The only way you are going to occupy that suite is if no one else booked it. They are not going to hold it for you, guarantee it for you, turn down another patron for you, etc. There is no $2400 lost theo. Anyone else wants that room, you don't get it. Plain and simple.

I’m not so sure I agree with this. I do agree that I’d be the lowest priority guest in this situation (I.e. comped players and paying guests would be the higher priority, kind of like flying on standby). But if I book this suite based on available dates a few months in advance, they don’t know who else is going to want it in the months or weeks leading up to what will ultimately be my stay.

Yes, of course they can “bump” me in favour of higher priority guests... and I’d have no basis to argue it because I’m not paying for the upgrade. But it would be straight-up dumb of them to do that, considering that the whole reason why they’re offering me that upgrade is as a courtesy after I was materially affected by their website saying the rooms have safes when they don’t. By giving me the upgrade, they benefit by preventing me from writing a scathing review about what happened... and if they were to “bump” me, they know full well it would result in a much worse review about them reneging on top of what already happened.

To the original point, I do suspect the availability will be at a slower time in which it’s unlikely they’ll need all of their suites and at least one will be unoccupied anyhow. But again, there’s no way to predict that with certainty a matter of months out... so by committing that room to me with no realistic option to bump me once it’s booked is a proposition that comes with some level of risk.

All I’m saying is that such a risk, combined with the hard costs of upgrading me to that suite, almost certainly exceeds $24 in total value... which is why I think it’s a bad business decision, particularly when they know full well I’m unlikely to stay there again anyhow.

The maximum possible amount they can gain by giving me that upgrade is the $24 they won’t be paying me... whereas I believe the maximum possible cost and/or liability is far greater than that. Whether it’s $80 or $800 per day worth of theo that they’d be losing out on, it’s still more than $24.

There would be no headaches and no liability by just paying the $24. But if they don’t want to do it, they don’t want to do it. I have virtually no skin in the game either way, so I don’t really care. To me this just seems more like “it’s easier for me to just press the upgrade button than to have the cash expense authorized”.

I’d REALLY love to know what a true high roller really is at Eastside Cannery who gets those suites. Thought I heard a while back they were getting rid of their BJ tables or more likely cutting back the hours they were open, closing and cutting back hours some restaurants are open also? Also whoever said that the Oyster Bar should give pagers to people waiting is spot on, that place always seems to have a line waiting even in the morning!

On a related note, I can't believe it's 2019 and there are still hotel rooms without an in room safe. Doubly so for hotel rooms of a casino. I don't like having to worry about my items disappearing, or even think about it, when I'm in the casino or being stuck having to haul around a wallet full of cash.

A quick Google search shows hotel grade safes for around $150 to $200. Let's just say $200 plus $50 in labor and cost to install it. So for Eastside Cannery, that would be $250 x 300 or $75,000. That's not really that much money considering it will eliminate some theft, give guest a piece of mind, and give them an amenity over some other hotels.

I know Eastside Cannery is owned pretty much to prevent cannibalization of Sam's Town so probably can't expect much from it. It could even be that at one time they had safes in the room but removed that amenity (and maybe a few others) to steer more people to Sam's Town (which according to their site has in room safes) while forget to update their amenities list with room resellers.

Perhaps I'm missing something but I would doubt many high rollers, or even people playing black chips (which are not high rollers as I play them a fair bit and I'm not close to a HR by any metric), are frequenting the Eastside Cannery unless they're counting, shitfaced and lost, or there for 15 minutes on a lark.

Curious on their reply to your message.

Full updates replies to come... at Alibi in Aria now with @Astribling. We were originally going to go to Rao’s, but then we saw this...

Bleh. Then decided to go to Carbone, they quoted a half-hour wait, which we were ok with. So we went down to Alibi to kill time and play video poker.

    Then I hit this...

Because I know @Astribling is about to pass out into a food coma right now, for those of you who are following both of our reports, I’ll post the Carbone photos first in case some of you can’t wait :)

By my experience in Vegas, there are $100+ meals that feel like a donation to the restaurant... and then there are $100+ meals that taste and feel like they’re worth every penny. This was a case of the latter.

We got seated shortly after 7:45 pm and were given the usual finger foods lineup of pickled cauliflower, salami, bread, and aged Parmesan. Great way to stoke an appetite.

To drink, we got a 2011 Movia pinot noir from Slovenia. I can’t fake the wine knowledge well enough to speak intelligently about it, but I can say its slightly tart flavour matched well with what we had to eat.

We ordered a pasta each, and the legendary veal parmigan to share. Our server very thoughtfully cut it up for us tableside.

I had the tortellini in a ragu, and Astribling had a mushroom fettuccine. Again, both of these tasted like $30 dishes. Fresh pasta, and such thoroughly flavourful sauces. Went great with the veal.

Finished off with a nut cake and some limoncello. Hit the spot!

As promised, other updates on oyster bar and such to come soon (as well as the posts I haven’t responded to yet). That will probably have to wait until tomorrow. Gameplan now is to hit Ellis Island for a bit, then head down to Fremont on Trip to Strip, possibly get one more drink, pack, and then get up tomorrow to have breakfast before heading to the airport.

Let’s hope I’ll randomly hit a jackpot at EI and come home ahead :)

Also, on the way out of Aria, we saw these cops on bikes riding through the casino floor. I have never, ever seen this! Snuck a photo...

You older folks may not know who this is... but I ran into an internet celebrity, WelvenDaGreat, on Fremont Street just now!

He’s better known as the “deez nuts” and “who don’t got no bitches” guy.

I feel like 20% of people reading this will know who this is... but that 20% will understand the significance :)

I actually disagree with your premise here. I think if they offer you the upgrade and do follow through is a sound business decision on their part. It would likely not be a smart decision at a lot of properties, but for a property that is well off the beaten path and certainly not filled with high rollers it gives them a unique opportunity to bring a guest back who flat out said they would never stay there again. Also not only will you be going back, but you will be paying them something (base room cost). In addition to that their hope (and probably likelihood) is that you will spend time on property and money as well. Maybe you find a game you really like or a restaurant, or you really enjoy the room and order up some room service( these are all normal guest things). Now you have further added to the bottom line. The outside hope is that you fall in love with the suite and decide you want to book it again because as Suites go it is fairly affordable. Suddenly they took someone who had definitively stated they would never stay there again, and they got them back into the property for more than one night, made money off of them in other ways besides just the room and potentially built a longer term customer.

Is it a risk, yes. But the actual cost of that room to them is likely less than the 24 dollars they would have had to pay you (daily cleaning, linens, and amenities). That being said you're contemplating going back there if you can make it all work which is step 1 towards a win for them. Best case scenario for you is they offer you 2 nights when your dates line up and everything works out perfectly and you have an awesome stay (that's a win for the hotel too). Worst case scenario for you is they offer you some terms and conditions which don't work or the dates don't line up, but they still tried to accommodate you and in the process saved $24 from someone who was never coming back (that's also a win for the hotel) basically when your best and worst case scenario both result in a win for the hotel, they for sure handled it well. The only way this goes poorly for them is if they offer you the comp you take it and then they take it away. Then they are subjected to negative reviews on the internet (which they may or may not care about based on their website showing they have safes in the rooms)

It's impressive that you recognized him, man.

It's not like he has any sort of distinctive look.

Proof of life real fast. Safely at the airport now. Definitely won’t have time to write up the rest of my shenanigans from Oyster Bar onward until about tomorrow. But just thought you’d appreciate the “departure” footage, as depressing as it may be.

At first glance of him and the way he was dressed, that wouldn’t be an unreasonable assumption I’m afraid. Just googled around a bit, it seems others are saying the same thing :( I wish I’d had a better idea of that upon meeting him, I’d happily have bought him some clothes or something to eat.
