I played $5 3:2 blackjack at both The D and GG in May with dancers. To my wife and I, we'd just rather gamble in that atmosphere than a quiet place chalked full of old people. We sat down at a table @ Four Queens (6:5 btw...) and left after 5 minutes. And no, we're not twenty somethings that go to the club. We're mid to late 30's who like to drink and gamble. I just think these places offer a more fun atmosphere that, at least to us, is more conducive to us staying longer and gambling more.

I think there is a casino for people of each age group. Many of us older types don't like the D and GG because of the loud music (I don't mind the scantily clad dancing dealers), to many of us it is too loud so we don't frequent those casinos much. The Fremont, Cal and MSS cater to the (older) Hawaiians and so the casino is mellow (probably dead to you though, lol).

I like the diversity and we can play where ever we feel comfortable with. It will be hard to satisfy everyone so each casino group caters to a specific crowd.

I couldn't get the codes to work when booking online either so I phoned them last week and booked 1 nt. That reminds me though, they said they were going to email me the confirmation but I still haven't received it. I wrote down the confirmation number but I like to have it in writing so I guess I will have to phone them again. :rolleyes2:

I'm not saying the 'party' casino that the D and the Gate have turned into is a bad idea, as obviously they are making money with them, I'm just saying not every casino needs to be a party casino. There is a market out there for casinos where people want value and good gambling and don't need all of the extra-curricular activities. I'd rather have a more laid back atmosphere where the focus is on gambling, not on the 'party'. And there is money to be made in a downtown casino that caters to the gambler.

This was a cash for American visa play, same as SLS. Hundreds of Chinese millionaires "invested" for the right to stay in the US, not for any expectation of a profit or even a chance to get their capital back.

Someone will scoop this up for pennies on the dollar, same as SLS in a few years (and Cosmo earlier this year).

Sad but very true. Green cards aren't visas, but there are sloppy projects across the country funded by this program.

My sister and I just returned from our nine day stay in Vegas...two nights for the first time at The Grand and seven nights at The CAL. We really loved The Grand...from the best pool in Vegas (no fighting for chairs, no little kids running around, etc.), gorgeous rooms, friendly staff, love the fine decorating touches throughout the entire property, and some of the nicest pit crew I have ever seen.

However, EPIC FAIL...not opening the tables until 2:00 p.m. We checked in at 11:00 with our usual routine of unpacking and in room cocktail to celebrate our arrival. Our next stop is always the tables. This was impossible as they were closed! We went to the CAL and played there for six hours. This was six hours of play that The Grand lost. Obviously, this is not an isolated occurrence. If someone goes to The Grand to play cards, craps, etc., only to see they are closed until 2:00 p.m., they go to another casino and don't return.

Hope something turns around as we really enjoyed the property and liked the location being one block away from all the craziness of FSE.

My wife and I were in the Grand for the first time a week ago, and it was a morgue. We arrived late afternoon, as we had reservations for Gordie Brown, and visited the Grand first, as we missed it last year. Sad, is all I can say...very few people in the place and the atmosphere was filled with doom and gloom. We played a few slots and left after a half an hour. What a disappointment. IMO, the handwriting was on the wall....

outstanding point on the Visas.....that entire program is basically "burn $500,000 get into the USA to stay"

I am not in the market for a Vegas property even at pennies on the dollar though :drooling:

I was thinking of staying again in Nov but I may have to start looking at staying for the first time at GN. I don't want to go back to the strip but don't want to stay at some dump either...

Very sad. It had become our favorite place to stay. We even liked the casino environment, at least for the machines. Hopefully someone will pick it up at a good price and be able to make a profitable go of it.

I have stayed there twice since it opened and I totally missed out on the 'bringing luxury to downtown'. I rated it as 'cleaner than Lady Luck'. I seriously thought that was all they were trying to accomplish. Oh, and a club pool downtown for all of the young, rich, beautiful people who decided that they were tired of the Strip.

That's interesting... might be a clue as to the (rumored) closing date.

Good that the storm didn't affect you much. My BIL showed us pics from the storm, was funny because a car parked in the street got flooded, he took pics every few minutes and the water rose over 2 1/2 feet till it was just about the height of the door.

My BIL also said that the TV problem at the Cal was due to them switching tv providers at the time. They turned off the signal until the switched to the new one. But he also said that there was a lot of construction going on at the cal, they blocked off the area by the player's club and one day (or more) they closed off the escalator to the mezzanine.

Yes too bad, I hope that they DTG stays open or gets sold soon. I would hate for it to shut down like they did the Lady Luck. The DTG is a nice hotel but I don't think the owners know how to run a downtown vegas hotel.
