After 15 years of living with a part blue healer we had to put him down. He was diagnosed with bone cancer by two different veterinarians. I feel guilty after having him put down 2 day after the fact. I still expect to see him when I walk through the door or when I head outside he would be there. He was with us four months after his diagnosis and I tried hard to make it some of his best. In the end he has started losing the use of his rear leags and I knew the time had come but that didn't make it a bit easier to do.

I am so sorry for your loss. Putting a beloved pet down is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. You gave him a loving home for 15 years and prevented him from suffering at the end.

    My condolences!

So sorry. You have nothing to feel guilty about. It’s a hard decision to make, but it’s better than letting your beloved pet suffer. You did the right thing for your long time companion.

Despite all of our flaws, somehow we were lucky enough that dogs chose us as their companions.

    Hang in there.

It is absolutely heart wrenching to say your good byes to a pet. We put down our amazing Beagle 6 years ago. He was blind and then went deaf. It was one of the toughest decisions we ever were forced to make. In the end we knew his quality of life just wasn't what it needed to be. We felt extreme guilt for a very long time. It took one full year before we could bring ourselves to think of another, but we did, we rescued another beagle and while he will never replace Zeus, our new buddy Cooper is a joy in our lives.

Time will heal for sure, but you definitely never forget.

    Condolences, @dtmk66

My minpin, Buddy, is hard of hearing but his vision and smell are still going strong. I hope he has a few good years left in him.

So sorry to hear this. Over there years, we've had to put numerous dogs down due to cancer or old age. Every time it tears me up. We have three dogs now, aged 11, 12, & 13. I forecast hard days ahead.

Sorry...I've had to do it a few times. not easy but it's the right thing to do. When animals suffer often it's hard to tell by the way the dog acts vs a human in pain.

Be thankful for the years you had and it is best for the pet. Don't feel guilty.

Every time I cried because I lost a member of my family but I remember the joy of having them, you can't let them suffer.

It's tough but it gets more bearable with time, do I still miss them...hell yes but I know I did the right thing as it wasn't fair for them to suffer.

The four months after the diagnosis was beyond tough I am sure

Hang in there, it hasn't been that long and it's tough but it gets more bearable with time and think of the good times with your part blue healer. Do I still miss them..hell yes but I remember the joy of having them, you can't let them suffer.

So sorry for your loss. I had to put my mini dachshund down in February. He had such a wonderful character. He was a combination of Dennis the Menace and Robin Williams. Mischievous, loyal, lovable, and always good for a laugh. He had a large tumor in his nasal passage that started to bleed frequently. After many trips to the vet and different medications we made the hard choice. He was about 13 years old. We still have another mini weenie. She will be 15 this year. She's deaf, had a stroke, has chronic ear infections and I'm pretty sure she has some dementia. But she is the sweetest dog. She does not have the character of her little brother but she is a sweetheart. For several months she was still lost without him. I guess she is still lost without him.

So sorry for your loss. Pets are family! I, sadly, have gone through this a few times and it never gets easier.

Only those that have gone through this understand the internal emotion and hurt. Those that lost a dog without putting it down also suffer terribly.

Done it twice. Will never forget.

In some ways, it it is harder when a loved one passes. (speaking more of the age thing - not the unexpected ones)

We cut out Aug trip short to rush home to ours as she was not doing well at the kennel.
Two days later we called a Vet that actually comes to the home to say goodbye.
16+ years of wonderful memories and yes still scenarios in which we expect to see their little faces.

I didn't see anyone post it but here is a link to the Rainbow Bridge poem

It is such a gut wrenching loss; I am so very sorry. We lost our Buster in 2016 the same way…bone cancer. We miss that boy every single day. May your happy memories bring you comfort.

    Very sorry for your loss.
    It is absolutely terrible.
Had to put my 11 year old Isabella down a couple months ago.
    Miss her every day.
