I prefer real life blackjack to a machine. Give me a human dealing, the camaraderie of everyone at the table against the house and some of the best odds for any game in Vegas. Even the worse tables have less then 1% house advantage. With those great odds however you have to bet a lot for a while to get any comps.

I get what you're saying. Another person's play has no real effect on your outcome.

The nuance to that statement is, "in the long run".

One must have the bankroll to spend the time at the table required to absorb the variance of the game, including the variance presented into the game by those who don't understand strategy.

But I'll stand by the original statement.

As for "doing the rest of us a favor" by staying away from the BJ tables, if my play has no overall effect on yours, what do you care? If I choose to sit down at a BJ table and gamble my money, I will. If you choose to make a stupid play, you'll not hear a peep out of me, because if I'm playing, I'm playing with the intention of doing so intelligently, riding out variance, and above all, having fun.

True, but OP said he could bet $25. And there is free bet bj as an option too. Much better than that damn sports bar VP. A shame too, I like mirage.

Why do I want such players to stay away? I get tired of listening to them bitch about correct plays I have made, as if their incompetence is somehow my fault. This phenomenon occurs most often when it is a correct play to hit soft seventeen, or (God forbid!) soft eighteen. "You took the dealer's bust card, wah, wah, wah."

My concern has nothing to do with whether or not things even out in the long run. A decision on a hand is as short term as it gets. The only person I can think of who has any legitimate reason to be unhappy about players taking extra cards might be a card counter in a strong positive count who is hoping for one more hand before the shuffle.

Although there are downers, other players can be a lot of fun at the blackjack table, especially because we all share a common interest. This is very different from playing poker.

Really appreciate all the responses. I guess like poker, whether to play BJ or VP comes down to game selection. If the particular rules/odds/HA are good then it's worth playing. And totally agree with mikeyvegas1 that the games with the best player odd are the worst to accumulate comps with. If I wanted to play for comps I'd go for the slots, lord knows my wife does. :)

I know there's good BJ at Mirage for $25 and up. I haven't really looked into the pay schedules for VP there or at the Venetian/Palazzo. I'd imagine that MLife properties aren't going to have the best VP as a poster intimated to earlier. Maybe this will get me into the CET properties a bit more for VP. I think I'd prefer a bar top where TV, drinks and friendly conversation is readily available. I do like the latter when playing BJ, but the last time I played it seemed the table wads a parade or one belligerent/annoying drunk after the next. I guess the same could happen at a VP bar, but at least in Vegas there are plenty of places to go play if the one you're at is not fun.

Either game will have swings. It all boils down to which game you like bette . I would give both a try until you find a comfort zone. Both games are great at making your money last a while. Video poker takes a lot of practice to master the different games and knowing the pay tables is key. There are plenty of training apps for smartphones.

    Remember these two things:

Video poker - Always check the pay tables (there is an app for that also). Each machine is different.
Blackjack - Always read the felt (table rules) before you play. Each table could have different rules.

    Hope this helps.
