I live within easy driving distance of Atlantic City and Vegas is about a thousand times better. The only regular show in AC is "Legends in Concert" at Bally's, which is basically the same as what you see in Vegas. Other than that, there are a few concert venues with no resident performers. They do comp drinks, but the drinks aren't even as good as what you get in Vegas. For instance, when you order a beer, they will give you a plastic cup with 5 oz. Pathetic.

The casinos in PA are even worse. They are basically just locals bars with slot machines and table games. It is boring as hell. I don't even understand why people bother with them.

    Local casinos are lame. Anywhere.

    No free drinks.
No walking from casino to casino with a drink in hand. (No walking from casino to casino period.)
You cannot get as drunk as you do in Vegas casinos, because they will cut you off and/or remove you.
    No sports betting.
Very few or none celebrity chef restaurants.
Very few or none high end restaurants at all.
No mixologists making fancy concoctions (I can drink rum and coke at home).
    No views or swanky bars.

I don't pay for hotel, airfare, and rarely food, but I am not biased. If I was relegated to local casinos (even with the same comps), I would never gamble or go there. In a word, LAME.

I am with the OP. I live in Salt Lake City. Our Nevada border is 90 mins away. Sure the hotel's aren't as grand and over the top. They have a concert hall where has been's come to play. We dont have the celebrity chef's or the rides and attractions.

    The upside is
Free drinks. And they come fast and furious.
Walking distance to 4 casinos where you can carry your beers.
    Sports betting
Single deck 5 dollar blackjack. Even on a saturday night. In the nicest casino.
Super awesome dealers who have been there for years.
Decent buffets (so I hear, I dont do buffets)

Its great for degenerate gamblers. I have never lost more than a couple hundred dollars for an entire night (12+ hours) of blackjack while I easily had 20 drinks for free (typically I am only +/- $50). In Vegas at 15-20 a hand I have blown a grand before midnight. I love my local casinos, but only for gambling. Vegas has all of the food/people watching/excitement/pools/shows that I cant get. I also can't do vegas for more than 4 days. Living as close, most of my friends/family call it a long weekend trip. Meeting people who stay for weeks is just crazy to us.

For us, gambling = Nevada. We live and have lived near some of California's nicest tribal casinos, ones with great hotels and even golf, and they hold out 0.0% interest to us.

A few factors are at work. Foremost, gambling isn't that important to us, certainly not as a must-do vacation activity. Of course we play in Reno or Laughlin or Vegas, but it's not all we do and it's not something we feel a desire to do elsewhere. Sonya also hit on another factor … walk though these joints and it's simply depressing. I don't know, maybe we just gloss over it in Vegas, but whether over here at Chumash or down at Barona or Casino Moron Go, the mass of players just look so, well, desperate. Fun? Nope.

Travel is liberating not a chore, btw.

Here in Halifax, the local casino has...

    - No FREE DRINKS
    - No Video Poker
    - Terrible COMPS...went twice in February, dropping around 5k total (not coin in, actual loss), playing machines and my March mailer from them was for $10 in "FREE" slot play, I kid you not!

Even though Vegas is quite far, it's it totally worth the 8+ hours worth of flights and $600-$800 cost.

Oh did I mention tomorrow in Las Vegas the forecast is 22c (73f) degrees and sun and here it is 40cm of snow and a blizzard?

    Hands down...Vegas BABY!!!

What I think is largest Indian casino in the state is 25 miles from our house.
    No free drinks
    Terrible odds on VP
And most of the customers look desperate.

Haven't been there in over a decade. Vegas is for our gambling bug. We have been to other cities with Indian gaming and just not do it. There are plenty of other things to do on vacation.

I admit we went into a bar in Scottsdale last year and they had a little booth in the bar for off track race horse betting. I'd never seen that before, so we did piss away a few dollars on that. But that's about it.

Mainly because I've seen locals lose their mortgage and food money at these casinos. Gambling addiction is as bad as any drug addiction and I want no part of it. I would rather drive the 6 hours and make a mini vacation out of it, instead of driving across town and getting kicked in the balls.

I'll go to the local Casinos (3 of them) about once a year and that's usually on my birthday month for free bingo, buffet and a t-shirt.

Those 2 are 90% of it for me.

I can't take a 5 day vacation and spend the entire 5 days within the same hotel walls. That simply doesn't sound fun to me.

People just have a different attitude when on vacation. Going to a local casino can simply be part of a night out to kill 2 hours. I've been to some casinos in Tunica/Biloxi that have come close, but it still just isn't the same. I enjoy them, but in different ways. They are the destination to go gamble a little between larger Vegas trips. Go away for a weekend instead of go away for a week.
