    My Trip Report

I’m going to try to make this pretty short (but ya’ll know how I get), seeing as it’s Friday, and the lack of buffoonery on the trip will make for some dry reading anyway….

    The Setup:

The wife and I stayed at The Mirage (her favorite) Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday night. Made the reservation through the poker room for $99 a night… first time I’ve done that… the deal is, you get a reduced rate in exchange for 6 hours a day of poker (it’s cumulative.. you don’t have to put in six every day). We saved $50 a night, so I kept close track of my wins / losses, just out of curiosity. I would have played the same amount anyway, but I wanted to see how it worked out. Oh, and we drove this time.

    The Casino:

Just a couple of things of note: First is that they’ve taken out all of the black jack pits at the back of the casino (near the restaurants), and replaced them with…. drum roll please…. slot machines. Super. Second, they’ve started to do some renovations, which we heard will include a club, a bar, and some other stuff. They had already completed a new High Roller lounge and high roller gaming area… both looked very nice, but it’s just more floor space not for my use, so… whatever.

    The Dining:

Had some really good meals, including Mon Ami Gabi (New York steak with blue cheese…dayam), Magiano’s little Italy, the buffet at Wynn, and Cheesecake Factory (say it with me…. white chocolate chunk / macadamia nut cheesecake with lots of fresh whipped cream…. Good God). The Wynn buffet is in my top three, nudging Aladdin’s down to #4.

    The Gambling:

Lots of poker, in one of my very favorite rooms. The World Series of Poker is going on, and the Mirage room had a LOT of players in it. Every table I played at had at least one wsop player at it. As always, I met some really nice people, and had a good time playing my favorite game.

I played at Least six hours each day, with the net as follows:

    Monday: - $30

    Tuesday: -$40

Wednesday: broke out the lucky chonies ( http://www.webundies.com/rm55945.htm ) and finished + $110

So, + $40 for the trip, and we saved $50 a night getting the poker room rate. I was happy.

Of course, while I was fighting the good fight against wsop players, my wife was making about $500 at the black jack tables. yeah, yeah, I know.

Best Hand: AK of hearts in the big blind… about seven callers, I raise when it gets to me, and everyone stays in. AK on the flop. I bet, three people call. A Ten on the turn, making four to the straight… I check, one of the callers bets… great, I’m screwed. All three of us call. The river brings another Ace, giving me an aces full of kings full house… The Nuts. I check, and player number two Bets Into the straight! Straight folds, and the other woman bellyaches for a full minute before calling. Before I can stop myself, I say, “well, if you didn’t like that bet, you’re gonna Hate this… I raiseâ€. First bettor calls, second folds, I scoop. Damn I love poker.

Worst Hand: pocket Aces in the small blind. It gets raised before me, and I reraise, making it three bets to go, pre-flop. Big blind and two others call. The board comes all rags, and I’m betting it all the way. On the river the big blind raises me…. because of course her suited 3 6 has paired. Ooch.

Various poker notes: Over the last two years I have seen a steady increase in the amount of women playing poker, which I personally view as a good thing. I also see the average age of the players getting lower… also good. On Tuesday night I played at a table with Six women… not surprisingly, it was a very pleasant table.

On the last night, the table behind me was full of wsop players, playing 4/8. The smack flying was world class and hilarious. At one point, this guy yells out, “AWWWW YEEAHHH!! I LOVE THE RIVERRRRR!!! What?! What were you even doing in this hand with ace nine?!!†Beautiful. At another point someone at the table just starts braying like a jackass…literally… “HEEE-HAWWW HEEE-HAWW†hahahahaha

The Show: We had tickets to We Will Rock You at Paris. The show based on the music of Queen. I guess I just had a much different expectation of what the show was. I was expecting loud, high energy, you know… ROCK! That is not what this show is. I remember thinking it felt like “Siegfried and Roy meet the high school drama clubâ€. I’m not going to hammer it…it just wasn’t what I was hoping for. Boy was I glad I got the tickets for half price.

Geneal Stuff: Did the usual other stuff with the wife.. went shopping at Ceasar’s, Fashion Show, and Aladdin. Checked out the Wynn, which seemed a lot like the Bellagio with a better color scheme. The astro turf outside was nothing less than tackie.

    Alright…. Back to work.

    Terry,

Good read. Always nice to take the wife away for a little holiday. That's a husband's duty I was told a long time ago by a few fellows I know....:D

Did you see any homeless Raiders downtown hangin' out the the guy who carries around the blue "kidney cooler?? My bad....:evillaugh

Glad it was an enjoyable trip for you and the Mrs. and that you came out ahead a little in the loot department.

Always nice to make the wife happy. Makes your everyday life a little better.

Now it's time for a "real" trip for some drinking and everything else! ;)

You know, I've noticed a disturbing trend of weird things happening when my wife and I go to Vegas....

One year, we drove back during the El Nino storms....waves were crashing Over the southbound 101 onto the northbound lanes... THAT had my full attention!

One year we drove back the day after George Bush's first election, with all of the mayhem of the Florida recount

One year it was those horrific fires in San Diego

This year, the Supreme Court re-writes the Fifth Ammendment of the Constitution!! WTF?!!

    Terry;
Glad to see you score some good wifey points. Those always come in handy.
I agree on the turf outside of Wynn, EXTREMELY!!! tacky.
I also agree with Vegas Tonya,,, Stop bringing the wife to Vegas.
Save Vegas for yourself and take wifeypoo to tahoe,Reno,Pala,Rincon, Laughlin, etc...
But, I think you do better in Vegas when she isn't with you.
either way, glad you had some fun anyway.
