I've been playing craps for years now but only on my last trip did I start dipping into come bets.

    So 2 questions:

    1. Can you set down a bet (say $5) and tell the dealers "make that a come bet on the 9"? Or does it have to be rolled on the 9 for it to be put there first?

    2. Can you at any point in time say "turn off my bets" including come bets? (I know place bets can be turned off but I'm unsure about come bets).

you're confusing come bets with place bets. a come bet is just starting a new pass line bet started mid-roll. if you want to put a bet on the 9, you would just place the 9. when you put your money on the come, it's exactly like putting that money on the pass line before a roll. you don't get to pick what the point is going to be in either case.

you can't remove a come bet just like you can't turn off/remove a pass line bet. however, you can always add/remove odds at any time.

Because you explained that you realize place bets can be turned off, I'm assuming you're NOT getting place bets and come bets confused. But as shifter said, you can't decide where your come bet goes....you need to wait until the roll decides for you.

There is something called a "put bet" that nobody ever talks about, but it IS an option. It has the exact same rules as a come bet, but you get to choose which number is goes on. So if, for some odd reason, you wanted your $5 flat come bet to travel to the nine automatically, you would just give the dealer a red chip and say "I'd like a put bet on the nine". You could then put odds on it if you wanted, just like a come bet.

However, the reason put bets aren't popular is because they are terrible bets. A $5 put bet on the nine with $10 odds pays $20 (the same as a come bet payoff). You could take that same $15 and just place the nine, which would pay you $21. Plus, if you make a put bet, the flat bet would be stuck there without the option of turning it off or taking it down.

This is why I don't do Come bets. All you can do is turn off your odds, the original Come bet is always on.

You are right, I wasn't confusing the 2 bets but I should have been more specific.

Place bets are what I normally use but lately I've decided to place the inside then begin going with come bets and odds, using my initial place bet as the odds. I sometimes just wish you could put the come bet directly on the desired number(s) but I guess that is a put bet, as you described.

I like having the additional odds on the come bets but I hate that it takes so long to build them up sometimes.

a come bet is like a new pass line bet. the next roll of the dice will be your point for that number.

    come bets

    Good points with come bets.

But remember, with a "7 or 11" a come bet still wins.

Great bet for a choppy shooter.

one of the best things about a come bet is the ability to instantly win that bet on a 7 or 11, which comes out 1/4 of the time. if you do a put bet, you don't get that option, which severely increases the HA on that bet. that's why it's a bad move.

Come bets are a bit of a hedge bet. That's why some players use them. I always use come bets and convert to place bets (after they hit). I play a basic 3 point molly until I have won 3 bets, then convert to place bets after they hit. The "put" bet is allowed in some casinos. Just ask the dealer. They can be useful when multiple odds of 10x or higher are allowed and you have a long hand in progress. The "put" bet can stay up instead of coming down after it hits. Do the math. Casino Royale is a good example. They use to allow 100x odds (may still, I don't know) and there were some high bankroll players taking advantage with the "put" bet.

One situation where I can imagine doing put bets is if your place bet is pressed to your table max. Then to put more money on the number you need to do put bets. For instance, 5k is the usual table max for placing the 4, but you can do a put bet for 5k and 15k behind or any variation below that.

You could place bet AND do come bets. Or you could throw lay bets in.
