For the notebook, may i recommend the Moleskine bound books that are lined. They work wonderfully for tracking session and fit in a back pocket no problem, plus don't fall apart when bent at the spine from sitting.

    That's what I use, so I wanted to share! They're maybe 4" x 2.5"

Rob, you and I are almost identical Vegas gamblers! The last three trips, I've managed to maintain 3k, 4K, and my last junket I had all of the 5k by the beginning of my last full gambling day of our 4 day vacation. Sadly the first two trips I brought home only 1k and for those I came home feeling like a loser (like most of the times lol) so the last one I gambled conservatively and I still won so I actually came home a winner!

I tend to do the opposite and play more conservatively the first day... If I get my hands on some house money I'll then get more aggressive. Although I've also been known to spend all my winnings at the Spearmint Rhino later the same night! :evillaugh:

My son told me once that we use all our luck getting to Vegas with no problems that we shouldn't bother gambling the first day. I can't help it I get there and run to the casino first thing

I have rules before the trip that I usually break by day 2/3..... Nothing worse than counting your notes twice a day and having to re-allocate funds due to digging into the next day's money. That said it happens every trip.....

This Jan I will try the envelope system yet again, and it'll probably fail. Morale of the story I should take a larger bankroll next time or shorten my trips.

I gamble like a drunken sailor Day 1; if Day 1 is lucky, it's great as the bankroll really grows. When Day 1 isn't lucky, I play catch up.

I normally take it easy on the first day. My wife also feels the need to unpack everything so I make a run to the ABC store and gather some ice. We almost always stay at our home casino the first night. I also use the envelope system but on our last trip in November which was unplanned and a bonus trip for the year I skipped the envelopes and took $6000 for our 5 night trip. Since I had already made diamond for the next year we did more wandering and sightseeing even going to the Secret Garden for the first time. I ended up averaging 250 tier credits a day which is half what I normally shoot for but the biggest surprise was when I counted the bankroll the last night I had almost $7500. It was a pleasant surprise since my biggest win was $500 on TDB at the quarter level.

I always tend to have longer trips of nine-ten days, my first night is always easy, usually I sit down for a limit poker game to have a couple of beers, I have been awake about 24 hours by then since I travel from Europe....
After that, I usually get my FP and do max-bet to see if it gets me anywhere, last two times it worked like a charm. If a lose more on a given day than I actually want, I go have a nice dinner. :)

I'm gonna be honest. I usually say that I'm gonna pace myself when I get to Vegas, but usually get stupid first day I arrive. Gotta get more disciplined for my march madness trip! I should realize that I'm gonna be playing tired ( buffalo ny is 3 hours ahead). I pray that march 15th I will follow my own advice. Sounds like I'm the only one who does this crap?!

I think I'm a bit more conservative with my gambling (slightly lower stakes, lower variance games, more likely to book a quick win or cap a quick loss, etc.), but...

    This!

So, I usually end up playing more (time) the first day than on other days.

if I have any discipline at all, it wears off after about a day and half. I start out keeping notes of my wins/losses and then it becomes so ugly (losses), I just stop writing it down.

You're not alone! Coming from Ireland the jet lag never stops me wanting to 'catch up' to be on Vegas time (-8hrs time difference).

It's cliché but there is definitely a link between playing when tired and losing (even when keeping to usual bets and strategies)

This is an interesting post that made me think/laugh. I almost NEVER gamble for the first 24 hours after I land.
I normally get in about 6 or 8 hours before my friends, so I check-in, un-pack, trip to walgreens, collect MyVegas comps, collect other comps, hit the pool. I am there for 5 days, those tables aren't going anywhere.

East coast, all I can say is that you are the most disciplined gambler I've ever read about! No gambling at all on your first day in Vegas? I travel out west ( from"east coast") 2/3 times a year! I hope that after waiting 5/6 months to get to Vegas I can hold off on that sports book bet, VP spin and/or hard 6 roll, till my 2nd day in Vegas. Dude...that's some serious discipline! Congrats !!!

To be honest, I am no much of a pure gambler. I am in Vegas for different reasons that most people, I think..... If I were a pure gambler, I would just gamble at the 3 casinos in Maryland, 45 minutes from my house. Shit, they offer better odds than Vegas. But, that is not the case.

My absolutes on arrival are: before going to room I throw a hundy in a favorite slot. Go to room, unpack, freshen up, grab my daily envelope, put remaining envelopes in safe, head downstairs to the party.

My first day could be described as frenzied - So, based on previous experience, I frontload my 1st day envelope, by far the heftiest of the trip as I like to start out with a bang. I'm so excited to be back home in Vegas, away from the serious business of daily life, BIG money burning a hole in my pocket, so many slots, so little time....this is usually my longest day and night of gambling. Woohoo!!

The rest of my trip is pretty normal with a more workman like approach to gambling and shows and dining - slow and steady and a bit more strategy, but let's face it, slots don't respond much to strategy, so I just have fun playing for as long as the money holds out or til I catch myself nodding off. :snore::snore:

Every trip, I arrive with a new strategy. Every trip, most of that strategy never sees the light of day, except for the one regarding hand-pays. Any hand-pays now go directly to the room and back home, we used to keep some to amp up our play but now we use handpays towards future trips or vacations.

I usually take the amount of money I'm okay with losing ... lets say $2k and divide that evenly by the days I'll be there. So if its 4 days, $500/day.

Day 1 gets $500 and if things go okay and I'm even after the day, I'll roll 50% of that to the next day, and so on.... day 2 could get $750 to play with.

I need to be more careful my first night. I get too "Vegas-crazy" and want to go hog-wild the first minute I'm there.

Usually ends bad. 2 of 3 Vegas trips I had to make a visit to the ATM before midnight. Yikes.
