Listing all of the casinos in order, on each side of The Strip, from the South end to the North end is a good indicator that someone knows it well. Knowing which end is South and which end is North might stump some people, too.

I think anybody actually calling himself a Vegas pro is already an amateur in my book.

I wouldn't consider myself a pro and I'm not sure what a Vegas pro would be. I can drive around the city getting in and out of the strip casinos relatively easy avoiding the strip. Our rooms are comp'd as is food. We've evolved from staying on the strip to Downtown and off strip casinos. We're low rollers playing VP and Pai Gow. I'm happy with the general knowledge of the town, understanding there is so much more to learn. Every trip we look forward to learning a new angle on gaming and getting around town. I would consider ourselves more of a Vegas fan.

Our running thing at work is that if I know 10% more than you about a subject, as far as you know, I know everything.

    Hmmm...my thoughts -

    1. Know what cab fares are (or should be!) to most strip areas and downtown...as well as between downtown & general strip areas.

    2. Know the easiest way to secure room comps and where.

    3. Know the best places to play blackjack.

    4. Understand, roughly, the house edge for every popular game.

    5. Ability to recognize the difference between a girl genuinely flirting with you and a 'vegas pro' hard at work.

    6. Understand and practice good money (bankroll) management.

    7. Possess some level of good old-fashioned "street-smarts".

    8. Understand all of the differences between "the Plaza" and "the Palazzo".

    9. Be familiar with all (or most) of the "first-timer" sights that are "must-see" so that when asked, you know how to answer.

    10. Be knowledgeable enough about the monorail system that you can answer any questions about it and swear that you'll never use it again.

Now - I don't think these things necessarily make somebody a "vegas pro", but those are qualities that fit me... and those who know me personally would probably consider me an expert on Vegas (even though I know that there is plenty that I don't know!)

I think a "Vegas Pro" is at different levels, depending how you usually roll in Vegas.

    It's a good thread idea.
Vegas Pro to me means someone that is well versed in the the ways of Vegas. How to maximize your entertainment dollars.
Top Cards list was pretty good.

I laugh about how a group of friends perceived me once. It was about the 5th casino we were in, when for the 5th time, somebody asked where the bathroom was. I directed them to the closest bathroom all five times. "Dang, you really ARE a Vegas expert!" lol

I'm with ken2v. A Vegas expert, to me, is someone who has impressed me with their knowledge of the city. There are quite a few who fit that description here on VMB. As for lists, I do far better on Topcard's list than Mango's.

To be fair I didn't give much thought to my list but rather composed a few "tips and tricks" in the form of jeopardy style answers. Maybe re-phrased it would be "This is what you need to know for Vegas 2.0" (one step above very basic knowledge - like knowing that most cabs get paid around $30-$40 to drop you off at strip clubs, more so for scammy Rub'N'Tugs) etc.

Hey it's the internet everyone's an expert. :evillaugh In all seriousness though like in many aspects of life it depends on what kind of expert you are talking about. Some people are experts at the low rolling lifestyle while others are expert at the High Roller, some at dining some at the club life damn few could be considered an expert at every aspect of Vegas.

I am enough of a Vegas Pro to know that your questions do not define a "Vegas Pro".

To be frank, it doesn't matter to me in the least what a cab driver gets for dropping a passenger at a strip club. I know that cabbies get incentives to recommend all kinds of places, so I know enough to know where I'm going before I get in a cab. But, I really only use cabs in Vegas when I drink too much (or enough, depending on how you look at it).

Your questions hit a very narrow demographic.

Look, I have or had certain expertise in things like Vegas golf, Vegas weddings, Vegas food, and when we were hauling our asses up there way too often, Vegas a lot of other stuff. But I never could've told you word one about a bus or along atom's lines much about cabs or really all that much about the minutiae of buffet v buffet or strip clubs or ultralounges or high-roller life or how to save three bucks on everything and anything in town -- nor did I care.

Everyone who does something long enough, and if they spent enough time sampling broadly, will become expert at how they do that something, and someone else will be expert in another way.

I don't think that mango meant any type of oneupmanship or better-than-thou with the OQ. But as someone said, it can't be quantified.
