Tried it Wednesday June 10th at 1:30pm at the Carson Street lobby. Young Italian looking guy checked us in and when I tried the $20 trick he explained he could not accept tips. BOOOOO! He did, however, then talk us into an upgrade that netted out to $10 difference per night which landed us on the 16th floor of the Gold Tower, no resort fees, unlimited water and keurig coffee in our room, and wifi of course....so while the "free" upgrade didn't work, our effort with the $20 trick did land us a better room at just $10 more per night. We looked at that as a win.

Did you happen to take any pics of your Gold Club Room? Will be there in August. Have stayed in Carson Tower, Gold Tower (regular room) and most recently, the Rush Tower. I truly love the Rush Tower, but opted to book Gold Club room in order to "remove" that silly resort fee. Also, however, I know my wife is planning to spend a good majority of the time in the Spa (wet areas included). Understand that the Gold Club and Rush Club rooms are very similar, but for a change in the bathroom design (something I really appreciate in the Rush Tower.)

We just stayed at the Golden Nugget, December 6th - December 10th. This is the first time out of maybe ten times we've stayed there that I did the "$20 trick." It got us a room on the 21st floor (one from the top) of the Carson Tower with a north-facing view, an extra set of coupons (best being the two for BOGO breakfast or lunch buffets), and a VIP pass to go to the front of any restaurant or buffet line. That came in handy one morning when there was a really long line for the buffet.

Background - we were checking in Sunday afternoon and the line was somewhat long. They had a woman working the line to direct people over to the Rush Tower for faster check-in, make sure people were in the right line, and try to keep people happy while waiting. In maybe 20 minutes we were next in line, but she says "Follow me" and takes us to the VIP check in (the room on the other side of the lobby). A young man helps us there, and informs us that he's checked us in as a courtesy, but for any follow up we should go to the main desk (very snooty). I said that we'd been brought to the VIP check in by the woman outside who was overseeing everything. He got a bit embarrassed and apologized, and we were off to our room.

The room was on the eighth floor of the Carson Tower with a view consisting of a concrete wall about ten feet away. That would have been OK for a night, but not for four, so we went down to ask for something that didn't look out onto a nearby concrete wall. He then gave us a room on the third floor (lowest level) all the way at the end of the hall overlooking the street bordering the GN to the south, with the jail and parking garage right across the street. May sound picky, but I'm a light sleeper and this was not only a very inconvenient location but a very loud room as well.

So back down we went, but this time I wasn't going to go to the same guy. Got back in the general check in line, and the woman tells me to go to the Rush Tower where there's no wait. I slipped a $20 bill into the key folder, handed it to the guy, explained that this was our third attempt to get a decent room for our four nights and asked if he could help. He opened the folder, saw the $20, paused a moment, slipped it into a drawer, and said he'd see what he could do. We were very satisfied with the result.

We booked the Carson Tower. We went to the Rush Tower to check in. We tried the $20.00 dollar sandwich in between I.D. and creditcard and Landrys for good measure and asked for a complimentary upgrade. The lady said she could put us in a Jr. Suite for an additional $60. A night plus another $22
00 in resort fees. I didn't wish to spend another 82.00 + tax per day so I
Asked if they had any other upgrades and she put us in the Gold tower for $44.00 extra a nite. She kept my 20.00 sandwich on top of me paying out of pocket for my upgrade. I asked her ror my coupon book that your suppose to get when you check in and she seemed to not think we qualified for that but in the end we were able to get it.

I should have ate my $20.00 sandwich. I could have gotten the same result and been 20 ahead. I got no special favors....

Nobody I know has ever gotten any success at the Nugget, and we've been staying there for a few years now.

That said, we all stay for 7-21 days, so it's not like throwing the clerk $20 for 2 nights etc.

Ditto. I've been staying there for years; the last four in a Rush Tower room. When I stayed in the Carson rooms I never had any luck with the $20 trick. From reading these forums the past few years it seems that the GN is pretty tight with the $20 sandwich. Still, it never hurts to politely ask. :peace::beer:

This information is good to know. We have been getting offers for 3 nights and the tower of our choice lately. We have a Laudry's card and have read sometimes it gives you an advantage for room upgrades.

We booked our vacation thru Southwest Vacations so it might have been different had we booked direct thru G.N. We would have gotten what we paid for but I Really didn't want to stay in the Carson Tower. I thought with the $20.00 and the Landry Card we could have gotten upgraded but it was a NO GO. I enjoyed our stay and will stay there for years to come but I know not to throw the $20.00 away and save it for the Crap Tables:{)

The GN is definitely one of those hotels that you want to book directly through them. Their cyber Monday deals are out of this world. Each year I book two trips for the following year, Rush Tower, and I save at least 30% on each booking. Lots of flexibility to cancel up to 48 hrs. prior to check in and you only need to put down first nights stay on your credit/debit card. The front desk, in my experience, at the GN is very professional and they have always worked to accommodate me.

My days of using third party bookers are over. Booking directly with the hotel gives you much more flexibility and it will save a ton of time if you have to call Expedia or Priceline etc. etc. etc. I learned my lesson well. It also seems in my experience that for some reason when I used to book with third parties I would get the absolute worst rooms at any location I booked at.

    check-in GN report

Hubs and I checked into GN last night about 8pm. Tried the $20 trick and we got an upgrade. He didn't accept the $20 either. Went from Carson basic room to Gold Club 17th floor with only increase of total bill $50 for entire 10 days. Very happy with the upgrade. Many extra anemities. D

Very cool. That is a rare coup as the GN is usually pretty tight with that type of thing. Have a great trip.

Stayed there in July 2016. Already had a room in the Rush tower. Tried the $20 trick and the girl returned the money. She said she could lose her job for taking tips. She did give us a nice room that wasn't on the Fremont side so it was quite (though we never made it back before 3am).

WHEN you try the 20 trick do not sandwich your 20 between ur id and credit card instead have ur 20 underneath ur id and credit card and tilt ur 20 so employee sees it then if she cant help u keep ur 20
