I would love to be able to have open discussions as we move forward as to how changes being made are going to change your travel plans and what that means for the future of Las Vegas.

However, I need YOUR help to not make every thread the typical internet dumpster fire with misinformation and hype. I work very hard to provide a source of good information here. I would love to allow open discussions about all kinds of topics, but every thread that has organically started in the last few days has quickly gone off the rails. And that's if it didn't initially start in some crazed "Let me be the first to post this on VMB" mania. :rolleyes2: You want to have these discussions, prove to me that we can have them here without it becoming a moderation nightmare. I'm tired, I'm in pain, I'm trying to recover from sinus surgery right now and I'm considering just turning off the lights.

I want to try to let some threads stay open that are coronavirus related, but impact Las Vegas directly. HOWEVER, anyone who posts misinformation, spreads hype, overstates, brings in political opinion (and yes, it's political, even when you disagree!), or otherwise violates our rules, will be giving a harsh warning and may lose their posting privileges here on VMB.

As you should be aware by now, we are restricting COVID-19 threads on the board to prevent the spread of misinformation and hype and causing undue alarm.

People who violate our policies are having those posts removed and are receiving warning points. Some of you are going to have some of your posting privileges removed because of these warnings, most likely resulting in your posts requiring moderator approval before appearing on the open board. Some of you are going to get a temporary vacation from VMB. The way to avoid this is to not violate our rules. Please know that we are specifically targeting snarky posts about the virus and jokes/memes in serious discussions.

The moderators and I are doing our absolute best to keep our sticky threads updated, confirm the rumors, answer questions and keep the board functional. I can not promise immediate attention to all of your needs. I will do my best to get through my emails and private messages within a day, but if I miss your question, please just patiently remind me you are waiting for an answer instead of further escalating the issue and causing more trouble for the mods and I.

I have heard from some of you that you have concerns about us restricting some threads, deleting snark and jokes, etc. Our rules are clear about the limits and policies for our removing or editing posts on the board. I try very hard to apply the rules equally and fairly. If you think I punished you, but not that other thing, feel free to report it and we will look at it.

Bottom line is that I'm doing the best I can. If you don't like that, I guess I can tell you "sorry", but I assume that won't change much of anything for anyone.

Just wanted to remind everyone that we are still restricting threads on Coronavirus on VMB. Nobody here should be giving out medical advice to fellow members. :nono: It also isn't our place to argue the efficacy of masks or other suggestions being made by the CDC.

We also are limiting threads that speculate in any way on the opening date of any casinos, what casinos will be like when they open on whatever date, whether pools will be the same, clubs, gambling, restaurants, buffets, etc. All of that is speculation until we have solid information from reliable sources.

    Reliable sources:
    • Press release from a casino or casino group.
    • Statement or other announcement from casino or casino group.
    • Statement or order directly from the office of the Governor of Nevada.

    Non-Reliable sources:
    • Something you read on a blog.
    • Something you read on social media.
    • Something someone who works at a casino tells you they are hearing.
    • Something a friend in Vegas tells you.

I understand that a lot of you want to speculate about what Vegas will be like and how soon you can get back there, but these conversations are all just guessing. That guessing has been proving a problem here. Often there are different factions needing to be right at any cost, and attacking people who disagree with them. At minimum, the speculation causes people to raise expectations only to have them dashed a couple weeks later.

So, our policy here is that Vegas is closed until further notice. When we hear directly from the Governor or the casinos, I promise you that we will announce it here and then we are free to argue about whether or not it is "too soon" to go back to Vegas, mask wearing in Vegas, whether or not buffets are gross in the time of pandemics, etc.

I have decided to move this out of the original thread and address it more in depth here instead. Here is the original exchange:

    My response:
We give some latitude in Trip Reports, but will continue our policies on dis/misinformation, politics, and attacks on fellow board members. Everyone should be able to share plenty of information on current conditions in Las Vegas without violating those boundaries. And cooperation from people commenting to not drive the train off the rails would be appreciated. :)

    --------------------

Please revisit the post above from April 13th.

I feel like our policy has been clear all along. Our top priority was/is to prevent the spread of dis/misinformation, rumors and speculation to help to keep the threads here factual, based on verified information, less inclined to misinform people and not to raise hopes, only to have them dashed a few days or weeks later when actual policy comes out. Thanks to the hard work of my volunteer moderators, and cooperation from most of you, we've managed to do a pretty good job with that.

As more verifiable information has become available, we have tried to open more topics for conversation. Unfortunately a series of "When are you going back" and similar threads all ended up being closed. This was not an act of censorship, as many like to claim. We left them open as long as practical, but at a certain point a thread is off the rails and the effort to remove offending posts and clean it up becomes a lot more work than it is worth.

The plan going forward is that once we have heard from the Governor of a definite reopening date for the casinos, we will open up more topics for discussion. I would hope that the standard set of board rules would apply, including the ones for COVID-19. I ask people to take some deep breaths and be extra kind to each other. Have some patience. We are all doing the best we can to keep VMB the kind of place where you can find a friendly environment of people who love to travel to Las Vegas.

I recognize that several of you are not sure when you want to return to Las Vegas and the threads, especially first hand accounts from VMBers who are in town, sharing their trip reports, are going to be hugely helpful in deciding if the current Las Vegas is the one you want to return to. And also balance what is open with your personal risk for travel right now. I want you to know that I understand that completely and I'm trying to set us up so that we can be successful in being a good source for that kind of information.

I am doing my absolute best to collect and share as much information as I can about all aspects of the Las Vegas closure, the plans for reopening, the virus and pandemic itself, as well as try to update as much as I can on the locals and tribal casinos opening and their policies and procedures. It's been a little overwhelming and I feel like I'm constantly playing catch up. I appreciate those of you sending me your links to articles and casino openings. Every little bit helps.

As we go forward, please remember that the Report button is there for a reason. If a post seems to be in violation of the rules, please use Report in every post and PM to let us know, instead of further inflaming the issue. If you have a question or concern about why a topic is/isn't open for discussion, please know my PMs are always open. Just start a private conversation with me and I'm happy to answer whatever questions I can. Please know I'm stretched a little thin right now and can't always promise an immediate answer. I will do my best to reply ASAP, usually within 24 hours.

Now, in regard to Trip Reports. We try to do our best not to close or intervene in TRs. I feel like they should be your own personal travelogue.

We will typically only intervene if there is:

Personal attacks, either by the OP or in the replies. We have had a couple of problems in the past with people who want to poke at the OP for some reason. We have tools to remove the offending person from the thread and intend to continue to use this to keep TRs, especially Live TRs, open.

Dis/Misinformation - This is always against the rules here. If you are knowingly sharing disinformation, you will lose your account at VMB. I ask people who are doing live TRs to be careful with your claims. You may hear some interesting things from your taxi driver or bartender, but that does not make them based in fact. Please try to avoid sharing rumors and speculation. First hand accounts of what you see with your own eyes is great, but we want to avoid any unsubstantiated rumors.

Politics - And I'm going to include the to wear or not to wear a mask in this, because this is starting to be an issue here, and throughout the country. The "official" policy here is that if a property's policy is to "strongly encourage" guests to wear masks, you should be wearing one. Of course, that decision is ultimately up to you. There are people who are making it a political issue to defy the guidance issued by the government, casinos and scientists. That activity is discouraged here. Please. You are free to do as your wish, as long as it's okay with the casino, but making it the central theme of your posts and TR are inappropriate and will be treated as we would any political opinion post.

And all the other rules of the board will continue to apply. You can always find the rules for the board Here (linked in the bottom right of the board for Terms and Rules) or in this thread Here (a sticky thread in the Admin Announcements section). If you have any questions or concerns, my Private Messages are always open.

I thank you for your cooperation during this crazy time. I hope I can continue to count on you as we move forward. And a note for the people who keep getting warnings for violating the rules, please be careful. Points no longer expire and some of you are getting dangerously close to having a temporary or permanent ban from VMB. I hate banning people because I feel like we should all be able to act like adults and control ourselves on the board. But if you can't get along here, I'm going to have to ask you to move along.

Thanks! I hope that clarifies things a bit.

Just a reminder about masks. The guidance in Las Vegas is that masks and social distancing are required. Posts and discussions about evading the mask mandate are inappropriate. Celebrating people who aren't wearing masks is inappropriate. Threatening or complaining about employees doing their job by asking you to put your mask back on is inappropriate. It doesn't make you look cute or clever, it makes you look like a selfish jerk.

Even after you have received both your vaccine doses (or one of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine) you must continue to wear a mask when you are in public with people from outside your household group.

The reason for this is twofold - It is to protect yourself as we don't yet have data for whether or not you can become infected and seriously ill after receiving the vaccine. But more so, it is to protect those who have not yet received their vaccine. You can still spread it, even if you are asymptomatic.

The virus is not gone and we do not have any thing resembling herd immunity yet from the vaccines. There are signs that vaccine production and distribution are increasing, but we are a long ways away from having the majority of the population vaccinated.

In the mean time, the virus is still spreading. The US is still registering more than 50,000 new cases per day, and upwards of 1000 deaths per day. I don't believe that losing a 9/11 worth of people every 3 days is a success story.

In addition, the more we allow this virus to spread, the greater the likelihood that there will be further mutations. Each mutation risks a virus that will evade the effectiveness of the vaccines and put us right back to where we started.

Our policy at VMB is that everyone should comply with the guidance issued by the state of Nevada, Clark County and the individual properties you are visiting. This means masks are good and distancing when you can is good. If that's a problem for you, I suggest you find somewhere else to talk about Las Vegas.

If we do this right, we are in the home stretch. If we can just keep up the best practices for containing the virus until the majority of people have received their vaccine, we can return to normalcy. I've seen a lot of talk and predictions about how the mask mandates will probably be in effect into July, but hopefully by then we can start to see a real return to normalcy with looser restrictions are more people are protected from serious illness and death in the later summer months and into fall.

If we, as individuals, decide that we're above the rules, then we're going to be back into another spike, more restrictions and a longer duration of this pandemic. Please, everyone needs to do their part so we can get back to some semblance of normalcy.
