I always thought it was a one time roll with a higher payout, but thinking back on it that wouldn't really make sense given that you've already got hop bets for that sort of thing.

I've played a LOT of craps, though, and I don't think I've ever seen ANYONE make a single Big 6 or Big 8 bet.

Exactly. If they want to increase their take by offering sucker bets, that's between them and the "suckers." I would much rather they do that and otherwise offer a fair game.

El Cortez offers some kind of side bet thing at their blackjack tables. I don't remember what it is, except that the house edge is terrible. And of course, people play it. And the people who play it seem to have fun playing it, so how are they suckers? Am I having more fun than they are? As long as the ~0.3% house edge is in effect if you play basic strategy, it has no effect on me either way.

My dad always said, if the house is offering it to you a side bet, what you can bet is that it's a bad deal.

The comment about the Big 6 an 8 isn't about whether it is a sucker bet or not. It's about the fact that you can make essentially the same bet by placing the 6 or 8 and get much better EV. The other sucker bets don't have that option or at least don't have it easily. Offering that up is just to deceive the newbies that don't understand the odds and the bets.

They have 'Royal Match'... & sure - I play it from time to time, just for shits & giggles... & yeah - I know full-well that it's a sucker bet...but, as you mentioned - sometimes the fun is in the laughing about it with the friends that you're with!

It's just like the All's. I'll play it every once and a while, but I know it's lost money. But, isn't it all?

Absolutely. And if the house edge is < 0.5% for the main event, they are free to make as much money as they can off of Magic Super Royal Bonus Match Deluxe with Hot Fudge, as far as I'm concerned.

My two favorite sucker-bets in blackjack are Lucky Ladies & the 'Hard-18' bet.
For those who don't know, that hard-18 bet cost you whatever you've bet for your normal blackjack hand...so, if you have $10 bet for the next hand, you can also bet $10 on the 18. How that works is that your 18 bet gives you second hand, which is fixed at hard-18. The hand pays (or loses, or pushes) just the same as if you have an 18.
On very negative counts, this is a pretty good deal as an 'insurance play'.
As for Lucky Ladies? I like that it pays you 4-to-1 on any two-card 20. Bet it on every positive count & you may be surprised at how often it hits.

The big six/big eight is attractive to newbies because the chip movement is like the field bet: you put down your own bet and pick up the win without having to interact with the dealers. I wouldn't hold it against the house for offering it, it probably gets a lot of 'drive-by' bets like the field. I would, however, expect the dealers to try to educate anyone who spends a lot of time betting it.

Field is a "sucker" bet so not sure why you're moaning about the Big 6-8?

Payouts and sucker bets aside, am disappointed to hear that the crews were less jovial. I've had my best times at their Craps tables. Sure, two of those times were my biggest Craps wins (cashing 800 on 100 buy in and 1500 on 500 buy in), but also enjoyed push and losing sessions there.

One of my favorite craps stories happened at the Golden Gate. The table got on a hot run and after the 7 came, the box yelled the minimums were going up to $10 with no grandfathering. An older gentleman about 90 yo stared at the box and went slack-jawed. Out of habit he had thrown down one red on the pass line and was corrected. He wore the funniest "wtf" look. He mumbled "Color me up, asshole"

I've also been at a table before 1 am and they abruptly closed the table.

Full pay field isn't that bad a bet. It's a sucker bet if they don't pay triple on 12s

I believe it's like 2.5% edge for triple on one and 4.5% for double on both. If for some reason the casino offered triple on both it would be a 0% house edge.

I was there when they changed the felt and the payouts on the ATS bets in November. Called them out on it, as it was the last nite of our trip and we had played there a lot since the Nugget had also made the switch in payouts, only earlier. Kinda sucks. Like they aren't making enough on us. Oh well. Too loud there anyway, and I hate having to follow every bet around the table to make sure it gets placed right because the dealers can't hear the players and vice versa.

2 years ago at GG I hit 6 points. Then they raised the table mins to $10 with no grandfathering in. It was 3am on a Sunday.

I have, many times. The Chinese players. That's why Vegas caters to them so much; they're money machines (it's not just the whales playing baccarat upstairs). Many times I've seen a bunch of them elbow up to a craps or roulette table and, trembling with hysteria, scatter field bets all over the place without even looking at what they're doing. Hopefully the Lucky Dragon, etc. will pull some of them off the strip. So, as far as changing the payouts and adding the 6 and 8, I'm sure it's hard for the casinos to resist turning up the suction..
