I was laid off back in 2008 during the big financial meltdown> worked in Technology and had various technical an management jobs for the largest financial company int the US. I did do jobs searches for a while my resume gave away my age and I didn't care for any of the positions and decided to retired.
I belong to LinkedIn and I still get regular emails with various jobs. Today I got this one and I had to laugh and wonder why anyone would apply for this job. Here it is:
    Execution Management - Executive Director

You know how it is. Without proper management those executions will always be behind and subject to cost overruns and of shoddy quality!

It varies an enormous amount from company to company. At law firms, there's pretty much "Associate" or "Partner" (maybe "Senior Associate" or "Counsel" in between). But in other industries it's very different. For example, in finance, a "VP" is meaningless, those are handed out like candy. In others, it's a pretty high-level title. And I was once in a job where my on-paper title wasn't as high as how I was coded in the management system and didn't reflect the fairly-high level of authority I had. I can't speak to MS, but at JPMC, "Executive Director" was basically the second-highest title, just behind "Managing Director" (there were some above that, but then you're in C-suite territory).

Bottom line, I wouldn't get hung up on titles these days.

This thread reminds me of the greatest football coach quote of all time.

Tampa Bay Buccaneer's coach John McKay was asked by reporters about the Bucs' execution after another loss, he replied "I'm in favor of it".

I think after being forced into retirement, that becoming manager of Executions at a corporation would be a perfect fit for you. Perhaps you can have them change the title to 'High Executioner'.

Humans like to change things. They imagine themselves contributing.

So personnel became Human Resources, became Talent management, then team development.

Customer service became guest relations. Salesperson became Brand Ambassador. Stock boy then warehouse associate; there's now an ad in this area for a heavy lifter.

When in doubt, call 'em a team member. Eventually, that will morph to "would-you-like-fries-with-that?" specialist.

I wonder how many people make a living coming up with new job titles. And perpetuating the need to keep changing them.

If you want to kill an hour or so, surf to one of the online Dictionary of Occupational Titles and browse a while. Any reference library will have very complete hardcopy editions.

I work at a university. My title in the HR system is NOT my "real" title. Or vice versa. And I'm far from the only one that happens with (for non-faculty jobs, this is common - units want to give their own titles but university bureaucracy says you only have these X number of job titles/families/levels you can use, etc) And it really is fun to look at the spreadsheet with the titles & levels to see how much or little the descriptors mean.....

I have seen a few threads here about who the person was I just spoke with or replied to my email, etc. it involved the numerous “titles” rather than merely “host”. Assistant director for player development—downtown property for slots.....:)
I just want to see how big the name tag is.

About once a year my job title changes. It almost always includes some trendy buzzword. Once the allure wears off they change it again. Over the years my department has gone from Transportation - Deliveries - Routing - Scheduling to now Logistics.

And then there is the oft-used tactic of giving an employee a “special” title in lieu of a well-deserved promotion or pay raise.

I have three different titles, and none of them mean much to me. I work with a few people whom are fixated on titles, and needless to say, they're not people I enjoy working with, unsurprisingly.

That's absolutely how mine started a few years ago. But last year (well, 2019 I guess) I made them change my job title (specific university bureaucracy issue around streamlining job titles to enhance equity) and they couldn't say no (well, HR tried but my boss was supportive). They put me into the "title picker" (some sort of algorithm that looks at my job duties and my experience) and then they had to give me a raise ;-) But hey - equity ;-) And honestly, I didn't ask for a raise at all - I wanted the appropriate job family for the jobs I do. Certainly didn't complain about it though! Esp since 2020 (and probably 2021 and who knows how much longer) we didn't get cost of living/merit increases....

My current job title is Regional Manager. I don't work for a paper company.

At the risk of being crass, I do think this is an aspirational job title:

Trendy buzzword -- that is basically what it boils down to.
