Main Street facing rooms aren't so bad, but facing Fremont isn't so bad because of the bands (who goes to bed early anyway?) but the muzak on Fremont St. starts at about 9am and the speakers are very close to the windows.

...a small side note...as a low roller, I get offers for reduced rates from most of the DT properties but the GG is the only one that will comp a room over a weekend...the other free room offers are Sun-Thursday.

On weekends (in my experience) the music stops being very loud at 2-3am. It doesnt turn off completely until 5am however. 7/8am it re-starts.
The back "newer" part of the GG is great. All other rooms are a PASS

The suites are nice...and no noticeable noise issues.
The other rooms? Yeah - they're small, but the bed is very comfortable. Bathroom is minuscule. I would not recommend for two people...solo is probably fine.
The few times I've stayed in 'regular' rooms, I asked for something facing the interior...not Fremont...not Main. Those were 'OK' in terms of noise... the view, however. is of the roof "courtyard" above the casino...still - not horrible... unless you need A/C in February (I did)....you can't get it because the "System" is set to "heat" in February.
I'm not certain when they switch the system over to A/C, but I would definitely ask before I booked a standard room.
The regular rooms are certainly not luxurious...it is, after all, a very old hotel...as in the oldest in Las Vegas.
But on a comp? There's no reason I wouldn't stay there, unless I had another comp available at a nicer hotel downtown.
I certainly wouldn't pay for a room somewhere else when GG was offering me a comped room.

Just got back from Golden Gate. I tried the $20 sandwich for upgrade. Had 4 free nights. Lady handed it back to me. Lol

Well the bed is so comfortable. Room very small. I asked for a room facing Fremont. Lol. It was noisy but fun. They already changed to ac.

    My room only had shower.

I think I am going to call them and, if they don't say anything themselves, ask about the cost to upgrade. Will be a Sunday through Tuesday so am hopeful. Will let everyone know how it goes.

Think you can upgrade to the bigger rooms for $20 a nite.

Just called and booked. Was able to upgrade for what I felt was a reasonable price so I went ahead and did it. Was looking at some other suite options downtown at El Cortez, Four Queens, Downtown Grand and the D and the deal blows any of them out of the water. Very excited to be back downtown again 5 weeks from tonight!
