“Excessive” is not a particularly definitive term

All I can tell you is, there's going to be some "excessive" drinking at @comfortablynumb's residence in Cass County Missouri tonight [IMG]

At first glance, it looked like my county is on the southwest end of a "belt" of darker colors that runs from eastern Nebraska up through Wisconsin.

However (comma) when I checked the source of the data from the link in the article, it shows that my county is one of the healthiest in the state and country.

What was surprising is that my county is darker (more drinking) than Clark County, Nevada, but I assume this pertains to residents and not visitors.

They don't seem to define it, nor make any distinction between abuse (which many of us are guilty of occasionally doing) and dependency, as in true alcoholism.

I once traveled to Buffalo based solely on my penchant for hot wings, a Wisconsin road trip now seems like a no-brainer! Chauffeured, of course.

I believe there's more bars than restaurants and grocery stores combined. I might be getting the fact wrong but it's a lot

My Parish (Louisiana has to be different), is a particularly dark shade of blue. Bravo! We have a local brewery called Abita. Try them if you see it. They make some good stuff. Beware of the Andygator. I think at some point they had to lower the alcohol content.

IIRC the "parish" term goes back to the Catholic Church and the French Catholic influence on Louisiana. Catholics refer to their churches as "parishes" which have boundaries, like a county :)

I guess alcohol is one way to deal with the cold. All the places really cold really drink a lot.

Also, Louisiana law (ditto with Quebec) is based upon Napoleonic Code and not upon British Common Law as in the other states and provinces. (Having two lawyers in the family does render some occasional trivia.) :)

An article I looked at seemed to be saying they based it on public information from CDC, which is turning on individual self reporting. They define "excessive" as more than 5 drinks in an encounter, 4 in women.

I'm actually a little surprised that it wasn't higher, but it's all of Clark, not just the Strip, and also whether it was based on residents reporting (which on the one hand is skewed high by the Strip all the out-of-town visitors would be excluded). It's an interesting discussion about methodologies.

Just so the unaware know we don’t have a county that is shirking it’s responsibilities. That white spot is a lake. I am positive there is a lot of drinking goin on there though.

Oh yeah, especially during ice fishing season. I had my fair share of wineskin flasks full of blackberry brandy out on Lake Winnebago on those cold as hell December days listening to Packers' games on the radio.

I am so glad I have never been a drinker. I have never understood the need to over indulge in alcohol.
