My son and I are going to be staying along the Vegas strip in October. He plays 2-5 no limit. I play limit poker. Often it is hard to find a place where both of us could play. I'm thinking that taking a cab to Southpoint might be a good idea. I've never been there, but friends have liked it. It has good VP as well, if I want variety from the limit table. And it seems to have pretty good food, including the rare inexpensive buffet. What do you think?

Southpoint . . . .where if you are a winner, you can't get comped, but lose all you want . . . . they LOVE losers.

You'll love it, Dewey. The 2-4 is a friendly, loose game similar to the Nugget and the opposite of Boulder or the Orleans. The 2-5 game can vary. I have seen play that is so bad it's baffling and games that are tougher than anywhere else.

I am reading that it is a 3-6 game and a 3-5, which is fine. Your evaluation of the poker games is very helpful.
I'm also thinking of booking for a few nights solo at the end of my trip and using the airport shuttle:
Can comps from the poker room be used against the hotel bill?
Also, curious if the Oyster Bar is open.
Having not been there, I'll have a million questions, so perhaps I'll start a thread on the hotel forum.
It just seems like one of the few places where both the kid and I can play our different games, and perhaps enjoy a meal. While he is there, we stay at his timeshare, Marriot Chateau I think. That will be change for me.

I love South Point. Big casino. Half decent VP the last time I was there and good food options. Rooms are the Orleans/Suncoast floorplan. Prices crept up though as they got busier and passed the point that I considered them a value. In Yogi's words, "Nobody goes there anymore, it's too busy!"

Everything I know is pre pandemic, so apologies if my info is wrong. Book the shuttle in advance. You don't want to be that guy stranded because you were too lazy to make a quick call or ask at check in.

I have used poker room comps for my room but it was years ago. Poker room comps also don't vanish like Station,MGM, Caesars properties.

Oyster Bar has a great Manhattan clam chowder.

3-6 and 3-5 are new since I have been there last. The room also had a ton of promos so check what is happening before you sit down. Mucking a high hand sucks.

I like oysters sautéed in their juices with only light spices. I don't see that the oyster bar does that. I don't eat raw, and while I can enjoy oysters Rockefeller, it always seems to me like they are hiding the taste of the oyster with all that other goop.
They have them at Charlie's in Crystal River, Florida where I winter, but they are not on the menu. I always have to check that the chef will do them for me, but the answer has always been yes. And I can make them at home, of course. However you'd think an "oyster" bar would actually have a variety of oyster dishes.
    And maybe they do.
I'm sure I'll get enough to eat at South Point. I'd be curious if anyone remembers the choices at the buffet. Can I make a salad? Buffets are good for me because I can skirt foods off my diet. In Vegas I am off diet often, so finding a place on diet really helps balance things out, as does food in the room.

The Oyster bar is open - we ate there on May 3. We split an order of Cioppino - it was very good with the exception that the calamari was slightly overdone.

We both played in one of their daily $60 poker tourny's - enjoyed the tourny, but we both got booted (separate tables) with high pocket pairs on river cards.

The VP is good - lots of progressive games in the $1,600 to $2,100 jackpot range earlier this week. Also as info, you can almost always find a $10 table at BJ or Craps.

Zeke, Thanks for the good information. Very helpful. I'm actually going to be there for five nights in November. They told me there is a room poker rate. I play four hours and get the brush to certify it and I get a room rate reduction for that day. No tournament play counts but the 3=6 limit games count. I'll be there by myself, so I can't imagine not doing four hours or finding that hard unless the table is really tight and the pots won't overcome the rake.
My son is pleased as well. So, I'll be there some of the time he is staying with me. Great kid. I catch a flight from Albany to Chicago and stay a night with him in Chicago. He booked first class seats on the next day, for both of us from Chicago, to Vegas, and paid my way too.
Funny you should mention calamari as I just had some at a little Greek place herein Florida.

If you get tired of cards, the movie theater at South Point has Mondays as Senior Day, with tickets $4 or $5.

However for a limited time, all tickets are $3. Not sure how long that will be, though. upload_2021-5-5_20-31-26.png
