I dont know IF thats why. But, very near to Harrahs downtown Reno is Eldorado.

I havent been in awhile... Eldorado, Silver Legacy, Circus Circus all under one roof. Dont know if CET acquiring all three, just Eldorado.....

Nicest places in town reportedly Peppermill , Atlantis. Hilton by convention center converted to Grand Sierra a decade ago. I vaguely recall an attempt to open a small Italian-themed upscale resort on the river long ago....

Reno's always been a bit confusing to me... There are times, places, it seems like it has so much potential. There have been elements of my visits Ive really enjoyed. Its been noted for growth bursts, booms. Maybe its image, or old-time forces... but there seems to be something that always drags it back towards "tacky." I suspect California snobbery about Tahoe, and ugly-Nevada-sister of Las Vegas are all contributors.

    Had potential????

In the 60's and 70's Reno was "The Biggest Little City in the World", like the sign on Virginia St. proudly states.
[IMG]Virginia Street was ablaze with neon.

Fitzgerald's, with the "slowest elevators in the known universe", Nevada Club, where they paid $37.50 jackpots with a paper bag full of quarters. It was the only game in town. The only reason that my Dad didn't go there more was there was no place for my little brother and I (6 and 7). Tahoe had a place where you could "park" the kids (where Dotty's and the CVS are currently) You would sign the kids in with money and there were amusement machines, a small movie theater, and a snack bar. It's where I learned how to "beat" the "Pinch Hit" baseball machine. If you were down to two outs and got the bases loaded, and hit would get you a replay.

I learned how to do math there, by figuring out whether I was ahead or behind getting a replay on a pinball game. (OK, it's 180,000 and I'm on the third ball . . . )

They'd leave us off with $20.00 each and come back periodically to check on us.

But that was Tahoe, let's talk about Reno. When I was old enough (or "close enough"), I would go to Reno because it was a "faster" drive. You wanna talk about "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas??" That was like every time I went to Reno.

Of course, that ended in the late 70's when I went into the Navy. By the time I came home, gambling had been legalized in California, which killed Reno.

A bit off the thread but if you go on the Cali side, go down to South Lake Brewery. Turn 3 is a dive bar that has great drink specials and I would be remiss if I didn't mention Ernie's for breakfast.

Harrahs is shutting down because it is a total shithole whereas the 3 eldorado resorts are connected and fine. None of them compare to a 4 star Vegas resort. But they offer value gaming and are well maintained.

Other way around. Eldorado owns the 3 that are connected that you mentioned. They are dumping the decaying carcass that is harrahs.

Tahoe is the more interesting one. Eldorado owns montbleu. Not sure how that location shakes out with the merger. Gotta think they have to sell something there.

Gosh . . .all the hate against Harrahs Reno. I remember when it the the pride of Virginia Street, but that hasn't been since the 70's.

It's not THAT bad. Ever been next door to the Cal-Neva, or over to the Sands Regency?

The Sands new owners are dumping a ton of money into it.

The CalNeva is a shithole. Harrah's Reno just got neglected for too long. Kinda sad as I fell in love with Harrahs long before I learned anything about comps, player's cards, etc. To me it was a neat property with casino games on both sides of the skywalk AND on the second level near the buffet.

cal-neva, oh man. "better than the cal-neva" is not a standard for where I want to go.

Really, I think Reno is a great value destination for people whose focus is gambling plus a little bit of other stuff. I just think the value at places like Atlantis, Peppermill, GSR, and the Eldorado joints is good enough that you don't have to slum it at Harrahs unless you extremely value the Total Rewards program. Were I a 7 star...I might have stayed there as well.

Reno has 3 and 4 star resorts with great Video Poker, low limits on tables with decent rules, quality hotel rooms, lower slot holds, etc. The resorts are decent sized and offer decent value on food. It's not Vegas, but if I had a moderate gambling budget and easy access to Reno, I could see going here regularly - especially if you live in Northern California and don't mind the drive.

I think that's it...Harrah's treated this place like it treated the Rio for the last 15 years. They just let it decay.

In the property's defense. I am friends with the man who was the GM at Harrahs Reno, and he could NEVER, EVER get funds to revamp the rooms. I posted pictures of a suite on the top floor of the west tower and how "old" it looked.

I realize that it was a business decision, but geez, CET . . . .
