    My Trip Report

Hey y'all! It's been a while due to life and the pandemic. We got back last week and I owe you fine folks a trip report. I've certainly enjoyed some of yours over the years. So, here we go!

    Aug 3rd
We left the three kids and two dogs with my sister and her husband and headed out to Vegas. We were flying first class on miles. Normally, we fly coach - so the flying was a lot less stressful and uncomfortable for us than usual. Our departing flight was delayed by a couple of hours...but eventually we got to Vegas around midnight Vegas time. Our bodies felt like it was 3AM. So, we were tired.

We had booked Kaptyn car service from the airport to the hotel. The driver had monitored out flight delays and he was there right on time. It was my first time in a Tesla Model X. Cool car for sure. Overall experience was excellent and the cost is not all that much (~$70 if memory serves). Our driver stopped off for us to buy a pack of bottled water, then took us to Mandalay Bay where our trip would begin. We tipped him, went to the room, took a quick look at our cool view, unpacked and crashed.

I was attending an I.T. conference the 4th and 5th. My wife and I went down and had breakfast at the Seabreeze Cafe. The food was good. Service was great.

I went on to my conference, and the wife went to the pool. I was not feeling great around lunch, so I grabbed a couple of pre-packed sandwiches from the little market near the guest elevators and the wife and I met in the room for lunch.

A little while into our lunch, I realized we had a great view of Janet Airlines. That was a fun surprise.

That afternoon I got to feeling better. I went down for my first run at some BlackJack. I got in on an empty $25 3/2 dealer hits soft 17 table for $2k and eventually left with a $500 in chip (down $1,500). Not a great start!

That evening, we headed over to Bellagio to see the sights and have dinner at Prime. The conservatory was beautiful as usual.

Dinner at Prime was great. We enjoyed the starter bread. I got the NY Strip and my wife got the Filet. Both were excellent. We shared sides of mushroom and potatoes. The included steak sauces were fantastic.

After dinner, we hit up the Bellagio Craps tables for some quick fun. I got into a $25 table for $500 and left with $650 (up $150).

We enjoyed a quick fountain show, then cabbed back to Mandalay Bay and called it a night.

Overall, it was a great day. Gambling results as of the end of the day - down $1,350.

    Aug 5th

We woke up and had breakfast at the Seabreeze Cafe again. The 5th was another conference day for me. My wife had some spa plans at the Mandalay Bay spa. We had some time to kill after breakfast, so we hit up some quick Craps at Mandalay Bay. Bought in for $1k and walked away with $1,250. Not a bad start for the morning!

I went to my conference, and she went to the spa. She enjoyed it overall. She has been to a bunch of them in Vegas. She said it was very solid, but not as nice as the Bellagio or what was the Mandarin Oriental.

We decided to meet for lunch at the Noodle Shop in Mandalay Bay. Before lunch, I stuck a $100 bill in a slot machine, and played it down to zero. The food and service at the Noodle Shop were both great.

After lunch, we hit up some quick BlackJack. I got in for $1,500 and got out with $1,000 ($500 loss).

I went back to the conference for a while.

That evening we cabbed down to Resorts World to check it out. Here are our impressions.
    • It's big, and new and fancy.
    • The decor is not our favorite. We like the Bellagio and V/P the best in Vegas. It seems to lack a unifying theme.
    • We did like Gatsby's, the sports bar, and the street food area. Those are all cool spaces.
We also gambled a bit while we were there.
    • Won $300 at Cramps.
    • Lost $300 at Roulette
    • Won $25 slots
    • Lost $100 slots.

Overall, it was another great day. Gambling results as of the end of the day - down $450 more. Running trip total - down $1,775.

Aug 6th - Blackjack personal best!

Today was hotel move day. Now that my conference was over, it was time to move hotels down to the Palazzo. We have always enjoyed walking through V/P and hanging out there but we had never stayed there. So, we were looking forward to that. We woke up and went down to grab some coffee and to play a bit more at Mandalay Bay before leaving. We wanted to kill some time before we left. We figured we would not be able to check in yet at Palazzo. I had registered for the thing where you can attempt to pay extra ($75?) for early check in...but we did not get it. So, we expected to need to check bags and wait once we got there.

We played a bit of Double Top Dollar. In for $100 - out for $0 ($100 loss).

Next we played a bit of Craps. In for $1k, out for $725 ($275 loss). It was not going great at Craps and the guy we were playing with was really grouchy - so we probably were not there 20 min. I hate playing with people who are super grouchy - in this case banging chips on the table, huffing and puffing at every loss etc. Hey - no one loves losses but calm down dude. So, we just left him to his misery and moved on. Ha!

Around 10:30AM, we went up and got our bags and grabbed a cab to Palazzo. Unfortunately, we did this just after Vegas PD had shut the entire strip down for an event related to a police officer who was killed. We ended up stuck in the cab for quite a while. Ultimately, the cab driver ended up dropping us out near TI and we took the bridge over the road to Palazzo. I'm very sorry the officer lost his life. I'm not aware of the circumstances, but it was obviously a tragedy.

We rolled our bags over the bridge and into Palazzo. Fortunately, the very helpful check in person was able to upgrade us to a nicer room for ~$30 day more. So, in the end that worked out great and we were able to check right in. We dropped our bags, unpacked and headed down to Grande Lux for some lunch. While waiting for a table at lunch, we played some slots.

We played Double Top Dollar - in for $100 - out for $200 ($100 win).

Lunch was decent - not the best we have had at Grande Lux - but it was ok.

After lunch we played some Craps. In for $1,000 - out for $1,000. We played quite a while and at one point I was up ~$600. Should have stopped then. Ended up even - every gamblers second favorite outcome :).

After that, we went up to the room to chill for a bit.

After that we decided to walk over to Wynn for a bit. I played $100 3/2 dealer hits soft 17 Blackjack for a while. In for $1,500 out for $2,100 ($600 gain). My wife loves it when I play at the Wynn. She does not play but she says the people watching is amazing. We played at the corner table and she loved it. Obviously, I had a good time too. Wynn dealers are generally nice to chat with.

After that we walked back over to the Palazzo for dinner. We had reservations at Brera. It was so good! Highly recommend.

    Brera1.JPEG Brera2.JPEG Brera3.JPEG Brera4.JPEG

After such a nice dinner we went in search of a good BlackJack table at Palazzo. It was Friday night and all of the tables on the floor had crummy rules (6/5 etc). I walked into the high limit room and found a $200 table with good rules (3/2 - dealer stays on soft 17). No one was playing, so I asked the guy running that area if he had a $100 table by chance. He said "Give me a moment..." and walked over to speak to someone else. He came back and said he could lover the limit and let me play $100 since they were so slow. Woo hoo! So, we started playing.

I bought in for $1k initially. Eventually, I ran through that and bought in for another $2,000. We played for quite a while and were running roughly even (back to $3k). The manager and the dealer were super nice and we were having a nice time. Eventually, my wife got tired and decided to head up to the room. Not five minutes later perhaps the greatest Blackjack run of my life unfolded. As I started to get ahead I started playing $200 hand. A couple of times just for fun I played a $500 hand. What a rush! Within a matter of about 30 min, I was up to about $7k total.

Eventually, I pushed $6k into a pile and decided I would not walk away with less than that. So, I played for a while longer. It was a great - really fun run. I walked away as planned for $6k ($3k win). I thanked the manager and the dealer for dropping the limit and giving me the best Blackjack session of my life. I had been hooking them up with dealer bets left and right the whole way, so we were all really having fun. Next time I am back in Vegas, I'll be back to the Palazzo high limit room to look for my new friends to see if they can hook me up with another run.

Overall, it was another great day. Gambling results as of the end of the day - up $3,325! Running trip total - up $1,550! Woo hoo!

Aug 7th - Blackjack personal worst!

Saturday was to be our last full day in Vegas and we wanted to do a bit of exploring as well as do some of our favorite Vegas things before heading home. We started out with breakfast at Mon Ami Gabi. No Vegas trip is complete without at least one meal at MAG. As usual - it was fantastic.

    Mag1.JPEG Mag2.JPEG

After breakfast, we walked up to Cosmo. We walked around a bit. I lost $40 in slots.

We then walked over to Caesars Palace. We wanted to walk through the shopping etc. We did that. We got some special gifts for our kids - which they were really surprised by. Nice win!

Next we decided we wanted to head up to Park MGM. We wanted to see Eataly (thanks to YouTube videos by Travel Ruby). It looks awesome. We were stuffed from MAG, but on our next trip I am sure we will be back to Eataly for at least one meal. What Park MGM has done there is very cool.

After that we headed over to Aria. We walked around to see the sights etc. We wanted to have lunch at Posh Burger (thanks to YouTube videos by TheTrooper97). It was great. We played a few slots - in for $100 our for $0.

After that we decided to head back to the Palazzo to chill for a bit. After chilling for a bit we decided to walk back over to the Wynn to play a bit more Blackjack. I bought in at a $100 3/2 dealer hits soft 17 table for $1,000. I lost that and bought in for $2,000 more. Over the next 30 min or so we went on an absolutely terrible run where I lost all of that as well. Sheesh! In for $3k out for $0. I'm pretty sure that's a personal worst. We shut the gambling down and headed back over to Palazzo. We just hung out in the room for a bit and relaxed.

Around 8PM we went back down to Mercato Della Pescheria for dinner and shared a Pizza and Chicken dish. They were both very good.
    Mercato.JPEG

After dinner we were feeling tired. I was tempted to take one more shot at gambling. However, that "last night in Vegas" gambling run never seems to work out for me. At least once or twice it has left me in a really bad mood and my poor wife has had to fly home with grouchy, sleepy me. Honestly, I was also still feeling the sting of that $3k loss. So, we just went back to the room and got some rest.

Oh yeah - here is a view from our Palazzo room. We enjoyed it!
    Palazzo.jpeg

Overall, it was another great fun day in Vegas! Gambling was terrible...but that's how it is some times. Results as of the end of the day - down $3,140! Running trip total - down $1,590.

    Aug 8th and summary

We woke up on the morning of the 8th, checked out and headed to the airport. Travel going home was non-eventful - which was great. My wife got this great pic (below) from the plane on the way home.

Overall, it was a great trip. For me there was one thing made a big difference in how much I enjoyed this trip. I thought very differently about my bankroll. Previously, I've taken money I could afford to lose. However, I didn't really go into those previous trips expecting to lose most of it. This time, I told my wife ahead of time if I lost every penny of the bank roll I set aside for this trip, I'd be ok with it. That was basically the expectation I set for myself.

I really like playing Craps and Blackjack. They are fun and if they are played correctly, they have decent odds. However in the end the house still has an edge. They have an essentially unlimited bankroll. Both of those games have wild swings. So over time, the likely outcome is loosing money. Trip after trip I have proved this. Ha! Ultimately, framing the bankroll that way really helped me see things a bit differently. Frankly, it helped me have a lot more fun.

If you've made it this far - thanks for reading! Good luck on your future Vegas adventures. Thanks to all of you who post for your trip reports - I've sure enjoyed reading them over the years. Thanks especially to Sonya for providing a place for us to all share our stories!

Thanks for taking the time to write that up! Sorry the gambling front didn’t work out, but I’m glad you had fun and that run in HL. Always love gambling at that level and in the ambiance of High Limit.

Thanks for a great trip report. Like you, my wife and I consider our gambling budget as an entertainment expense. If we leave with anything it's a win. As a result we've never had a losing trip.

Great pictures and love the report. I had almost the exact same blackjack run at V/P recently also! There’s either $50 or lately $100 tables ( three) on the floor at the Venetian that are 3/2, one double deck and I think 2 are shoes. They are on the other side of the walkway from all those crappy 6/5 tables, close to the high limit room. I hadn’t gone into the high limit room before because I had thought the limits would be much higher than $100 but they weren’t, at least during the day. Like you said, what a rush! When that shoe starts hitting I like to keep raising my bets and see where it goes just like you did!!

My wife and I are mostly green chip players. Our first trip into the HL room mirrors yours and yes it is an amazing rush. We went in with $300.00 just to take a chance and also to say we did it. In a matter of two shoes we are up over 8k and are are making $500.00 bets. More than once we put out black chips for the dealers bet. It was absolutely amazing. We left right at 8k ahead and the pit boss said we tipped over $1800.00 to the dealer. It is easy to get spoiled playing like that but I can't afford it. Thanks for the report and it looks like you had a good trip.

Thanks for the great report. Sounds like you guys had a great time. And in my opinion, the type of gambling that you did, and playing in the High Limit room, losing $1500.00 for the whole trip is not too bad really. People lose more than that on the penny slots. :cuss:
