"Las Vegas police are investigating the apparent suicide of an elderly couple who jumped together from the parking deck of a hotel and casino.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that the couple was spotted arriving at the parking deck for the Silverton Hotel and Casino and parking on the fifth floor, the highest level of the garage. They got out of their vehicle and climbed up onto the exterior wall of the deck, then jumped.

The names of the couple had not been released as of Thursday morning, the Review-Journal said. Their deaths remain under investigation. "

If they wanted to go, well....

Personally, I would never think to do it that way. With my luck at Casinos, I would be terriblly injured but still alive - wishing I was dead. If you are gonna do it, pick something that will be final.

But, sorry for the loss to their family - if there was one.

Yep. Let's hope none of us ever get to that point. But if you make that decision, falling to a (perhaps-not-certain death) or dangling at the end of the rope, when the second thought sets in you're fucked and for those seconds or minutes ... how terrible.

That's a way to protest the future of parking fees.

Lotsa edgy and gallows humor around here at most times, but that's just not cool.

Financial trouble. Both age 63. My guess was something to do with bad health. Folks can dodge bad debt for a long time.

I agree, not cool to make jokes about this. We can let this topic stand as long as it stays appropriate. It's news-worthy and on the topic of Vegas, I guess.

Suicide is not the answer. Plus, it impacts so many other people. People parked in the parking garage, people driving by/witnesses, people who work there, first responders, people who have to deal with your remains, clean up your mess, etc. It's selfish. And so many things can go wrong, leaving you even worse off than you think you already are. My heart goes out to their family.

having the support of each other, it seems like they would be able to work through their problems. being alone is different. you never know, they may have had much more going on. life sucks often. it must have been bad to get to that point.

I think Slimm is talking about Silverton, not the couple.

A friend of our family was driving when someone decided they needed to end their life. He could have crashed his car into a cliff or tree, but decided to cross the center line and run head-on into our friend. He spent months in hospitals and rehab and almost 20 years later is still suffering the consequences. He used to be a scratch golfer, but now can hardly swing a driver. All because some stranger decided his problems needed to be someone else's problem.

Suicide is never the answer. Dark days happen and sometimes problems can seem truly insurmountable, but there is always a way through. If you are having difficulty, there are people out there who can help you find your way. Call someone!!

Oh, sorry, missed that segue by a mile, I guess. I imagine that might work a bit better on, well, a Silverton/food thread?! lol

Short of mental illness, I just can't grasp how people arrive at that decision. No matter how far in debt they were, they still had options.

Hell, if you told me that I was going to lose everything and my options were to start over homeless or kill myself, I'd start over homeless. Once you take that final step there are no redos. You get one shot at life.

    Sad. Hope they found peace.

But I must say, I object to the initial story that called the couple "elderly." 63 is barely out of college!

And that is how some of us do not get it. You or I would just start over. Some people do not think there is a way to start over and only think of the worse possible scenario. Each of us has different levels of confidence and optimism.

It truly is hard to put ourselves in that other pair of shoes.

They were able to find two court records. My guess is there is probably many other debt issues that have not hit the courts. So sad.
