To start off, I agree with everything that has been said about if you’re not enjoying it, it is becoming an issue financially, etc., then taking a break is absolutely the right choice.

However, I follow the trip reports a ton and am struggling with the $100k figure. My wife and I go to Vegas at least once a month with around a $30k bankroll (and local casinos plenty in between). I play VP and she plays Texas Holdem. We have had some bad trips, but on a whole for the year are nowhere near that number. When we play and hit a good or big one, we do generally have a rule of quitting for the trip and going home a winner to offset the others because there is always next time and a trip near. When we looked at our 2018 statements our average loss per trip is around 3300. Our viewpoint (dual income, no kids or mortgage) has always been that we are essentially getting an all inclusive trip to Vegas on average for 3300 for 4 nights at the Cosmo, fountain view, unlimited food, booze, shows and gambling to an extent...with the hope of eventually the big one!

Again, doesn’t really matter your number if you’re not having fun...

I’m happy to hear you and your bride are enjoying a different side of Vegas. As @smerrian said, there is a great big world out there to see!

To be honest, we gambled a LITTLE bit (and I do mean just no more than $100 each in a casino) just minimum betting here and there for a cocktail and at craps/UTH with @annbrown57...and we still ended up losing $2000...
I think like $1000 was today ($300 at UTH at Aliante, then $300 at video poker at Aliante; then $400 here at Palace Station $200 at UTH, then $200 showing @annbrown57 how to play dice)
We’re getting dinner at El Burro Burracho...the ORIGINAL plans were for El Dorado Cantina...but we didn’t realize until we got there...that’s the restaraunt inside Sapphire, HAHAHAHA

I want to thank Tim & his wife for a fun day venturing out to the north side of Vegas! We had a great picnic at Road Kill Grille (its BBQ - beef, pork, chicken) until the bee decided it wanted to snack on our food:mad:. Luckily we were pretty full by then.

We then when on the Alliante which is a very pretty casino. The hydraulics in the first chair sunk all the way to the floor so I scooted over next to Tim's machine and got

Thank you both for taking me along! Coming back the sun was just hitting the mountains for a very pretty view.

Have a safe trip home and hope to see you again, maybe in Kansas City!

Agreed..... I've never gone to Vegas without renting a car, as we love to visit the off strip casinos/resorts.. I use my Am Ex points with Hertz these days. Nice car at a fair price.

TIM, great trip report...enjoyed it from beginning to end. Thanks for sharing your experiences...insightful to say the least.

A young couple losing 100K to these damn casinos? Are the nice rooms, fancy meals and the limo rides to and from the airport really worth it? That's silly in my opinion. How can losing so much money be fun, even if you can afford to lose that type of money, which I find hard to believe. Just saying!!

I guess the same way an alcoholic likes to still drink.
It’s not really fun, but like they say, playing and LOSING triggers just about the same feeling as playing and WINNING,

This comment reminds me of a study i read a few years back about the psychology of gambling. It found that gamblers experienced much intense feelings of euphoria if they made a comeback to even from a deep hole than if they just won big in the first place.

    Yes, exactly.
Kind of like a penny earned is better than a penny won?

    Tim,
The following is my two cents. As long as you enjoyed it and can afford it, keep doing it. Some people like to smoke, others like to drink. What is the difference between those hobbies and gambling? I enjoy gambling in the casino and have gone to casino for 30 years. I have a least lost half a mil for the life time. I am still alive and kicking. Other people said why you lost so much, can use this kind of money to do nice trip and buy a lot of nice things. I don't care less to travel around the world. I rather to go to Vegas or local casino to gamble. Good luck with your present trip!

Is a good chunk of this $100K giving back other winnings, thought you hit some big hand pays.

I almost always get a car for at least half a day and drive out to Red Rock park and walk around. It is nice to be outside the city and just relax. The last trip I got an SUV, opened the back up and sat in there reading a book for a couple hours. It wasn't that I was losing a lot on the trip, I just like the time out in the desert to clear my head. It was also about 105 on the strip and out at the park was 20 degrees cooler.

    Not in four years.
I’ll definitely say it’s more than $50k; but maybe less than $100k
