    My Trip Report

"I found the smell at the Plaza!â€

Upfront my apologizes for this report not being a literary masterpiece. I tried to write a bemusing account of our trip to the Mecca but just couldn’t pull it off so it’s broken down into categories and not very funny.

Flights- Outbound, United, PWM –O Hare- Denver-LAS. Left ½ hr late due to fog but arrived on time.
Return, US Air, LAS-Baltimore-LaGuardia-PWM. Left 45 min late due to US Air forgetting where they parked the plane arrived on time. Can coach seats get any smaller? Expedia deal $204 pp RT.

Hotels- Stayed with friends Sat and Sun at their home in N. Las Vegas, beautiful home, nice neighborhood, and their children area adorable, well behaved and a joy to be around, ages 4-9. Placed some football parlay bets at Santa Fe Station, sports book was awesome, seemed like a real nice place. I liked the layout.

Sunday checked in at the Plaza, room 821, North tower, and view of Main Street Station. Deluxe room, king bed, N/S. Bed was like sleeping on a sheet of plywood. Bathroom/ sink area is smaller than my ½ bath at home. There was an odd smell. A/C very noisy. TV small and old. As much as I thought the room sucked, the staff was friendly, helpful and courteous. I would consider staying here again because of the staff. Talked to Host Doug before leaving and got a late check out and ½ off my room.
The smell is still at the Plaza, I found the source. The bar next to the sports book is where it starts. My God, I think it is rotting garbage. Our last day there I think someone peed their pants and sat at various games.
The sportsbook at the Plaza is great. Plenty of room, comfy seats, big screens, projection TVs, great horse bettor’s area, friendly people. Cocktails service can be sparse. This is the only area in the casino I had trouble getting a drink; everywhere else was fast and often.
The Sports Dome-awesome. Fantastic place to watch the games. It’s like a sports junkies dream living room with a view of the Freemont St experience.

Main Street Station- Played VP at the Boars Head bar, great microbrews, nice bartenders. Not much luck at VP. Good selection of 9/6 to be found.

Silverton- I loved this place. Awesome selection of VP and low table limits. Everyone was very friendly. A locals joint. Way out of the way though, if I was to stay here I’d rent a car. Bass Pro Shop was very cool. Mermaid in the aquarium was startling to say the least.
Shady Grove Lounge- Fantastic, Desiree is an awesome bartender. Very comfy seats. Tasty microbrews and 2 lanes of duck pins bowling in an old fashioned dining like train car. Watched the Sox and BC at the same time while playing VP and dinking for free. Does life get any better? I am really considering this place next trip.

Golden Nugget- WOW the pool, might stay here just because of the pool and yes the slide does go through the shark tank that is in the pool! Sports book is over hyper and small the Plaza’s was better.

Planet Hollywood- I like the décor and the layout, but dirty, no one was cleaning up. Leftovers everywhere. Restrooms were filthy; Sports book is OK but only 2 betting windows. Machines were tight.

Food- Plaza-777 Buffet- had 2 comped breakfasts, BLAH, glad it was comped, wouldn’t pay $2 for it.
Snack bar- ICK, go across the street to the Golden Gate.

MSS Buffet- Breakfast and Dinner, good but not great, but got one comped dinner. I remember this as being better.

Fremont Buffet- Seafood night, very good, great service, worth the price.

Paris lunch Buffet- Good, but I was hung over so it may have affected my opinion. Price for what you get is fair. The crepes still rock.

In & Out Burger- Wife’s first time, good, not great but good.

NY Pizza & Pasta-North LV- take out. Fair to OK. I wasn’t impressed.

Golden Nugget Buffet- Breakfast and Dinner. Awesome, best we had. Worth every penny, especially breakfast. A view of the pool.

Golden Gate deli- Shrimp Cocktail, HELL YEAH!!, love ‘em. Wife had a North Shore sandwich-great!

Silverton coffee shop- It was late, we were tired. It was OK. We should have ordered from the Shady Grove, their food looked better.

Transportation- Cabs are very expensive. The bus is very slow, but do take the Deuce at night. Go to the upper level sit in front, a great way to see the Strip. Our Bell Captain at the Plaza got us a last minute shuttle to the airport, thanks Juan, price OK, driver fantastic, the stories were priceless.
I think I’ll rent a car next time. Too much hassle finding a ride especially late at night/early morning.

Gaming- Lots of VP this trip. I hit four Aces w/ the 4 for $1000 at the Plaza. Won $200 one night at craps (Plaza). Won $300 in a ½ hr at the Silverton. The Plaza was great for VP. 9/6, 10/7, even saw some 10/8. Plaza crushed me at BJ, not bad rules, just a bad run. Plenty of $5 tables. No 6:5 at the Plaza!! Silverton played great also. Actually got the wife to play some BJ and even PaiGow, something she never does. MSS VP crushed me, good pay tables, just wasn’t my day. Wife played all day, even. She took ‘em for a lotta beers though! Planet Hollywood-TIGHT, ‘nuff said.

Won some sport bets, lost some. Way to go Red Sox!!!!. Couldn’t pick a horse winner to save my life.

Entertainment- UNLV vs. Colorado St. football- Wind really put a damper on this event. 50-55 mph winds dust and debris everywhere and UNLV played like shit. Wife -$15.
Steve Wyrick- Free tix courtesy of the Clark County F.D. Thanks Kevin! Front row center. Amazing, Awesome, Loved it!!! Wife got called on stage to check his shackles. If you haven’t seen this magician/illusionist, IT IS A MUST SEE.

Until next time, I live through your trip reports.

Very nice read. The more trip reports I read the more things I find I haven't done.

I hope you do get to stay at Silverton sometime. Besides having good VP, the staff is great, the beds are SSOOOOOO comfortable, and the pool area is never crowded. I have read that they are planning a large expansion (hotel, casino, bigger outdoor concert area, and more pools.) I kind of wish they'd leave it alone.....if it gets really popular, it won't be the same.

Thanks for the report. You had some VP luck, that's always good.

My first two nights in a couple of weeks will be at the Plaza. I hope the stink is gone by then...we didn't notice it this past June when we were there.
