Merle Haggard with Glen Campbell and Buck Owens at the Fox Theater in Bakersfield in 1966. My friend and I drove all the way from the coast to see Merle. He had just released his first album. We were huge country western fans at the time—redneck farmers might be the better description. I think Merle was actually making the move on Buck's wife Bonnie at the time. My musical interests drastically changed in the coming years, especially after seeing the Doors on Ed Sullivan in 1967. But I still loved Haggard, who created what would come to be known as the "Bakersfield Sound."
