    First time playing Pirate Treasures.

I’d passed it before because of the scary pirate cat, but it’s not too bad once you get past the somewhat confusing at first mechanic.

Every pirate cat that lands locks in place as a wild and every cannon that lands increases the size of that reel by one position. Reach the key in that reel and win what’s in the chest.

Whenever a spin does not contain a cat or cannon, the reels reset including the chests above the reels.

What’s cool is that as the persistence progresses, that spin is more valuable because of the locked wilds and the grown reels. So you’re likely to end on a good win.

I’m trying to work out what they’re doing behind the scenes, because even though I saw this Grand just once (also saw the Major once), doesn’t seem likely that I was actually that close to getting it, especially at a $2.50 bet. So probably some shenanigans going on. I would think they’re evaluating the reel layout and changing them per spin, but that gets iffy by the regulators so I’m not quite sure. They could be scripting the whole outcome in the set of spins, which also sucks because I hate scripted games. But definitely something going on. More often than not, I noticed a cat landing on reel 5 to save me for the next spin.

Overall a fun game and got me some play time.

Couldn’t figure out a way to get to the balcony area to see the marching band, which was performing next to the pool with Las Vegas Bowl announcements.

May have just been reserved for the red shirts.

Food looks pretty good. While there you have to try Night Market. Apparently best Thai in town with a great wine selection, orange wines, etc.

    Speak of the devil!

Just back from Night + Market.

Last time I was at Virgin, I played enough to get a $450 food comp but only had one night to use it. Called a bunch of people but no one could make it so only used it on myself with a bunch of Night + Market dishes and ice cream (and branded socks that I was going to give away as a Random Act). Figured next time I have to get the lobster pad thai again.

Got the sticky coconut rice and mango for dessert but ordered it to come out first in case we were too full at the end.

Last time I made a mental note to ask for less salt next time and this was next time but forgot.

I could live on these beans and rice (which they added on their own and then charged $3). 04ED71E2-CAF3-4C1F-8471-1E345D6027A2.jpeg

    Shortrib and broccoli.

Is that lobster pad Thai? If so, did it work as a dish? Because I love all those foods but couldn't see myself ordering that...

I questioned what “CNF” meant on the bill, thinking it was a coronavirus cleaning fee or something.

The server said they had three branches in LA and it was a way to balance out the prices because the Vegas branch is cheaper with the same food. I said, why not just add $1 to each entree? He said because they want to keep prices low.

Kinda circular logic but I let it go.

Yep lobster pad thai. Pretty decent and worth ordering but I’d say too sugary for a stand-alone meal.

Last time, I had a pastrami pad see ew which was excellent and spicy.

Resting in the comfortable room, watching the new Sandra Bullock Netflix movie The Unforgivable.

As far as I know, Virgin and Resorts World (haven’t stayed there yet) are the only two hotels in Vegas that have Google Chromecast. Works so well, and in high def too.

Will go down and play a bit more amongst all the ASU fans in red shirts. One gave me a $.50 slot voucher from the ticket kiosk, and lucky money must be gambled.

I'm normally pretty blase about fees but I've always thought this one was silly. To the server's response, I don't think there's any chance it's to "balance out" the pricing, it's just a "because we can" fee. In particular, I call BS on the fact that Vegas is even cheaper in the first place, because if you look up the menu online, the garlic green beans are $15 in WeHo, $13 in Silver Lake, and $13 in Venice, but $16 in Vegas. Other dishes like the lobster pad thai and the Wagyu with XO sauce didn't track directly (those are listed on the Vegas menu as exclusive to that location). And I really have a hard time believing that this makes a financial difference anyway. I suspect either the server was fed this information and didn't question it, or just made it up.

Thanks for checking on other prices. I didn’t think to do that. I don’t recall seeing it on the menu, and this is my first encounter with it.

I looked up my receipt when I was there in August and no CNF fee, so they must’ve added it since then.

I’m surprised they don’t just bump up the prices *and* add the CNF.

My hope is that I get it comped, since the comp is on the subtotal, and taxes and fees drop off.
Then I can blow a raspberry at their gorilla tax.

My review of The Unforgivable (admittedly half watched): I liked when Sandy and Viola yelled at each other in hi def.

Will pop downstairs for a bit. Might do a root beer float to go with some slotting.

If you make it in that direction, Ellis Island makes their own root beer and it's excellent. The casino is otherwise unremarkable, though, and my recollection is that the root beer is only available at certain times at certain restaurants.

Afters ice cream at Virgin was closed so had to go without.

I like Ellis rootbeer, hope they have it for NYE. Booked there since everywhere else is pricey and sold out.

My favorite might be Virgil’s, available by the bottle at El Cortez.

Without my lucky root beer float, never got any quads.

But did have a surprise spade win on Knight’s Keep. Forgot how volatile that game can be.

Mohegan Sun is the only casino I know that is not transparent in how status points are earned.

Apparently they change on a whim and can change per level and even per casino. At one point video poker was $471 coin-in per point to match the number of tribe members.

All we players know is how many status points we need to get to certain tiers.

I asked the rewards desk and they said that it’s proprietary information, that not even they themselves are told. And since status points aren’t always shown onscreen (barring removing and inserting your card every so often), it’s also hard to calculate.

I earned close to what I did on my last visit (albeit over 3 nights, though not in a suite but I’m thinking 3 nights in a regular room = 2 nights in a suite compwise), so I’m anticipating all my food to be comped.

I lost more last trip, so that may also be a factor. Hard to estimate our backend comps when they don’t let us know what 1 point equals. Adding @JulianC in case he knows how Mohegan/Virgin works.

They do have a 1:2 promo until the end of the year — convert your Momentum Dollars to freeplay at 2x. And at 8am tomorrow, I should be able to do my second $175 freeplay offer as well as the third offer next week. I don’t think a stay is required, but we’ll see. I’d converted the first $175 freeplay offer yesterday to $130 in video poker before going to 0.

At least I’m pretty assured of rooms through March/April with at least $100 freeplay. They also have a slot tournament coming up next month which I may do. Even though off-Strip, it helps having a place to go to break up the CET 5-nighters.

A couple other things as I check out of Virgin.

Only casino hotel I know to have toilet seat covers in the room.

    B565863A-1A24-45FA-A4B5-CCD542F53DF3.jpeg

They have outlets at the base of the couch. Nice touch, even though there are plenty of outlets elsewhere. Must be difficult to rearrange furniture.

    Converted $231 freeplay to $200.

46 hands of video poker and when down to $1, it said freeplay was finished.

I did a $1 hand just in case but it didn’t credit back.

Have a call into the host for my folio review. A bit irritating that I went to two others and no response. Maybe they won’t comp.

See ya next week for $175 no-stay freeplay, Virgin!
