Any advice on fun bars in the downtown area we may have missed? The places we have went in the past and liked are stage door, ellis island, hogs n heifers, pizza rock

You should go to the Atomic at least once even just to say you've been, further afield Frankie's Tiki Bar on Charleston is worth a trip. I walk down during the afternoon (a bit sketchy at night) then Uber back after 2 or 3 drinks as I wouldn't be able to trust my legs to get me back.

Most any place in East Fremont. The Griffin is really nice when it's cold out. A grotto atmosphere that's warm and cozy. And seconding the Atomic recommendation, they have a great beer selection as well as full bar. A friend and I spent St. Patrick's night there (well, I guess until about 3 am the following day technically). Friendly staff and patrons, but can get pretty crowded (but that's true of any of them). We couldn't remember walking back to the Plaza after we left and didn't have any problem safety-wise. My wife and I always hit the Vanguard Lounge before it turns into a Red Bull and Vodka joint later in the night. Earlier on it's craft cocktails with top shelf liquor and and house-made mixers. Also a very friendly staff.

There are a couple of bars I'm going to actually call dives that I remember were fun although it's been a few years. Beauty Bar across from the El Cortez was fun and had a great band. LOL, the bouncer insisted on a hug as we left! :)

There's also one on one of the side streets, right by where the Mob Bar used to be, but I forget the name. It's the one with all of the bras hanging up. It looked like they were trying to give it kind of a badass reputation but it was fun too.
