On my second trip to Vegas when I first turned 21, tempted by 2 free nights at the Stratosphere , I drove down from Northern California and got in around early evening. Lost my entire bankroll (which was probably 2 or 3 hundred) within 12 hours, and spent the next 12 walking up and down the strip, taking the elevator up to the hotel rooms at just about every hotel, and snagging a set of shampoo/conditioner/lotion bottles from every housekeeping cart I could find. Kind of became a sport for the day.

Some I grabbed from the cart while housekeeping was in the room cleaning; others I asked for. One hotel wouldn't let me up without a room key (this was clearly back before every hotel checked for room keys), so I had to call from the lobby with a story that I had already checked out but wanted to get a set to take home with me--housekeeping brought a set down for me, and I didn't even have any money to tip!

It was cool though, because it was also when hotels had different designs for their toiletries. I remember Luxor had pyramid-shaped ones, and Caesars had bottles shaped like pillars. Walked my ass off, passed the whole day for free (except for a slice of pizza at Sbarro for lunch), and went home without having to buy shampoo for months!

Ugh, that is definitely me sometimes. If my partner is with me, I know I'm probably chasing too hard when I place a large bet and hear her laughingly say, "Ok, crazy man."

Yes the level of income + bet size, make for degen. if you are done to your $20 in the world and homeless and you bet that $20 you are pretty degen, but if bill gates played casino war for $5000 a hand it wouldnt be that bad if he loss a million.
Anyhow, for me probably Ballys AC 2011. student at the time but working some, thought i had a system on slots I was going to play really big and get a huge jackpot, played $25 a spin slots, lost all my bankroll i brought with me. Then watched a guy hit for thousands on a $100 slot. So i take out 5k on my CC, the kid at the cage says maybe this isnt good idea, I say naw watch ill be back soon to cash out. Well i was back soon, but only to get denies my cc over limit. The machine ate up 5k like a Hoover vaccuum 20 minutes tops! took a while to pay that back

$100 a spin, about 10 per minute, it can go really quick! My best hit only for $1000 a couple times then lost it all!
But few years later at Empire City i try $100 big boy slots again. 3rd spin, double bar double bar, triple ding ding ding! 6k!

Guy I work with. He isn’t rich and I’m not sure how he swings it but he has 2 - 50k lines (Bellagio - Venetian)

We arrived Friday night and he blew both of them by dinner on Saturday. He someone got another 10k on Sunday and ran it up to 150k missing our flight home and missing work on Monday.

Mine was one I posted about before. Horseshoe SI had an oil fryer giveaway if you earned 200 RC. I played craps and someone hit 5 points on the fire bet. I was +$750 in 45 minutes but didn't have enough RC. Instead doing what any halfway intelligent human would have done (cashed out and bought an oil fryer at Walmart on the way home), I got greedy. Then I hit a cold run. Then I started chasing losses. Ended up losing $1500 on the day... but got those PRECIOUS credits for the fryer. Then I got to the desk to get it, and they had already run out, so I ended up losing $1500 and ended up with a cheap coffee maker that they had leftover from a previous promotion.

Worst I'd seen from someone else was an older guy who bought in for $3000 at the craps table. That went pretty quick. He went on to take out 3 markers for $5000/each, most of which was swinging for the fences betting against a hot shooter who made 6 points. Wasn't at the table an hour. He tried to play it off, as though it didn't bother him, but you could hear it in his voice and see it in his body language. That guy took a beating he wasn't prepared to take.

The very first thing that came to my mind upon reading that was this scene from the show Gilmore Girls. Lorelai's love for coffee... now THAT is degeneracy :)

Oh for sure. That distinction exists with many other labels, such as "alcoholic". Friends at a bar might load up on drinks one night and joke between each other "what an alcoholic!"... when true alcoholism is a very depressing and serious condition that is nothing to joke about.

I think that our use of the word "degenerate" here is something that is said based on the idea that you have to be serious enough about gambling to even be on a message board dedicated to Las Vegas... let alone going to Las Vegas on a regular basis and knowing the games right down to the hold percentages of video poker paytables. To the average person, that looks like an unhealthy obsession... but the truth is, we all seem to have it under control to the point that it's a manageable hobby.

    Most degen

I lost my whole BR before even leaving the airport. It was maybe my third trip to Vegas, and I was 23 years old. My buddies flight was delayed and I had a few hours to kill. After loosing a few bucks, I just KNEW those slots were due, I guess they weren't.

Not so much degeneracy on gambling, but degeneracy on not wanting to be DISTRACTED when gambling.

I have a few hotels I love, but the drink service is SOOOOOOO slow, and I hate having to constantly eagle-eye the elusive waitress, because if you miss (and the tiny glass), her it'll be another hour. I just want to relax and play! (Yes Aria....)

So, I now bring my own drinks to Vegas when I stay at places that are slower. Mixers, cocktails, and i put the drink in a tumbler filled with ice. I still order diet soda/juice from the waitress so that she gets tips for each round...but I flat got tired of playing "Where's Waldo" with the waitress.

In my book, especially since you get free drinks in Vegas, it's a little degenerate to bring your own just so that you don't have to take time away from your game to hunt for a waitress....or stay on a machine because "drink service is coming"...etc.

One good thing about you system is that you can avoid the really expensive "free drinks" waiting for the cocktail waitress.

My brother is a real degenerate lowlife. Years ago when we lived in North Jersey he would take bus trips to AC. One morning he calls me after gambling all night asking to western union him money for a bus ticket home, since the return bus he went on didn’t depart until late afternoon. Since we lived close to a Western Union, I walked over, sent him the money, then he calls me back in 20 minutes to say he fucked up and lost the money, and to send him more. I simply hung up on him. That was the first of many degenerate things he’s done. I could write a book. Because of gambling he’s been in indentured servitude or almost a decade now.

But if he can afford it, that’s his entertainment/hobby. Now if he’s neglecting bill etc, then yes he’s a true degenerate.

Done: Chasing. Three different times early in my Vegas history, having a bad $10 craps session and chasing by putting $100 on the line, every time I did it, I got a 6 or 8, and put out $500 in odds. Won 2 of 3, with the losing one being the last time I've done it.

Done: Also early in my history, and not as bad as chasing because it was really more of an experiment - martingaling on bacc starting at $100. Lost 5 straight hands, so $3,100. Which was really my entire trip bankroll back in those days. Also the first and last time I ever martingaled.

Seen: Chasing. See it (or think I'm seeing it) reasonably often at bacc. If I play a long enough session, and there's a bad shoe, everybody losing hand after hand, seems like someone always eventually tilts and shoves in a huge stack (like 20x their normal bet) on a single hand. But I don't really know for sure if they're chasing.

And yeah, I agree, taking wild shots or chasing isn't really degen, degen is playing with money you can't afford to lose. We use the term loosely here.

My first trip to Vegas I went bust in about 20 minutes playing craps at the Mirage. Go to the ATM, blow that in blackjack, quickly. Next day my brother stakes me in a poker tournament, finish 3rd and cash $500. I at least got some mileage out of that $500, but busted. Next day I get staked in a 1/3NL cash game and leave up $300. Went and lost 13 hands of blackjack in a row before I decide it just wasn't going to be a winning trip, haha.

Degen behavior for sure but I honestly think I was just drunk on being in Vegas for the first time and had no idea on the relation of bet size vs. bankroll. Oh well, that was the trip that sowed the seeds.

My mom and I playing BJ with a guy at Flamingo. I think the minimum was $15 but he was playing the table max in several positions. The guy had to hit the cage 4 times in a single hand to get more money because he had split 5 times with 8s and had several 10/11s to double. The hand took about 45 minutes to finish. The guy was actually really nice and asked us if it was ok if he went to get more money. Considering he was playing more in a single hand than I have in my entire life he was welcome to do whatever he wanted. He would also throw out some money on the sucker bets for us for no reason at all. One of them hit for $100 and he had me give $50 to the dealer for a tip. What a night that was. I would've stayed playing all night with him if I could have but it was already 2am and I had a 7am flight.
