Can anyone compare these two types of room? Is one better then the other? Likely hood of getting an upgrade at check in with the $20 trick for a Sunday May 10 - Friday May 15 trip.

Luxor Room is about $22 for for the 5 days and both come with same f&b credit.

Royal Tower rooms have the old furnishings from Mandalay Bay. Luxor's Pyramid Premium rooms have brand new furnishings. Both have large showers, not tubs.
Luxor has the better pool and better restaurant selection. I prefer the casino at Excalibur. Note, if it rains, the Pyramid tends to leak around the windows.

At Excalibur, there really isn't anywhere to upgrade to that has 2 beds, unless you can negotiate your way into a Luxury or Royal Two Bedroom Suite.

At Luxor an easy step up is the Tower Premium 2 Queen. That room is larger, has a better bathroom with tub and separate glass shower. Above that is the Pyramid Premium Suite with 2 Queens.

Luxor for me since Excalibur is just waiting to get blown up.

Agreed but I don't think that is going to happen for quite a long time.

Gotta get rid of Circus Circus first.
