensive
    Shows - way too expensive
    Resorts - way too expensive
Gambling - minimums are way too expensive
Gambling Odds - getting worse by the year
    Resort Fees
    Parking Fees

Las Vegas has reached the point for me, where my entertainment dollars are probably going to be going elsewhere. This next trip is my last blow out trip to Las Vegas. I will be there in May.

We do most of gambling in Deadwood SD. now. We are definitely low rollers and get way more bang for our buck in Deadwood. Vegas is just to expensive anymore. We might fly down once a year now but can't afford to gamble like we used to. Everything else cost too much. Deadwood treats us well.

I still find Vegas to be quite cheap...

Put the Cosmo in the middle of NYC or SF or any other big city and the room rates would be $500+

What other city in the world can you stay at a fully featured resort for less than $100 a night?

Heck, Vegas is the ONLY place in the USA that you can stay at a 5 star luxury resort for $100-$200 a night.

So yeah, resort fees suck. But Vegas isn't "expensive"

I guess what I'm trying to say I got more for my money 20 years ago than I do now. I know inflation and stuff should go up. Back then I could come with 300 dollars and have a heck of a time. Now I bring 2K and wonder if it will last. But you probably wouldn't remember 20 years ago.

LOL I want what this guy is havin'

The subjectivity in this thread is what keeps me coming back. Kinda like when you read reviews on Amazon and you come across that one that is ridiculously contrarian

In all fairness to Jidery, he happens to be correct about the NYC hotel rates. I live in NYC and a hotel that has the amenities and room size of a place like Cosmo would definitely command a very high price if it were located in the heart of midtown. I love NY, but it's a tourist trap when it comes to price gouging. Hotel rooms in NYC are microscopic in comparison to the rooms that people get for their money in Vegas, and the better hotels in NYC do go for well over $500 a night, because they know they can get it.

As for Vegas being the ONLY place in America where you can stay at a five star hotel for $100 - $200 per night...that I can't say because I haven't tried to book five star hotels all across America.

You won't get an argument from me. I used the word subjectivity for a reason. Just tired of the comparison rationale, Las Vegas vs. XYZ. I wouldn't compare against NYC, Miami, and others because the cities really aren't the same size nor have the same amenities. Additionally, I'm not getting these $100-$200 rates at Aria/Cosmo, I'm regularly getting quoted much higher.

You are a perfect example of a savvy gambler. You are visiting less due to this sort of thing and changing the way you stay/play. But that goes against what you said about people still going to Vegas. Gamblers that viewed Las Vegas as a good deal in the past are going less, with some not going at all. And due to that Vegas is pumping up other revenue streams like fees, (Resort, Parking, extra dining tax ETC) to offset the loss of gambling revenue.

Here is an article posted after the fiscal was closed.

"Slot handle on the Strip was down 8.2 percent, while table drop fell 24.3 percent"

    http://www.cnbc.com/2016/06/30/las-vegas-strip-gaming-revenue-drops-for-third-month-in-a-row.html

Vegas now has to chase new money, club kids, conventioneers, shoppers ETC to make up the void left from the real gamblers. So they continue to chase players away and have to raise the fees to stay even with the money they lost. Chicken and Egg if you ask me.

Is Vegas cheap compared to 2 of the most expensive cities in the nation? Sure, I guess, if you want to look at it that way. But what if you put Cosmo in the middle of Kentucky? It does work both ways.

There are many reasons why Vegas hotels are cheap compared to other major cities, mainly concentration and supply. From Mandalay Bay to Encore there are 120,000 rooms within a 3 mile stretch. Not even a 3 mile radius, but a 3 mile stretch. Compare that to every hotel room in the entire city of New York (just 106,000 rooms) spread out all over the city. Supply and demand.

If New York was charging $100-$200 a night, the same as LV, you'd be damn sure people would be living in them VS tourists staying in them. The average home price in Las Vegas is $200K. The average in Brooklyn is $800K. Its all comparative.

I'm in Chicago, I can stay a full fledged resort in Downtown (onsite restaurants, indoor pool, spa, onsite shopping ETC) for the same price as Las Vegas, after you add in the Vegas resort fees that is. Midwestern money is not the same as NY or SF.

Most of the complaints are not about Vegas being "expensive". Its about Vegas once being a bargain, but moving farther and farther from that every year.
