So our son is stationed in San Diego until the end of January. We have never been there, so we are going to visit before he leaves. My son really only has time to spend with us on the weekend, so I talked my wife into flying to Vegas on Jan. 11th, staying two nights at the Plaza, then renting a car for the weekend. We will leave Friday morning for San Diego and stay until Monday morning. We will then drive back Monday morning to the Plaza and fly home Wednesday afternoon.

I was just wondering if anyone has ever drove from Vegas to San Diego or vise versa? Does this sound like a crazy plan, lol?

If you catch good traffic, you can be to San Diego (all on the 15) in about 4 hours. (Is he at Pendleton or Miramar?)

We made that drive several years ago. 4-5 hours, depending on what time of day you hit city traffic is very doable. We enjoyed the trip there much more than the drive and stay in LA the year before.

It's also about an hour flight and relatively cheap (about $140 per person) for a round trip.

You will be driving opposite the traffic, so you should be ok, but try to avoid rush hour (2-8 pm) between San Bernardino and San Diego.
If you avoid traffic, it doesn't take that much longer than flying, considering the time involved with getting to the airport and waiting. That said, avoiding traffic is harder than you might expect. There is always construction and cars seem to be everywhere in an area of 20 million + people.

If you can leave Vegas by 9 am, it should be smooth sailing. The reverse should be easier. Or you may want to fly home from san Diego. Budget rental cars often have the best deals for one way rentals.

    Thank you, will do.

Does anyone know if there are toll roads for this trip?

It's California, the land of the freeway. It's called that because it's free.

Actually two of the lanes are express lanes along the freeway for a few miles as you enter San Diego that either require a toll (via transponder) or multiple riders in the car. If there are 2 of you, you can use it without a transponder. But there is no reason to use the express lane if you aren't driving during rush hour.

I was about to suggest flying - pretty cheap. But, you are driving the opposite of Vegas weekend traffic, so not too bad.

San Diego is among our favorite cities to visit. Balboa Park, the beaches, Point Loma... great city.
