    So how does this work?

Our flight is scheduled to arrive around 0730 on a Sunday. I imagine between luggage collection and ride to Planet Hollywood we will be on property prior to 0900.

Do I attempt to check-in super early (room likely not available) and ask for upgrade?

Drop luggage and come back around noon in hope of scoring a better room?

    Something else?

We have a comped Ultra Hip King for 5 nights and would like to maximize our chances of getting something nicer. We don't mind waiting to gain access to the room as we have brunch and pool plans for the day of arrival.

    Thanks in advance, Toro

I would check in as soon as I arrived. Worst case scenario you give your bags to bell captain and wait for a call when your room is ready.
Try the $20 trick to get an upgrade on a room that might be ready.

Sunday mornings are tricky as the hotels are usually still full of weekenders. I suspect you could get early check in if you're willing to take whatever they have available, or increase your chances for an upgrade later in the day, but not both.

I'm in the same boat in a couple weeks, arriving early on a Sunday. As fugsworth says it's unlikely they're going to have rooms available (in my case it's the day after NFR, so I'm doubly screwed) in the AM. I'm just going to drop my bags and do the usual MGM resort early check in on mobile, and let them email me when a room is available. CET does a similar thing if you just want to avoid the check in line and use the kiosk for your keys. If you have preferences or are trying to get an upgrade I'd wait until after noon to even approach the desk.

In my opinion Sunday are always hardest to get a early check in compared to when I fly in on a weekday and my room is ready. Due to them having to clean the room and people checking out that day.

To be clear, I do not care about room access; my goal is to get an upgrade. I'll throw some cash at the desk critter but the timing of when to do so is the head scratcher.

Maybe don't refer to them as "critters" when you check in. Might help with that upgrade.

Sooooooo different c-word? I think that would be less helpful but then again, I'm the one asking for advice.

We usually stay at PH and arrive between 10am and 1pm Vegas time and have yet to get an early check-in and have to wait an hour or more.
If there is a room available it is usually a very low floor number or smoking room.
It would be surprising to acquire an upgrade for an early check-in unless it is unusually slow.

Anything can happen. I'd go ahead and just take a shot as soon as you arrive, if you can't get what you want, try later.

I was scheduled to move from Palazzo to PH on a Tuesday once, couldn't sleep, so I packed up and moved at 5:00am. Went to the front desk, they said they'd have to charge me $59 to check me in that early (basically charging me for the overnight), I said fine, they ended up putting me on the penthouse floor, which wasn't technically an upgrade to the room type, but was awesome anyway. Being a Tuesday probably helped. Sunday's probably going to be tougher, but it depends on the exact date. The weekend after CES is dead, for example.

    that would be my thoughts.

I would also add that the #1 factor is having a room available - at any cost. Nobody can give out a room they do not have ready.
