I am pretty paranoid about this stuff -- last year I was staying at the Goldent Nugget. I was in the safe that morning and wasn't sure if I locked the safe (I was literally on the Deuce waiting it to roll away). I jumped out of my seat, high-tailed it to my room. Luckily the safe was locked (I did lock it). So - I just had to wait for another bus (no biggie - I was attending a tradeshow). It always reminds me now to double-check that stuff BEFORE leaving the room for the day.

The same thing happened to me about twenty years ago, I was at a party and met a beautiful girl, but she slipped a mickey into my beer. The next thing I knew, I woke up in a bathtub filled with ice and one of my kidneys was missing.

leave money, credit cards in safety deposit box

Always leave money, credit cards, passports etc. in the hotels safety deposit box, totally safe and insured. Money or anything else left in the in-room safe is not insured and the hotels liability is whatever they feel fit to give.

Do hotels charge for their safety deposit boxes?
Are you able to access them 24 hours a day?
Does every hotel have different rules regarding this stuff?
It sounds like a huge hassle.....

No hotels do not charge to use them, The hotels I have stayed at you can access them anytime. I am not sure about different rules for various hotels. I normally stay in MGM properties and have used them at MGM Grand. Aria, Mandalay Bay & New York/ New York with no problems. I do also use the in room safe for laptop etc.. and have never been broken into in all the years I have been going to Vegas. Good luck

Back when my engagement ring still fit me (I've gained weight), I used to use the hotel deposit box all the time.

If it was a maintenance worker then that pretty much eliminates all of the CET Properties.

You left the maid a very large tip for not stealing your stuff?

Burglarizing a hotel room is a crime of opportunity. Like you said, the crook wants to be "in and out". The crook is not going to hang around any longer than he has to. He is not going to hang around and let someone walk in on him. I even doubt that a thief would take the time to write down the CC numbers. Why not just grab the cards and go somewhere, write the numbers down and then discard the CC's?
Many of these stories about rooms being burglarized just defy logic. People are too paranoid.

It would be very unlikely to be the same maid anyway.

I'm going to add to this thread:
I was in AC this pat week at Revel, had two friends staying at Ballys. They came to hang with me and upon getting back to Ballys went to unlock the safe to get some cash, only a coulple hundred left in there. The safe was locked, the pin opened the safe. However the cash was gone. Ballys had a whole system with paperwork and police reports at the ready, must happen all day long.

Sounds like one of the room occupants had a bad run, came back for more cash...and now wont admit it.

Other posts have talked about how a thief would get in and get out fast. Then someone shares this and it had to be one of the people in the room stole the money, it couldn't be a thief. :bang:

These guys have money and are good friends. I highly doubt one would rob the other for 220 bucks and waste two hours of vacation filling out forms with Ballys security. I have locked myself out of hotel room safes In the past. They send up a maintenance worker who has a reset code. The new ones are a little more advanced and it takes more to time to open, there is also a computer forensic trail. I locked myself out of a safe in st Regis Puerto Rico, it took over an hour and some crazy devices to electronically reopen my safe.

In casino hotels, I Never use room safe. Cash in cage or front desk deposit boxes. However, nothing is ever safe anywhere.

Much more believable story than the OP. Like you did we have accidentally forgotten to lock the safe back, staying at TheHotel and discovered that at Cosmo after having ben gone several hours. We got back to the same scenario as you, room cleaned no maid in sight, nothing had been disturbed aside from the fact the maid had actually closed the door on the safe that DW had left open.

It's better to steal a cc number and security code on the back than the card. If I don't steal the card, I can use it at any time on the internet. If I take the actual card, I have to immediately run as much as possible on it.

It makes more sense for a thief to just steal the CC number and leave the credit card in place. If the card is gone the owner will call it in stolen and the number is useless. There is a real black market for stolen CC numbers. Though the thief calling someone from the room to give them the numbers doesn't make sense, better to just write it down or snap a quick pic.

As far as hotel safes go I'm surprised some people are so doubtful they could be easily broken in to. You can watch a hundred videos online on breaking into those things. For an insider even easier, I've had security come to my room to open a safe and it takes them less than a minute. They just plug in some handheld device and reset it.

It doesn't stop me from using those safes all the time, but am just saying it doesn't take a master thief to break into one of those things.

Feels like we've already beaten this topic to a pulp. If the OP wants to add more info, I can unlock it, but for now it's time to close it down.
