I am heading to Vegas end of March, flying from Ireland and have hired a car in Vegas back in 2013 at the airport.

Now looking to get a car for 2 days, head downtown for 1 night and basically do some shopping, offstrip food places maybe a station casino etc. Bit of Fun.

Is the Hertz FB location okay? Or should I just go the airport?

Also do i need to be aware of any scams, do I need additional insurance? In Europe its a complex and dangerous transaction where youre better getting additional insurance as they try to upcharge, claim you damaged the car and your Credit card is at risk.

Any help welcomed.

I will be at ParkMGM and would walk to FB, also would have happily walked to the airport as I will have jetlag and want some early morning steps.

I think there is an Avis location directly at parkmgm which would be way more convenient. Insurance is really only a question you and your risk tolerance can answer. You can valet at 4queens for free.

There is also Hertz rental outlets at Venetian/ Palazzo and Wyn/Encore that may be more convenient. Cons to renting from the casino locations are more limited hours of pickup and a more limited selection of vehicles.

Cons to picking up at Rental Center is sometimes depending on what’s going on they can be limited or out of vehicles. It doesn’t happen often but I have encountered that. End of March is Spring Break time and a time I would anticipate possibly high demand on rental cars at the airport. We arrived during Spring Break a few years ago and neither Hertz or Alamo had any vehicles. Hertz easily had 100 people waiting for vehicles and Alamo had maybe 10 people waiting. Not saying it’s a definite issue but could be.

As far as insurance I’ve always heard that for visitors from outside the US that prearranging insurance before arrival is the way to go. Maybe somebody else can weigh in on this.

I’m from Europe and last trips we always rent from Hertz in FB. We love it! Really easy and when you book from Europe, all is included. Last time we were in our car just 5 minutes after we got to the desk.

The biggest con to renting at the airport are the ridiculous fees and surcharges that generally don't apply away from the airport.

  • Happy birthday to me
Make sure you book using the Hertz site from your home country so you can get all the insurance you need in advance. It will be very expensive to pay for insurance at the counter.

This is universal for anyone from outside the US (except Canada?).

It's a very far walk from Park MGM to Fontainebleau (just to rent a car). I've rented from the Avis at Park MGM before and everything went very smoothly. You may even be able to return it to the car rental center at the end of your trip. As for insurance, as a Canadian, I made the car rental booking on my credit card and I'm covered for the insurance through the credit card company.

The main issue can be if you need primary liability insurance, which usually isn't covered by credit card coverage.

Credit card policies usually only cover the damage to the rental vehicle that the loss damage waiver would cover, not what your personal auto insurance policy would cover for any damage or injuries to other people. US auto insurance polices, and I think Canadian policies cover liability while driving any car in the US, but European policies likely won't.

No issues with getting car you hired. Or them saying you scrathed it etc. I know in Europe you need to take pictures and all before you leave the site. Last time i got a car in LV we just walked and picked our car and keys in ignition. Way more relaxed.

Last time we hired a mustang. Told us it was out of stock did we want an upgrade, we declined and a bit annoyed. Then we walked to the car park and a few mustangs there and drove one out. The lies they tell you i now expect

I book cars every trip and have booked to collect from hotels.

Book before you leave Ireland and book online. Travelsupermarket.com is the comparison site I use but I tend to end up booking from autoeurope.com. I have also used Discovercars.com and transaction went through smoothly. All rentals come with all insurances (unless you book when on US soil) so all you have to pay at the kiosk is the deposit, once at the airport they see my NI driving licence and dont even bother trying to upsell these days (but I book small SUVs which is probably why).

Make sure when searching you search for "Las Vegas - ALL LOCATIONS" if you want hotels.

I did a few. Booking.com.was cheapest. Seems in Ireland we get insurance free..i may pay an extra €5 a day for cover for lost keys, windows, undercarriage tyres etc. Paid €96 for a premium car for 2 days. Fontainblue. Happy out.

Same. We did this a few months ago. Only downside may be selection of cars, they're not going to have as many to choose from.
