Regardless, GS is a fun place to play. They have 3 dollar 3:2 BJ which draws some interesting characters. Also, they have "sexy backjack" which isn't very sexy, but the girls are usually a hoot.

I have questioned the pit regarding hand pays on any amounts. I was told they are hoping to convert all their slot machines to TITO in the very near future. Apparently, it is very expensive to convert machines to TITO.

Also, when playing cards,do not be afraid to request a different table minimum or change the table from 6:5 to 3:2.

There are positives to being different, but not in this case. I know of no other casino in the area that has neither coin nor ticket payout. And the inconvenience easily causes me to avoid putting more than a dollar or two into their slots, even when staying there. If others feel the way I do, then certainly the loss of business is less costly than conversion to tickets.....rarely do you see their machines getting much use.

It may be expensive, but that didnt bother them when they converted the old spikes machines to this silly system. On my trip there this month, I was in there 3 times(playing BJ), I dont think I saw a single person playing slots, other than the ones at the bar.

I love the Spike, but if I were them, I would use a little bit of a different strategy.

They have 4 blackjack tables, and even at their busiest, they're not very busy. The rules, payouts and number of decks vary from table to table, and blackjack is the only table game they have.

My last trip there was Superbowl weekend, and I was always able to get at least 1 table to pay out at 3:2, except for during the Superbowl. And during the game, the tables were empty. That wasn't the case in 2011, as the tables were full during the game, and after, and they all paid 3:2.

So my way of thinking says, if blackjack is your only table game, you gotta make people want to come out of their way to play blackjack at your casino. Damn near every casino in Vegas has 'sexy' dealers, so that's not really an appeal anymore.

What I would do, is make every blackjack table player friendly. That means 3:2, double deck, split aces, double after split, dealer stay on soft 17, etc, etc, etc.

Now obviously, that will lower the profit margin at the tables, but once word spreads that the Gold Spike is THEE place to play blackjack, serious blackjack players will swarm there, and the tables will be full of action day and night.

As it is, the tables are only open certain hours, and with the extra traffic, they can be open making money for the casino 24 hours a day.

It's frustrating enough that we get stuck with crappy rules, continuous shuffle, etc, but tables that pay 6:5 are nothing more than stealing from your customers. Make the Spike the downtown blackjack destination, and you'll bring in a world of new clientele.

I thought the sexy dealers were sexy enough. It was fun. I did not see a 6/5 table. The BJ conditions are just about as good as you can find these days. Especially at a $5 table.

I don't think it is allowed by the gaming commission to switch a table from one game to another. I know that casinos have to inform the commission when they are even switching from a six deck shoe to an eight deck shoe. They can't just switch it back and forth.

Yes, TFK, they would be busier if they had great rules. But they wouldn't make money. I think casinos cannot afford to give away alcohol, pay the help, and pay the light bill, having great rules at low minimums. I wish they would do it, but I understand why they can't.

    They absolutely would make money.

What would be better, 2 closed and 2 near empty tables open 10-12 hours a day making a bigger profit margin, or 4 full tables open 24 hours a day making a smaller profit margin?

We had fun there last year playing $2 "sexy" blackjack. Hot ladies dealing and fun atmosphere. It's not the same Spike from before. But even if it smells more like The Mirage (a good thing), no you won't mistake it for a strip property. Plan to return next week!
