Table Games How To Tip Your Dealer

I had a discussion with someone last week that said he caught some flack from craps dealers for betting for them, that they preferred you just give them the toke instead of risking it on a bet for them. This made me question what I've done for years which was to place a pass line bet beside mine for them. Have things changed? Should I just start asking what they prefer when I play? After I started doing it I never gave it anymore thought.

never had a dealer say that to me. That would be the last one they got from me.

In December I had a funny experience at OYO where the roulette dealer was very active with tip bets. His manager was OK with it as well. He did pretty well. He had a whole story about how low paid they are and how this pays for his rent.

I'd call the manager and chastise him for not paying the dealer enough. Then offer to bet for the dealer every spin if the casino matched the amount.

I wouldn't enjoy that. I'll tip if/when I want to tip and don't really need/want to be lightly cajoled into it.

I agree. But OYO is an acquired taste. I like it. Most do not.

Looking for high rollers feedback:

If you won $30k in one session at a BJ Table, what would you say the range of tip you might give?

I typically bet for the dealer throughout a winning session so hard to gauge for me. I would say it ends up being about 10% based on win/loss statements and what I jot down as my winnings from a session. Had a hand from my trip at Beau Rivage earlier this month where I had a $4k bet, had to double down, and told the dealer I'd tip her $1k if she busted. She did and I tossed a yellow to her. I will also add something at the end of a session if it was really good and I have random chips after coloring up.

How long have you been playing? How was the session? Was the dealer(s) good and made you feel like you were taken care of?
These are all factors for me

I walked up to a roulette table and bet ~$12k on a single spin and walked away with $36k. About +$24k from one spin
I dropped a $500 chip for the dealer and walked away
I think that is more than fair for having spun the ball one time for me and pushing a stack of chips

But I went back to the craps table that I had been playing at for hours and dropped $200-$300 more for the dealers there
I had already tipped the craps dealers as I colored up and I constantly bets for the dealers as I play so I don't even have an accurate count of how much I tip
But the craps dealers did a lot more work during my session and they were mostly good and friendly and try to keep the game going without a hitch
So they got a random bonus tip from my roulette win

Craps question (sorry if this has been asked and answered)

If I put down a $5 bet for the dealers on a number (4,5,6,8,9, or 10) and it hits does the initial bet stay up or does it all come down and I'd have to put the $5 back up again?

Dealers typically take all of the bet and put it in their toke bucket when they win.

I tip throughout my session, and the dealers change frequently, so probably not much more at the end.

This is property dependent and table/dealer dependent

If you want it to stay up, specify "player controlled" when you put the bet up
Otherwise dealers will often take your bet and the win and drop them together

If the dealers are gamblers, they may press it

Some properties do not allow dealers to press their tip bets so they have to drop everything

One way to tip with full control is ... Just tip out of your own bet and win
Throw them the money they would have won after you collect

Some dealers prefer to take the toke, others don't mind playing it, especially if you're only betting a dollar for them. I usually just show them the chip I'm betting and ask.

I used to play line bets with odds for dealers per the books. But I very rarely play full odds, so I started putting the toke off-center on top of my odds. This way, if it hits, they'll get the full payout. If I have a passline and come bets, I'll ask the dealer if they want to be on the odds for the six or ten. It's interesting which dealers will take the 6-5 and which take the 2-1.

i typically bet for the dealer on my hand , maybe $25 to $100 per $5k. If i hit a big split/double or have a kick ass session, i may throw another $100 or so on top of the thousand or two already in the till. I like to bet during the session so no matter what, someone besides Mr. Casino wins!

My favorite is when the dealers go off and on with me with my come bets/odds I put up for them. But agree, completely depends on the property and crew.

Apologies for what is probably a stupid question but when placing a bet for the dealer, do you still have to stick to the table minimums? For example if I'm playing $15 minimum BJ and I'm betting $15 and wanted to add a bet on for the dealer, would it have to be an additional $15 or could I just bet $5 for them?

I'm mainly a slots player and whenever I do play table games I've tended to just tip the dealer at the end of the session. I'd like to change that and start tipping them with bets throughout the session, mainly so that they're not thinking I'm a cheap **** for the entirety of the session before I finally tip them. My play is typically going to be in the $15-25 per hand range. What would be an acceptable tip/bet size to place for the dealer and how often? I was thinking maybe $5, 2 to 3 times per hour?

I've never seen a minimum enforced on a dealer bet, though your mileage may vary.
