Not knowing anything at all about Vegas, we arrived the same night as Paris grand opening and got stuck in Strip traffic logjam for what seemed forever. Plus, we didn't even know where we were going anyway.
Did not realize you could enter casinos, even if you weren't staying there or a gambler.
Basically, no preparation whatsoever and being totally overwhelmed by the experience. Stayed overnite at a flophouse-type place a couple blocks off Strip and left town soon after getting up.
    We were idiots.

Our first visit was in 1988 when we stayed at the Sahara. We didn't use buses or taxis and walked everywhere. We walked down to the strip stopping at all the hotels on the way including the Dunes and the Sands. When we got to Caesars we thought it was the end of the strip and didn't go any farther.

The only gambling we did was when I played a 3 reel machine putting in 3 x 25c at at time. I had one 25c left and didn't know whether to go and get more change or just play it. I didn't know that you could call for change. I played the 25c and won $100, but it would have been so much more if I had put in 3.

We didn't return until 17 years later and were much more prepared due to the internet. However we didn't get player's cards as we didn't think we would play enough to warrant them. The only regret that trip was that we didn't play enough slots as we were so busy doing everything else.

Mistakes I made on our first trip would be:
    - I drank a lot of water... all of it bought from the Ti gift shop. Very expensive, but then there didn't seem to be that many places to get cheap water nearby back then.
    - Signing up for player cards. I only signed up for one from all the casinos visited.

There might be more but then when I stroll down memory lane and think of trips in the past I look to remember the good times and fun I had, not try to pick away and find problems and issues that may or may not have been there.

Good thread. Didn't understand how to shop for deals on hotels and way overpaid a standard rate at MGM. Also had no idea how far it was from casino to casino and didn't not have appropriate footwear

Didin't put on sunscreen at the Luxor pool in the middle of the Vegas summer combined with heavy drinking at the pool.

My back and shoulders were purple they were burned so bad and we played golf in the 100 degree heat the next day.

(I know, I'm from Florida. I should know better. Damn alcohol!)

Buying VIP club passes from a dude on the street...

    Using the ATM...

Blowing my BR the first night...

Thinking I would be better at gambling than everyone else (typical engineer mentality)...

Walking from Bellagio to Luxor for slushies...with two chicks in 6 inch heels...we thought the slushies were specific to Luxor

Drinking TWO huge slushies...worst hangover ever

Planning to work on a senior design project while in vegas...

    Oh how I have grown

Waited too long to return from downtown to the strip on NYE. Traffic was all backed up ended up getting off the bus with a bunch of other people near Las Vegas Hilton and walking back to the Flamingo.

I thought the lady at the bar actually found me attractive and wanted to get to know me better.

My return flight was 6:30 AM.

I didn't know you were supposed to tip the dealers.

We were lucky, no real surprises.

We split the stay downtown and Strip.
We drove in so could do whatever we wanted.
We'd gambled for years so kinda knew what to expect.
We did underestimate how it would get under our skin.

It's comforting to be part of a group, even if it's a group of dumb rookies.

We booked the trip as a package. I didn't pay close enough attention to the VP pay tables and played a couple short pays. I was obvious when counting cards and drew the attention of the pit critters.

My biggest mistake was going to Vegas not knowing a SINGLE thing about the place.... I had never had an interest in going 8 years ago. My wife's boss decided to take their office (and SO's) for the weekend. All I knew was she booked us a room at the Flamingo. We got there late on a Friday night. After having dinner as a group she said we could all go our own ways. She said she was going downtown if we wanted to go. My thought was, why go downtown, so we stayed on the strip.... Little did I know what I was missing. Now when we go to Vegas, we spend about half our trip downtown.

And the other regret was only taking $300 bank roll for that weekend.

Back in the day I think the Heinekens were a quarter apiece.

The shortest distance between my bladder and the restroom appeared to be through the middle of the tables.......not a good idea....tossed out of SOF at 21 and I didn't even know why.......:nono:

Took three episodes during three different summer trips to Vegas to relize not to mess with the summer sun and heat in Vegas.

#1 Burnt the bottom of our feet walking from our chairs to the pool at the Mirage in mid July. I thought all the sandles and flip-flops parked by the pool were from people worried about "germs". Ended extended walking for the rest of the trip.

#2 GF took a dizzy spell at MB pool the following July. Had to be recused by pool personal, they reconizied the signs, gave her shade and fluids. I thought she was over-reacting. Still get accused of not caring, seven years later.

#3 The next July, thinking that I was tougher then her, took all that the Vegas sun and "Captain Morgan" could dish out. Spent the last two days of vacation like a beaten pup. Between chills and fever, plus unending "I told you so(s)...", I (We) got it, there is no summer fun in Vegas without respect for the residence boss, the sun.

Been back every year since with no problems, "All things in moderation, except Gatoraide.
