My mom already ordered several boxes of masks for everyone in the family, lol. Mine arrives tomorrow.

I think we're pretty close to the same level of hysteria that we saw during the SARS outbreak...pretty soon I'll be able to clear a room just by pretending to cough a lot.

British Airways has suspended all direct flights to and from mainland China.
This is following large reductions United announced due to “significant decline in demand”.

Probably valid. How many of you got your flu shot this season? Because according to the CDC, there have been 140,000 hospitalizations and 8,200 deaths in the U.S. in the 2019-2020 season.

Today's WHO report says there are 6065 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the world. As of a few days ago, I think the death toll from coronavirus was 80-something (google skills are failing me). Could it get worse? Sure! Should you protect yourself? Sure! Should you go crazy and buy all the masks from all the stores? Um... maybe not.

Posting the gis data map again :) Updated every 24 hours from reliable data sources https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6

Also Lancet article released today showing this is a distinct coronavirus from SARS, likely also bat reservoirs.

And of course I got my flu shot. Every year since 1993. or 94. I work with crazy people who work on things like the Wuhan Coronavirus - you think I'm not going to have ANY vaccine for which I'm eligible? Well, I will. I hate needles, but I love public health :)

I'm pretty consistent with my flu shots. Terri isn't. She gets something every early winter. I do not.

Our health plan covers them with no co-pay. I am the biggest baby when it comes to needles, but I do get a flu shot every year.

Just heard a person in Vegas has been hospitalized for the possible virus. I’m scheduled for next month at Southpoint and Bally’s but thinking of cancelling. What a scary mess!

I will take prudent precautions (e.g. washing hands frequently, NOT flying to China right now) when I travel. However, unless there is a strong travel advisory about not going somewhere, I won't be a captive to highly speculative fears.

This is really no surprise as long as this thing has been out there and the number of foreign travelers Las Vegas gets.

Really? Off one presumed case? If it was that dangerous that you can't be in the city because of it, you likely would not be safe in your city either as Vegas is a hub to everywhere. We're mostly first order infections from Wuhan right now. Maybe pump the brakes until you see if / how fast cases escalate in cities that have it.

So for perspective, there were 34,000 deaths from the common flu in the US last year. I think you'll be ok. (I'm travelling through Asia in March and haven't even cancelled my trip to Macau)

    Just watch!

If the diagnosis is positive, it will be the lede on local news and it will make national news.

If it's negative, you will hear no more about it.

So if you were living where I am, what would you do? There's a woman being treated in Hoffman Estates IL, about 20 mins from me.

As others have said, the flu has been far deadlier.

Thanks all, I should have figured it’d take a bunch of VMB’ers to knock some sense into me! I’m not cancelling anything!!! If I hit a big progressive it’s your fault! Lol

There should be sensible precautions. Especially screening people flying into Las Vegas, primarily from Asia.

One real issue is that casinos are perfect breeding grounds for infection. People stop and play random machines, then others stop and handle the buttons.

I haven't heard anything that makes me think this is Captain Trips, but there is some concern China isn't being entirely forward about the infection rates and mortality rates.

Wash your hand with soap and hot water, frequently. Possibly wear rubber gloves. If you feel sick, wear a face mask to protect others and wear eye protection to avoid getting infected via your eyes.

I don't think this is the apocalypse, but there are steps you can take to minimize risk.
