    My Trip Report

First off, I just want to say that this was our first time staying at the Cosmopolitan and we absolutely fell in love with the place. We’ve been in there a bunch of times over the years and always liked it, but never had a chance to get to know it like we did this time. The hotel and casino’s staff were all awesome and the service we experienced was great everywhere in the resort.

My oldest son turned 21 earlier this year, and I have wanted to take him to Vegas, but there hasn’t been a time that worked for both of us. My lovely wife and I have been making the trek to Vegas every year around Christmas time since 2004, so we decided that we would take him with us this year if he could get the time off. And then we decided to take his 16-year-old brother too, since we don’t get much time with the four of us together anymore. Everything came together, and we made it happen. The last time they were in Vegas they were 5 and 9 years old, and we stayed one night on the way to a vacation in Southern California. We just don’t usually even consider taking them, but I am happy that we did this time.

We flew on Southwest out of Denver. The flight was on time and uneventful. Smooth travel on Christmas morning. We arrived a little ahead of schedule at 9:20am. It was rainy and overcast, but the weather cleared up just a little later that morning. After getting our luggage from the baggage claim and a quick Lyft ride to the hotel, we left our bags with the bell desk and proceeded to the check-in counter. I knew we wouldn’t get a room that early, but they put you on the list for available rooms in the order you check in, so I like to get it taken care of right away. We didn’t have to wait long at all for a check-in agent, who happened to be very friendly and helpful. We didn’t try for an upgrade, as we already had a nice room reserved, but we did have some special requests, like a roll-away bed. We got our keys and the promise of a text message with room number as soon as it was ready.

After the check-in experience we wandered over to The Henry to get breakfast. I was surprised that we only had to wait a few minutes for a table on Christmas morning; the hotel seemed very busy. The food and service were both excellent, and we all enjoyed our meals. My steak was cooked perfectly.

After breakfast we were still waiting for our room to become ready, so we wandered around the restaurants and shops at Cosmo and checked things out for awhile. After a bit of exploring and picture taking, we decided to head over to Miracle Mile shops, as our room wasn’t ready yet. We ended up getting the text that the room was ready right as we arrived at the shops though. So we made a quick loop through, and after picking up a few things from the ABC store, headed back to the Cosmo and up to our room.

Our room type was a Terrace Suite Fountain View, which are only located in the Chelsea Tower. We were on the 36th floor, and we all really enjoyed the room. It was clean, well kept, and was generally awesome with an amazing view. Here are some pictures:

We had been awake since 4:00am Vegas time and needed a little break, so after a short nap and some relaxing in the room we headed over to the Bellagio to see the Yayoi Kusama infinity mirror installation at the Gallery of Fine Art. We had to wait in a bit of a line, but the installation was well worth the wait. I highly recommend checking it out. We explored the Bellagio for a bit, took some pictures out on the pool deck, and then headed back to Cosmo for some slices of Secret Pizza. I didn’t get any pictures, but we all know what pizza looks like. It was excellent as usual. A little more down time in the room, and it was time to head to the Mirage for the Beatles Love show. We all liked the show, but the 16-year-old is very interested in sound and light production, so he had an especially good time here. My wife and I have seen this show before, so we had some fun just watching our children’s reactions to all the different things happening on the stage.

After the show I was hoping to get a snack at the Carnegie Deli, but they were already closed. Instead we just had a leisurely stroll back to the Cosmo, taking in the night sights and catching a Bellagio fountain show along the way. It was around 1:00 am when we got back to our room, and the others, even the 21-year-old, opted for snacks in the room and bedtime, while I headed to the casino for the first gambling of the “day.”

I had a few small hits, nothing substantial, but enough to keep me gaming for a few hours on just a few bucks. I had quite a few drinks was feeling tired and hungry, since I didn’t get my snack at the Mirage, so I went back up to the room, down a little for the day, ordered some room service, and took a quick shower while waiting. Buffalo wings and chicken soup really hit the spot at 3:00am. Everyone else slept through my room service experience...

We were all moving pretty slowly the next morning and, even with two bathrooms, took until 11:00 am for the four of us to get showered and ready to start the day. We decided on The Henry again for breakfast, but when we got there we all ended up ordering lunch instead. We had to wait almost 40 minutes for a table, so my lovely wife took the 16-year-old to get a coffee and hang out in the lounge area in front of Beauty and Essex. The 21-year-old and I hit the casino for the first time together. He played some video black jack, and I dinked around on the slots. He won a few bucks and I lost a few. When we eventually got our table and ordered, lunch was excellent. We all liked the dishes we ordered.

After lunch Mom and 16-year-old went exploring, while 21-year-old and Dad went back to the casino. I watched the kid play video black jack for awhile; he was doing really well and was up a few hundred. I decided to go play a Top Dollar slot that I spotted over by The Henry earlier and left him at the black jack machine. This is where I had my biggest slot hit yet. In 24 years of Vegas trips I’ve never had a hand pay, and I still didn’t get one, but I did hit a bonus round that was good for $960. I didn’t even know what had happened at first, but the credits just kept climbing and climbing. Took long enough that several strangers were watching by the time it stopped. I’ll have to say, I was pretty excited. I cashed out immediately, as I was suddenly up several hundred for the trip. I went and found my son so I could share my excitement with him, and he was just leaving the black jack machine. Even though he was up a few hundred just minutes ago, now he was walking away even. I gave him some of my winnings and we spent a few more hours in the casino. I was done gambling for the time being, trying to savor my win, but he had some fun with my money. It was really great to spend some time with my kid. It’s been a few years since we had any kind of fun together because he’s been away at college. We eventually got back together with Mom and 16-year-old and went back to the room to get ready for dinner at Morimoto at the MGM.

    31.jpg 32.jpg 33.jpg 34.jpg 35.jpg 36.jpg

We walked from the Cosmo down to MGM, taking in the sights along the way. I misjudged the amount of time it would take to walk there, and we arrived 20 minutes early for our reservation. We were seated immediately anyhow. I’ve been here before; this is one of my lovely wife’s favorite Vegas restaurants, so I knew what to expect, but was still blown away by both the food and the service. We tried a variety of different appetizers, entrees, and sushi rolls. We all ate too much and had a great experience. Both of the boys are pretty adventurous eaters, and it was fun for them to try new things. We were all too full for dessert though, so we paid the check and went on our way.

The plan was to walk up to the Linq to ride the High Roller, but we were all feeling very full from dinner and decided to get a ride. We were going to Lyft, but it turned out that we were right by the MGM entrance to the Monorail and decided to take it for the sake of novelty. A Lyft ride would have been less than half the cost of the Monorail for the four of us, but I guess it was a cool experience. We got off at the Linq stop and made our way through the casino and down to the High Roller. The 16-year-old really seemed to enjoy this experience, but I think his older brother was a bit bored. I think he wanted to get back to the casino, which is exactly what we did after walking back to the Cosmo.

Lovely wife and 16-year-old son headed back up to the room, while 21-year-old son and I went to the casino. We played some roulette, a few slots, and more video black jack. I decided to give the kid a chance to do his own thing. Leaving him at the black jack machine again, I ended up finding an absolute grinder of a slot machine and spent some time there just drinking and people watching. This machine was paying out a small win on almost every spin, and often times the bet was more than the win, but it was enough to keep me going. I walked away even, but got several drinks in the process and had a friendly neighbor to chat with. My son ended up down about $50 of his own money and $100 of mine, but really seemed to be enjoying himself. Maybe a little too much! I ended the trip up around $800, but gambled quite a bit less than normal. My boy and I headed back to room and crashed pretty late.

We all slept in again and started the day out slowly. Coffee and pastries in the room for breakfast. We had to check out at noon, and it took us all that long to get ready to leave. After checking out and dropping the bags off, we went to China Poblano for lunch. This place was great--very interesting concept. We ordered and shared a number of dishes, and we didn’t find anything that we didn’t like. It was all delicious, and the service was fantastic too. We had such a leisurely lunch here that it was time to get our bags and make our way to the airport when we finished. Once again nobody left any room for dessert, but we did binge on some Ethel M chocolates at the airport while waiting for our flight to board.

It seems like every trip I take to Vegas is better than the last, and this was no exception. This was my best trip yet! I got some quality time in with my lovely wife and both of our wonderful sons, ate some world class food, saw a fun show, and I even had a nice slot win. We really enjoyed our fancy suite and stay at the Cosmopolitan. I think we are going to start taking the boys every year for Christmas.

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed the report.

What a great read this trip report was, thank you for sharing it! You all seemed to have a really great time! Loved the photos and so glad you came home a winner! I will be taking my 21 year old to Vegas this year in December and it will be a good time as we have talked about doing it since she was young.

You DO realize you were betting $20 a spin when you won that $960?
