We will probably fold this over into the resort fee threads sticky above, but I thought this needed to get out there.

Just got this from a MGM Resorts rep. Pretty sure this will stir up the rest of the Strip soon too.

MGM Resorts will be increasing resort fees as detailed below - effective Tuesday, November 8, 2016.
    • Aria / Vdara / Bellagio from $32 to $35 ($39.20)
    • Luxor / Excalibur from $26 to $29 ($32.48)
    • Circus Circus from $21 to $24 ($26.88)
On the launch date, all existing reservations will be grandfathered in with the current resort fee. Reservations booked moving forward would be based on the new resort fee.

No mention of any changes to what is included with the resort fee though.

There are CURRENTLY no changes being made to :
    MGM Grand
    The Signature
    Mandalay Bay
    Delano Las Vegas
    The Mirage
    New York-New York
    Monte Carlo

Mandalay Bay by far has the best list of nonsense for their resort fee. They offer unlimited local faxes as part of their resort fee. Priceless.

I have to admit I have not paid resort fees in Vegas with the exception of a couple room nights I booked for family members that were not comped.
When the resort fee thing started I thought it was not a big deal.
Sick of getting nickel and dimed for WiFi and gym use I figured there was some value for me.
However,it has now gone way beyond reasonable and is a total misrepresentation of actual costs.

In looking at a couple nights in early December where the room rate at Vdara is $139 the new resort fee adds over 28%
At Aria for same nights at $179 it adds almost 22%.

I guess I would not object if they put it in the room rate.Business is booming it's only going to get worse.

I think I mentioned this earlier, but eventually everybody will get rooms comped. In fine print the resort fees will be $300/night.

    Classic my wife.

Walking the dog tonight I mention fees going up and she yea for the pool we never get to use in December.

I tell her no it's for the gym, newspaper, phone call and internet (which we do use).

She says well why don't they charge us for the stuff we use and not the useless stuff we will never use.

    Bingo.

Why the charge? Most of us know these are just bogus charges to nickel and dime their customers. Instead of raising their rates accordingly they just add it into the resort fees.

As for MGM increasing their resort fees.....No problem for me as I don't normally stay at MGM resorts anyway so they can raise it all they want. Same with Harrahs, raise em all they want. The problem is that people keep staying at these resorts and pay their bs resort fees so the companies will keep doing it as long as the customers will still come back.

Lot of righteous indignation in this thread and I get it, but you (and I) all still have countdown timers for resorts that have high resort fees.

As long as the room rates stay low (or comped) then I look at the resort fee as a necessary evil. We all vote with our wallets. I'm more than willing to pay the $30+ fee not to have to stay off-strip somewhere and spend money on cabs or Uber to get back to where I want to go.

Resort fees have been around for what, the better part of a decade now? Think it's time we get over it.

It's nearly impossible to get accurate results from room rate searches.
There should be a limit or cap on the maximum amount a hotel or resort can charge for a resort fee....
or... resort fees need to be disclosed and included in the room rates.

If resorts think they can get away with it....they will continue to push the envelope.

I rarely stay at any MGM property without using a comp.
Even fully comped rooms cost nearly $40 per night in resort fees
and you are expected to play a certain amount to cover your "comp"
Plus there is the incidentals hold - if paying with DEBIT it could be a 10 day hostage situation..

My trip in April will be the first time staying in a condo property....no resort fees, 2 bedrooms, washer/dryer, full kitchen, pool and hot tub free are open early/late. Free wifi and scheduled shuttle service.
7 nights in a 2 bedroom condo was cheaper than 3 nights in a single room in a strip casino/resort!
I understand that there will NOT be daily maid service, but I'm totally okay with that!

thanks for the "heads up" Scott. Not a good year for MGM customers as they also now charge for parking as well. They did give free parking to locals until the end of the year, but that will end soon. I've heard rumors that a lot of the shop owners are not happy at all and have been quoted as business being down 10%-15% since the paid parking went into effect.

We are in Vegas at a condo right now... WiFi, pool, clubhouse. The Strip hotels have lost us. The locals' casinos and restaurants are benefiting. I hope business continues to go down until the silliness with parking fees and resort fees stops. We are having a great time.

Where this is the most crazy is on the lower tier hotels.

Excalibur/Luxor Pyramid room.... $40 for basic room (random figure) but then $30 for resort fees and possibly $8 for parking?

We've been lucky enough to get resort fees comped, but I hate seeing affordable options for people wither away. :(

When I first stayed in Vegas right around 21, it was in a crappy, but dirt cheap room in Circus Circus, but it's still a nostalgic memory for me. There was something fun about it....kind of like when you eat cruddy, cheap, but kind of fun food. (Like a hot dog.) It also made slowly working up to nicer rooms such a treat!

When you pay a lot for a cruddy room? There's nothing nostalgic or fun about it.....

Why aren't resort fees built into the room rate? Why is it a separate fee?

Resort fees are not only in Las Vegas but also in Hawaii and other leisure spots. I'm going to Maui next year, and the resort fee at Andaz Maui is $40 per day! Build it into the rate!

I am fortunate enough to have never had to pay a resort fee due to comps. However the all-in cost for my 4 nights coming up in December would be 680.96 for a regular room at Aria. That's 170.24 a night, I am certain, that I couldn't stay in any major city in America for 170 a night in a comparable room. To stay in my beloved home town of Cleveland for that weekend I would pay more.

With these increases, it seems to me that MLife is further separating their tiers of hotels. With the number of visitors continuing to climb each year things are not going to change. We talk about the good old days of great gaming and cheap eats, but the casino operators are now talking about the current good old days were bottle service, bad gaming rules and celebrity chefs are filling their coffers. These profit increasing measures are working, until that changes the new fees will continue.

Fees suck but are a part of everything we do. I am looking at WS tickets and the price alone is outrageous but then the resellers are adding fees on top too. They are a fact of life.

Many people keep saying that resort fees are here to stay, we should get used to them by now...yadayadayada....

I might be in the minority, but I DON'T think resort fees are here to stay.
I think at some point some regulating will happen just like it did for airline prices.
I believe that at some point resort fees will be included in the rate.
You'll be able to see a breakdown of your nightly rate and the fees/services it includes.

resort fees are not built into the cost of room because.
    Artificial lower rates on searches.
Most important IMO - NO payment of commission to 3rd party bookers on resort fee. If they just raised the room price, hey would probably have to add 10+% more just to cover the commission paid out to 3rd parties.
