I've read here that casinos are looking for around 4 hours of play at BJ for it to really "count" towards comps...does this have to be at one sitting or do 6 thirty minute sessions in a day count the same as sitting for 4 hours straight?

It doesn't have to be in one sitting. They measure how much you play total on any given day

Just make sure they track each time you play. I often only play at a table for 10-15 minutes and move on if things are not good, etc. I think sometimes they do not even bother to rate me.

(hint - almost every post here is a question, and in this section, about comps - so descriptive title helps)

I think that is true. I never sit down with an intent to play for less than half an hour if only because I'm not confident the supervisor records my play for just a few minutes at a time
