Wow! I remember these, now that you mention it. On the upper floors, IIRC. No clue if they are still there. I was more of a Bloomies/Alexanders girl back then.

Last time I was there, they still had them. They're showing a lot of wear and tear, but a definite historical attraction! I like the elevators there too.

yeah, I think they're on the Broadway side in the middle of that big weird makeup/purse section that I have no use for. The elevators on the other side of the connector, where the men's side used to be, are also pretty old school, but also really annoying.

As an aside, I do a good chunk of my shopping from Macy's, but I grew to hate the Herald Square location. They just move everything around for no damned reason every now and then.
I'm assuming you mean in the plot? Because "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" was on TV the other night, and I was reminded of the whole John Mulaney bit about that movie. "That's a stupid movie title. 'Lost in New York'? The streets are numbered. How'd you get lost in New York?"

By the way, you are going to Rolf's, right?

And if not, also check out either of the Indian restaurants at 1st and 6th, Milon or Panna II. They're... really something.

I got lost in the movie but I also get lost on the trains. I often end up going in the wrong direction.

My man, the stops are numbered. If the numbers are going up, then you're going uptown. If the numbers are going down, then you're going downtown.
So these guys are actually a quirk of New York City recycling habits. While NYC recycles bottles and cans, if you toss it in the recycling bin, the deposit doesn't come back. And there aren't really supermarket recycling machines like there are in the suburbs. So what these guys do is pick out the containers with deposits from the general recycling mix, sort it out themselves, and then bring them to bulk recyclers, who pay a penny or so extra for pre-sorted materials. There's a symbiotic relationship between them and the building staff, usually. And let me tell you, these guys bust their asses.

It's a pretty interesting economic study. However, they don't usually take the subway...

That's another confusing thing. B&D seem similar. I was focused on the D and watched the B go by. Took D to Grand St

When we get to the platforms I can't figure out the direction.

I have a client who is in the redemption business in NY, as in redeeming deposits for cans and bottles. The guys bringing in the cans (bottles are too heavy) are sometimes referred to as "land clammers". The redemption agent pays $.05 per bottle or can to the collector, and he gets $.015 (one and a half cents) for processing the can. At one point, the beer distributors and soda companies were making a fortune on the "unredeemed" bottles and cans, but the law changed a few years ago whereby the state gets (I believe) 60% of the "unredeemed" funds at the end of the year. Its many millions a year that now goes to Albany instead of the pockets of the beer and soda distributors. Needless to say, the millionaire owners of the Bud and MillerCoors distributors in the Empire State were none too pleased when the law passed.

There is proposed legislation in NY that the deposit will go to $.10 per container and will be expanded to other products as well.

You made it to Chinatown! It's grown tremendously while Little Italy, just adjacent to it, has shrunk tremendously. Lunch looks fantastic. We always eat in Chinatown and then walk to Little Italy for dessert...seeing how Chinese desserts don't compare to Italian but we love Chinese food. Oh, the shrimp look fantastic; so does Kim. What a smile!

Scoping out the train station for tomorrow's Amtrak ride. Going to see how we like the Northeast Regional.

Bought 1/2lb of chestnuts and 2 persimmons in China Town, $4 total.

I like chestnuts fresh but not roasted. Growing up we had a couple of trees in our backyard.

Just keep in mind, that for the most part in Manhattan, the downtown train will be heading south and the uptown train will be heading north. When going downtown, remember that the head of the train will be pointing south, and v/v and use that as your clue to direction.

There are some exceptions, such as when the B/D runs along Houston or 53rd.

LOL, have you learned how to pronounce "Houston" yet? :) :) :) :)
