Pretty old now, but worth a watch if you want a few hours of Vegas related entertainment (though I believe a lot of it was staged!)

It’s awful, but you can’t look away. 99% of it is staged and poorly done. We binged watched it on Wednesday and laughed

I just wrapped up "Blood Aces: the Benny Binion Story". A very good read. He was a pretty fair illusionist, embracing a sort of Robin Hood persona on one hand. He was, on the other hand, a gangster and didn't cotton to competition - in Vegas nor in Dallas. The book goes into a lot of detail about his legal issues, constant threat of indictment or winding up dead at the hand of some Dallas boys he crossed long ago. It also talks about the original early days of the WSOP.

Good read. In October I went by his ranch. Nothing there but nostalgia, but still cool.

Binion's was doomed once Jack Binion sold out to his sister. She immediately implemented a bunch of cost cutting measures, and screwed up the WSOP, too. Things went downhill from there. Basically, she managed to piss off all the gamblers, and all of the employees.

It's never been the same since.

I was playing a lot of poker back then, so I spent a lot of time at Binion's when all that mess was going on. Jack was old school, and ran the casino the same way his father did. He believed in giving the gambler a "fair" deal. Good cheap food, cheap drinks, and cheap rooms. And he didn't believe in sticking it to the gambler too hard, with crazy house rules on the slots or table games.

Binion's had a loyal following of gamblers. And many of the employees loved it there, and had been there 20 or 30 years, or even longer. It was easy to see all of that slipping away as soon as Jack left.

I see Amazon has the whole series. As I recall, this aired on TLC and they pulled the plug on the series about 4-5 episodes in due to poor reviews and low ratings. There was another series around that time called "Sin City Rules" that was even worse. It was an ultra-trashy "Real Housewives" ripoff.

They pulled it after two. I think they made a second season for a Canadian channel. Oh god, I forgot how bad the Sin City show was.

Never heard of Sin City Rules, but now I will look for it.

As for Confidential, it was ridiculously bad. But with no commercials, its a mildly amusing way to pass the time while also doing something else.

There were no seasons. Basically in the US it never made a full run, and in Canada it did. (It was a Canadian produced show). Does anyone here recognize anyone that still (or ever worked) at Binions? Is that steakhouse
Maître D' for real? That dude was sure adamant about his steaks. I looked up the menu online and that meat is not cheap. Anyone eaten there? Is it worth the price?

Granted that it's probably been at least 3 years since I've been there, but here's my take -- the Binion's steakhouse definitely has good meat and an old-school coolness which is almost extinct these days. Definitely worth it if you're a person who may enjoy that classic/non-trendy kind of vibe. I'd personally like to get back there again for sure.

    :peace:

Yes, several years ago, so not too relevant. We both enjoyed out meal, service and view.

Thought that show made Binion’s look completely and utterly amateurish. Can’t believe they thought that would be good PR.

I thought a couple of security people came off as professional and the new cook in the steakhouse looked like a good employee. However, when the casino operations manager, Glen(?), said that his philosophy ‘was to surround himself with people that think exactly like him’ it was yet more evidence to me why Binion’s has been and continues to be so close to the abyss.
