    My Trip Report

Hello all. This will be my first trip report posted here on VMB. I went to Las Vegas first in 1977 when I was 15, and of legal age 20+ times since '87. I've put a few reports on the LVA forums over the years, but honestly, I'd rather read from others'. I first have to mention a couple of sad things that happened this summer, so if you care to skip these first 2 paragraphs of bad news and get to my pre-trip details, go ahead.

Two weeks after booking this upcoming trip in early June, a very good lady friend of mine died at 29 of a heroin overdose. She used to be a waitress at a BW3's that I frequent here in the Milwaukee area. She worked there up until about 4 years ago. We kept in touch, and we would meet up occasionally. She was having constant issues with her son's father, and I gladly became a shoulder to cry on for her. Her parents (I met with her father a few days after her funeral, and they harbored no ill will towards me. She told him that I was her best guy friend) knew of her worsening addiction, but I had no idea it was as bad as it was. She had scoliosis, and took her meds to ease her pain, and as so often happens, became dependent. She had a prescription for Xanax, but never mentioned heroin. I tried my best to encourage her to seek more help and/or quit, and her father had paid for 2 stints in rehab for her, but it got worse. The last time I saw her, she was in good spirits and she was looking forward to going up to her family's cabin in Northern WI for the 4th of July. I miss you Avery. :(

In July, my father died. He was 93. He was a WWII Veteran and a firefighter in Milwaukee for 26 years. He had a spot on his lung which turned out to be cancerous. My mom passed in 2010, and he lived alone since then in an assisted living complex. So, his doctors, and we 8 siblings decided (and he agreed) that with his advanced age and outward physical condition, any chemo or other serious treatments were probably not very beneficial to him. Dad completely understood his situation. He wasn't in a lot of pain his last few weeks, but he passed in the middle of the night, so we kids really weren't able to say our goodbyes together. I regret that, but sometimes the Lord does what He does. Dad and Mom liked to go to Las Vegas. I think they were there probably 8 or 9 times. I miss you Don and Maryalice :(

So for me, this trip I have a heavy heart.

I'm entitling this the "Fall After a Sad Summer" trip report. Dates are 9/27-10/4. I'm meeting up with my buddy Terry, who's leaving MKE tonight on Southwest. He has a suite at the Golden Gate for 3 nights, El Cortez for 3, and The D for 4. His stays are overlapping, but it's 8 nights total for him. I have a 6:00 am flight tomorrow on Southwest, non-stop direct. B-35 boarding spot, with TSA Pre-check. ETA at McCarran is 7:50am local. My hotels are The D for 3, Orleans for 2, and The D again for 3. My stays are somewhat overlapping as well, 7 nights, but I'll be staying with him 1 night at the El Cortez Sat. 9/30. All of our stays are comped, with lots of freeplay, food comps, and matchplays (too many to list here. Really). Yay!

I don't rent a car, but I use the bus and the Boyd free shuttle as often as needed. I also like to walk. I'll buy a $20 3-day pass for the last part of my trip when I go to the Orleans. My plans are to use as many LVA and ACG coupons as possible, as I won't be going again this year. Terry always stays Downtown, with an annual Strip coupon run, which he's already done in Spring, so he won't be joining me at the Orleans. I play mostly .25 and .50 video poker, some table and video 21, with an occasional visit to a low-minimum craps or roulette table, and I'll pop a $20 into a slot machine every once in a while. Terry prefers 21, penny slots, and very little .5 and .25 video poker. But he saw 2 people get Royals at The D's Vue Bar in Spring, and it's piqued his interest, so he's going to join me a few times there.

So forgive me for my looooong introduction. I will download the Tapatalk app for my Galaxy S6, give it a try, and I'll probably end up doing it semi-live, with pics as I go, and a wrap-up after I get back. Thank you!

I really am hoping you take a shit ton of money outta that town RC. My condolences for the awful summer you've had. I've lost numerous friends to opioids/heroin addiction, and the feeling of helplessness you feel when one passes because of it is immeasurable. Personally, I never touch the stuff - opioids that is...Also sorry to hear this great country lost another WW2 vet - mostly sorry you lost your pops. However, it sounds to me like this vacation may be needed more than ever. Good luck my man. We'll all be pulling for you.

    rcbeamer,

You have had a rough patch, but it is okay. Lift a glass, bottle or can and toast Mom, Dad and Avery.

Remember all the good memories, laugh, cry, whatever you feel. The release will do you well.

I look forward to your report. Safe travels and enjoy Vegas!

Have a wonderful time. Sorry for your loss. My mom passed away in May with a long battle of dementia. Sometimes a few moments alone in your room will give you time to reflect and than enjoy all the bells and whistles of the casino. Wishing you lots of 4oak and Royals.

Your friend and father were fortunate to have you in their lives, I'm so sorry for your loss. That hole in your heart will be the size of Texas for a long time. Sounds like you have a nice long trip planned, and Vegas is an old friend, so let go and have a blast! I never, ever, ever bother to follow the live trip reports... I'll make an exception for this one and cheer you on along the way!

FB_IMG_1501272849690.jpg Thank you all again for your kind responses and encouragement. It means a lot to me. And tell your families and close friends that you love them. It will mean a lot to them too. Here's one more of Dad when he did an Honor Flight to D.C. in November of '10.

I was in a D.C. airport a couple years ago when one of those Honor Flights arrived. What a tremendously uplifting experience it was, even for those of us who just stood and clapped to pay our respects and gratitude, as the attendees passed by in the airport. I'm very sorry for your recent losses. Best wishes always!

Sorry for your losses. I have lost both parents and most of the rest of my family. My parents loved LV and frequented many times a year like I do. I feel every time I go they are there sitting next to me. Enjoy your trip you dad would want that more than anything for you. Good luck!!

My flight left MKE about 5 minutes late and arrived in LAS 10 minutes early. As soon as I got to baggage claim #4 my bag litteraly was on the carousel at the spot I walked up to. Great timing! :) I caught the next WAX bus 15 minutes later, and I was downtown at 9am. The D didn't have my room ready, so I dragged my bag to the GG and put it in Terry's room.

We hit the Fremont for their Young At Heart promo. Put 50 pts. on a Wed. and get a breakfast or lunch buffet. That took about 20 minutes of play, and the food hit the spot. I ended up putting more than 100 pts. on so I got a dinner buffet as well for later.

It's now Thurs. morning. Pics of small wins, and gambling hi-and lowlights to follow.

Part of our plan was to watch the Packers-Bears game in Terry's suite at the Gate Thursday night, and we did just that. It was a good way to relax for 3 hours. Turned out to be 4 because of the lightning delay. I won both of my $5 bets, on the Pack at -7 and the over at 44.5.
Right now, I'm at about a $200 loss for the trip. I really have to pace myself a little better! Here are a few pics of some small wins from Wed. and last night: BTW, the 4800 win below was only a penny machine at Main St. :) 20170929_104612.jpg 20170929_095245.jpg 20170927_124018.jpg 20170929_110601.jpg
