They can't refuse you for reasons other than safety, including drunk and disorderly. I had one whine once when I cabbed from Rio to Palms in the wee hours but shut up when I handed him $20. Once when staying at Rio, I was approaching the cab stand and told a Gold Coast Security Officer the cabbie was going to be pissed because I was only going to Rio but no way I was walking alone (again the wee hours). He said he'd run me over, got the vehicle and dropped me off.
I took a cab from Harrahs to Venetian once in August hauling luggage to change hotels. I apologized and he said no worries, you were going to be my last fare, didn't turn on the meter and absolutely refused to take any money...no tip...would NOT take it. You get all kinds of cabbies.
At Detroit Airport once, we'd done a park n fly at a local hotel. We were exhausted on returning from Vegas with a 2.5 hour drive ahead. The shuttle wasn't coming so we decided to take a cab. When I told him the hotel, he went all soup **** on me. He told me, and I quote "You must to take the free shuttle". Well I was tired and he picked the wrong girl. I stuck my head out the windiw, looked at the roof of the cab and said "That sign says taxi, is this a taxi?" He said "yes". "Good, then take me to whatever hotel". He repeats, "No, you must to take the free shuttle". I replied "I don't want to take the free fucking shuttle, now shut up and drive". I was an angry sleep deprived person and to add insult to injury (not particularly proud of this but he pissed me off) I didn't tip and told him what I would have tipped if he hadn't been a prick.

I've done short trips before, usually the driver just complains about it.

Yeah, that I can understand. He'd get in trouble for open container if the cops stopped him. And, in Texas, that's not a small fine.

I am the person to which this happened.
Kodi and I came out of the Plaza, went over to the first car at the cab stand and asked to go to El Cortez.
He said " it is not far, you can walk it."
I said " it is far if you have a crippled foot"

Then we said " So you won't take us?"

And he said " no ask the other guys".

We approached the other two drivers who were talking to each other and asked the same question.
One just looked down at his phone.

The other very, very reluctantly agreed to take us.

I am really mad at myself that I didn't write down the cab number of that first guy. I should have reported him.

We are in Vegas for another week so more cab incidents may occur.

    Thanks for the current rules.
I guess I will have to fight the next guy who refuses me.

I stayed many times at the Orleans and not wanting to wait for the free shuttle I found out the shortest cab ride was to NYNY, about $6. Cabbies that groaned got $7. Those that didn't - most of them - got $10. The guy who tried to take me North up Arville so he could go East on Flamingo then South on LV Blvd, well let's say he tried but didn't complete the route. I probably have that a$$hole's license picture in my archive somewhere and I bet he still remembers me.

Never a refusal, even from Palazzo to Seizures when I was a bit too wobbly to safely walk.

Cabbies hate short rides for some reason but just tip them well and they are usually cool about it. Only got in trouble once when we were cabbing it from Caesars to Aria on a busy weekend. The driver simple simply said no and drove away with the back door open after getting directions from the valley guy. He drove like 50 feet closed the door and tried to get back in the cab line, the valley guy went nuts chased him down started yelling to never come back etc. Super weird experience but we just got the next cab and he was super happy since the tip we gave was more then the fare itself.

Several years ago I was in Vegas with a friend who had a broken foot and was in a walking cast. We got in a cab at Caesar's and told the driver we were headed to Bellagio - just the next property. He freaked out and told us to get out. My friend got in his face and told him to drive or she was reporting him to the taxi authority. He did drive, but was cursing a blue streak the ENTIRE time. They don't like the short rides as they have to get to the back of the taxi line to wait for their next fare after already waiting at the back of the last line. I'm not even slightly ashamed to say we paid, but left Zero tip for a ride the guy cursed us out the whole time even though my friend had the obvious mobility issue.

I find this thread "of interest", as most cab-related threads on here are about how "visitors" will do ANYTHING to avoid getting in one!!!

If this happens again, start recording video on your phone and ask the driver again, if he won't take you. Then make sure you get the license plate and everything on camera and tell him that you are going to be providing the footage to the taxi and limousine commission along with your report. And then do it.

This is why I HATE taxis in Las Vegas. I will pay for a Presidential car service sedan which is much more expensive before I pay for a taxi. It is just not worth the aggravation.

Now that Uber is in Las Vegas, you can also put the Uber app on your phone and get a car that way - and bypass the taxi nastiness altogether. They should be grateful for ALL business, not try to cheat fares by long hauling and then treating customers like dirt because the trip isn't profitable enough. If they don't like it, they should find another line of work.

Uber was only in Vegas a week or so before being shut down by the courts. They are trying to get the law changed to allow them to operate but it hit a snag

what is wrong with taking the bus?!!! Really, $20 for an unlimited 3 day pass. Take the bus everywhere when I'm there. I do avoid the Deuce when all possible.

It was my understanding that the law in Vegas was "Everywhere but behind the wheel" for open containers. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've always had open containers in cabs in Vegas.

    Here ya go:

Q: Is it legal to consume alcohol on the street and/or in a cab?

A: When it comes to alcohol consumption, this city has some of the nation's least restrictive rules. We checked with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Dept. and they confirmed that it's fine to wander down the Strip –- or any other street in town –- openly swigging your beer or sipping a cocktail; no brown paper bag required. It's also absolutely fine to bring your drink into a casino, but generally, it's not acceptable to take a drink from outside into other licensed properties, such as bars or clubs, which make their money from serving their own liquor. Of course, no property is too thrilled if you try to take out a drink in their glassware, but most are happy to supply a to-go cup if you want to leave before you've finished.

Drinking while in a moving vehicle is another story. According to Nevada's Open Container law (NRS 484.448), it's "unlawful for a person to drink an alcoholic beverage while he is driving or in actual physical control of a motor vehicle upon a highway" or "for a person to have an open container of an alcoholic beverage within the passenger area of a motor vehicle while the motor vehicle is upon a highway." However, this law exempts "a motor vehicle which is designed, maintained or used primarily for the transportation of persons for compensation, or to the living quarters of a house coach or house trailer." In plain English, legally it's okay to drink while you're the passenger in a cab, shuttle, bus, or limo -- provided that it's a fare-charging vehicle -- or in the back of an RV (if your cabbie says no, quote him the statute). Some companies have their own restrictions, however: For example, for the safety and comfort of their passengers, the city's Citizens Area Transport (CAT) buses have a no eating/drinking/smoking rule, and alcoholic beverages are not allowed on the Strip monorail. Note that it's also unlawful to drink alcohol: (a) Within one thousand feet of the store from which liquor, beer and wine was purchased in closed containers, except on residential property; (b) In any parking lot; (c) On the property or premises of the establishment from which the closed container of liquor, beer or wine was purchased.

Many things. Although someone could post "what is wrong with taking a taxi" or "what is wrong with renting a car" or "what is wrong with hiring a rickshaw".

    It's called preference.
